Stunned silence. Awkward silence. Shocked silence.

Describe it how you want, the bar right now was silent.

After Drake’s outburst when he punched Nate directly in the face, no one had said anything. No one had even moved from the spot they were standing.

You see this bar was our local, so a lot of people knew Nate, they knew Drake and they knew me. Especially since Drake and Nate worked here, everyone knew everyone. So basically, half of the people we know now knew our business.

So much for hiding mine and Drake’s little mishaps from everyone we know.

We were more fucking public than a Kardashian.

The worst thing was the scrutinising eyes looking at me. All of the guys were standing there with their jaws touching the floor; Lacey was looking at me with a confused expression I think waiting for me to deny what Drake had just said.

Of course, I couldn’t.

I do wish the truth would have come out in a less ‘Jerry Springer’ situation, but we don’t all get what we wish for unfortunately.

Nate was still on the floor, wiping the blood coming out of his nose with the back of his hand. His furious eyes were still planted on Drake.

Sean was the first one to break the silence.

He leaned his head towards Luke, his eyes still looking between me and Drake.

“Is there any chance Nate has another sister we don’t know about?” Sean whispers to Luke, who shakes his head slowly, judging by the look on his face I'm guessing that thought had already popped into his mind. Sean presses his lips together and nods “I didn’t think so.”

I sigh “Nate listen-“

“Don’t Mia.” He cuts me off, his angry eyes on me now making the words get stuck in my throat “You’ve done enough.”

My eyes went to the floor in guilt. His words actually hurt because I knew he was right. It was because of me Nate and Drake were fighting like this.

“Look Nate don’t be like that with her it wasn’t her fault.” Drake suddenly jumps to my defence.

Nate burst out laughing without a single trace of humour. He suddenly gets to his feet, wiping a little more blood from under his nose “Rushing to her defence now. So what is this then, a secret little relationship you’ve both got going?”

I shake my head, but it’s Drake who replies “No it’s not like that.”

“So what is it like then Drake? It was just a fuck?” Nate almost seethes “Is that what you used my sister for? Another girl to add to the endless list of Drake O’Connell’s humps and dumps?”

That one hurt, mostly because as Nate said this I suddenly realised he may have a point. Drake and I had sex, we never mentioned anything about a relationship and even before Nate found out we were going to go home to have sex. That was all this was. I didn’t care because I didn’t want a relationship, but hearing it out loud that I was actually one of the girls that Drake has, as he fondly puts it, smashed and dashed kinda sucked.

“You know I wouldn’t do that to her Nate.” Drake responds without a hesitation.

“I don’t know what you would or wouldn’t do anymore Drake!” Nate almost explodes, and Drake clenches his jaw as Nate is clearly hitting the right buttons and making a point “I never thought I would have to worry about you fucking my sister behind my back, and look how that turned out.”

“Look I admit I messed up, but you’re acting a little high and mighty right now aren’t you mate?” Drake says, looking at him with anger of his own. Drake suddenly points at Lacey “That’s your little sister’s best friend and you’ve been banging her for how long now?”

No one saw the punch coming. Nate’s fist once again collided with Drake’s face at the speed of light, this time he put a little more force in the hit because Drake went flying backwards, knocking over a bar stool as he hit the floor.

“I never for one fucking second lied to anyone about that!” Nate screamed at Drake, standing over him.

Drake was breathing heavily as I saw more blood on his face now. Drake didn’t react this time; instead he wiped the blood away from his face with the back of his hand, not quite being able to look Nate in the eye.

“I was honest; from day fucking one I went up to Mia and told her.” Suddenly Nate walks over to me “Actually no, if I remember correctly I asked you if it was okay. I didn’t even lay one finger on Lacey before I went up to you and made sure you were okay with it because I didn’t want to risk upsetting you or making you feel uncomfortable.” Nate clenches his jaw as he makes eye contact with me “Nice to know you had the same courtesy with me Sis.”

I opened my mouth to reply, finding it hard to actually find my voice as I looked into Nate’s eyes. How hurt he was.

“I’m sorry.” I managed to choke out, realising he had a point. Even before Nate had kissed Lacey he asked me if I minded. I of course said no, and that’s why they carried on hooking up. He came up to me before, which is something I was too much of a bitch to do.

“I didn’t know that.” Drake’s faint voice suddenly breaks the silence, and we both look over to him still on the floor.

“Well now you do, so do not even try and make what you did better by throwing that in my face. I was honest. You both lied.” Nate snarls at both of us, before suddenly he stops and looks like he’s thinking something over “Was this going on last week?”

“What?” I ask not knowing what he means.

“Last week when you both went missing and I was going ape shit trying to find you. Was there something going on between you two then?” Nate asks, staring between me and Drake waiting for an answer.

Both of us avoided eye contact with him, which apparently was all the answer he needed.

Nate breathes a laugh “So when I said that to you on the phone, asking if there was anything going on between you two, you lied to me then as well?” Nate asks me, cocking his head.

I nod my head faintly.

“You made me feel like a fucking scumbag for even thinking that of my best friend and little sister, and in fact you two were going behind my back then as well?” Nate asks again rhetorically because we all knew the answer.

“Look we didn’t actually have sex last week. We just made out a little it didn’t seem like that big of a deal, we were drunk.” Drake suddenly gets to his feet and tries to explain.

“If it was no big deal why didn’t you tell me?” Nate demands.

“Because we knew you’d react like this!” Drake replies, pointing his hand at Nate to gesture what he is acting like now.

“I’m reacting like this not because you two hooked up, but because you’ve been lying to my face for fucking weeks now you asshole!” Nate explodes at him, and both mine and Drake’s faces are stunned at his words. “If you had come up to me like a man, like a fucking best friend of over 10 years should have, and asked if it was okay to start something up with her I would not be reacting like  this. I’ll be honest I would have found it weird at first, but if you were happy I would have got over it. To be fair a part of me would have been fucking thrilled to know my sister was ending up with a guy I actually liked and knew for a fact I could trust.”

Drake’s face is emotionless as he takes in Nate’s words. The only time any type of reaction flashed in his eyes was when Nate said the last sentence. The clear guilt in his face was unmistakable.

“So much for the trust shit now though huh?” Nate breathes a bitter laugh.

I couldn’t believe what Nate had just said. All these years he was the over protective big brother, the guy who would threaten to run guys down if they came anywhere near me. Now hearing him say this made me realise he was not as unreasonable as I thought. He just wanted us to be honest with him.

“Nate I didn’t know that, if we did we wouldn’t have…” I find myself saying, unable to find my voice after seeing the scene that has just taken place in front of me.

Nate looks at me “That’s how highly you think of me then?”

I shake my head “No of course not.”

“Then why did you lie to me then?” Nate retorts, looking between Drake and I. He points at the both of us “Out of everyone, I never expected you two to lie to me. Especially not you two.”

The silence is back in the room as no one knows what to say. It was only when I heard someone cough that I remembered we were still in the crowded bar, that everyone was still staring over like it was a free show. I had noticed our friends had been silent all the way through this, letting us three get it all out.

“Was it just once?” Nate suddenly asks.

I close my eyes and mentally take a deep breath as I knew this answer wasn’t going to go down well. The silence was Nate’s answer once again.

“How long?” Nate asks.

“Nate it doesn’t matter-“

“I just want to get the fact right, I want to know how long you two have been bullshitting me for. Humour me.” Nate cuts me off, smiling bitterly in my direction “How long?”

I sigh “Since the Cabin. Last night on the tape was the first time we…” I wondered off, not needing to say the rest as everyone knew perfectly well what I meant.

“You two have been getting dirty since my Cabin?” Luke suddenly exclaims in surprise, and Drake glares at him telling him to shut up. Luke holds his hands up apologetically before pretending to lock his lips and quieten down.

“Hold on, if last night was the first time you two did it then how is it not the only time…” Sean suddenly asks puzzled, then he drifts off as it clicks “…Oh.”

“This morning. He was upstairs.” Nate says out loud for anyone who didn’t figure it out “That explains why your personal hygiene took such a downfall this morning.”

I nodded my head, confirming he was right.

No one said anything for a while again, and surprisingly this time is was a randomer in the crowd who broke the silence.

“So what are you going to do now?” the man, who has clearly had one too many tequilas this evening, slurred at us.

Drake and I look at each other, then at Nate as we both looked like we had no answer to this question.

“I tell you what we’re going to do now.” Nate speaks, apparently he did know. He turns to Drake, his expression stone cold “I want you to get your shit out of my house, I want you to delete my number and I want you to stay the fuck away from me.”

My mouth, along with every single one of our friends, fell open at Nate’s statement.

“Nate come on man…” Drake drifts off, his voice stunned at what Nate has just said.

This was Nate and Drake. They had been best friends since they were both still watching power rangers and sleeping with a night light. They were inseparable, they were basically brothers. I knew for a fact Drake thought of Nate more as his family than his actual family.

Hearing Nate say this may be worse to him that the punches he received earlier.

“I’ll pack your shit up and put it on the drive way. I don’t want you in my house, and if I do find you anywhere near it I will call the police myself and tell them you broke in. That should go down really well with your probation officer.” Nate’s voice was so cold it sent chills down my spine. His threat was so spiteful I debated whether or not I heard him right.

Drake stood there unblinking as he too was stunned by what was coming out of Nate’s mouth “Nate, look I am sorry. I really am but come on, it’s me and you. We’ll sort it out.” Drake tries to reason, his voice a little horse as he swallows and says the next bit “I mean come one, we’re like brothers man.”

“That was until you lied to my face, multiple times and did the one thing I never expected from you of all people. You were like my brother, which is why I trusted you with her. Why I never thought I would have to worry about leaving you both alone in a room because I thought you of all people would not do that behind my back. How fucking wrong I was.” Nate explains in a monotone voice “I wouldn’t have given a shit if you had come up to me like a man and asked, it’s the fact you lied. You took the trust I had Drake and shit on it. So I’m done.”

“You’re going to throw a 12 year friendship down the drain because of this?” Drake asks.

Nate shakes his head “No, you threw our 12 year friendship down the drain because of this. I know it’s in your nature to fuck people over Drake, but sooner or later it was going to catch up with you. You can’t keep screwing people over and lying and expect to come off scot free every time just because you're Drake O’Connell. We’re not at school anymore mate.”

Drake clenched his jaw, the words hitting close to home. He ran a hand through his hair, and I could tell he was desperate now. What he said next proved this.

“You’re the only family I got man.” Drake voice is almost pleading, and a part of me breaks as I hear the desperation in his tone.

Nate stares back at him, his face un readable “Not anymore.”

With that he turns his back to Drake and begins to walk out of the bar. As he goes to walk past us, he is suddenly stopped by Lacey placing a hand on his arm. They exchange eye contact for a minute, before she suddenly turns to face me.

“I can understand you lying to him, but why me?” Lacey asks me.

I expected this, but I don’t know if I had the energy for it after the Nate confrontation.

“I don’t know Lacey, I should have told you. I’m sorry.” I explain, realising there was no point in explaining because when you were like Pinocchio before he gets a nose the size of an elephants hard on, you are clearly in the wrong.

She rolls her tongue over her top teeth, nodding her head slowly “I asked you before we walked in here tonight if we were okay. That was a chance to air it all out. Hell the many times I made comments about you and Drake in the last 2 weeks should have been a chance to air it all out.”

I ran a hand through my hair “I know, I fucked up.”

She shook her head at me “I’m meant to be your best friend. It’s nice to know you can trust me with your deepest darkest secrets.” And with that, she turns her head to Nate “Can you give me a lift home?”

He nods and gestures his head towards the door, not even looking back at either of us. Lacey however does make eye contact before she leaves, and I can see how hurt she is. I lied to her as well. I lied to everyone.

Suddenly I see someone from the crowd walk towards us, and as I look at who it is I sigh in annoyance realising guilt trip and confrontation number three of the night was coming.

“So the reason we didn’t work out was shitty timing right?” Garry asks sarcastically.

“We weren’t getting together then you little prick.” Drake answers the question for me, clearly all patience and calm he had in him was long gone considering he had just lost the best friend he’s had since he was 6. The only person he considered family at all.

“You expect me to believe that? You’ve both lied pretty much about everything and you think I’m going to believe you now?” Garry asks me even though it was Drake who had answered him before. Clearly he was not interested in Drake right now, he wanted my explanation.

Unfortunately, Drake was insistent on answering all of Garry’s questions.

“I couldn’t give a shit what you believed right now horse fucker, you’re my last concern.”

“I wasn’t asking you was I?” Garry turns and snarls at Drake, who doesn’t hesitate in going closer to Garry. Jimmy is quickly in between them, placing his hands on Drake’s chest and pushing him back.

“That’s enough blood spilt for one night don’t you think?” Jimmy asks him, trying to calm him down.

Drake’s glare is still on Garry, but he hesitantly listens to Jimmy and backs down.

“Why are you stopping him for?” Garry asks Jimmy “It’s not like he’s got anything else to lose tonight is it.”

Drake flies forward so fast Jimmy didn’t have a chance of stopping him. He grabs Garry’s collar and head-butts him square in the nose, sending Garry falling backwards onto the floor nursing the third bleeding nose of the night.

Drake goes for him again, clearly all rational thinking gone out of his mind right now and it took Luke, Jimmy and Sean to hold him back from breaking every bone in Garry’s body. The look of fury in his eyes actually made me stop breathing. It didn’t even look like Drake. He was like a man possessed.

He was struggling trying to break free of the guys, his breath was hard and he was shouting threats at Garry as he lay on the ground wiping the blood from his face.

I was in shock watching the animal in front of me. In all the years I have known Drake, I have never, and I mean ever seen him lose it like this.

It was only when his eyes connected with mine did he begin to stop struggling. He must have saw the shocked look on my face, because as he looked over he stopped the screaming, he stopped the struggling and he just looked at me, his expression unreadable.

I don’t know how long we were making eye contact for before he suddenly pulled out of Luke, Jimmy and Sean’s grip. They guys were hesitant to let go at first, but they eventually did. Drake stepped back, his eyes still locked to mine as I saw the shameful look on his face, almost like he was embarrassed to have me see him explode like that.

His eyes then looked around the room to find every single person in the bar looking at him after his outburst, and I saw the guard go up. I saw him tense up and the shameful look from before disappeared behind an angry mask.

“Enjoyed the show?” Drake yelled over to the crowd. No one said anything. A few people actually stepped back a little. Drake noticed the looks people were giving him. They were scared of him. He shook his head “Fuck this.”

He turned his back and walked out of the bar.

See, I knew Drake well. When he got worked up like that he would come round to my house. When he would need to calm down he would have a few beers with my brother and he would be sorted because Nate had talked to him, persuaded him not to do something that would get him sent back inside.

But that wasn’t an option anymore.

So the only thought going through my mind as I saw Drake storm out of the bar was, where was he going to go now?
