Chapter Two

Mrs Carter returned the smile that Louis had given her before and turned to Jonathan. "Jonathan, you can go back into the classroom now. You're lucky I don't send you to the principal's office," she added, just as Jonathan was about to say something.

Instead, he nodded and walked back into the classroom, giving one more glare to Louis, muttering under his breath before closing the door behind him. Louis turned to face Mrs Carter again and saw that she was still looking after Jonathan.

"Louis." Mrs Carter suddenly shifted her attention back to Louis. "Are you sure about the play?"

"I can't get up on that stage," Louis muttered, his gaze falling to his feet, and Mrs Carter rested her hand on his shoulder.

"As your teacher, I'm a little disappointed. You have a lot of talent. But, as a friend of your mothers, I understand."

Louis' heart began feeling heavy at Mrs Carter's words, but he shook away the feeling. It had been a long time since he had seen Mrs Carter as a friend of the family, and a long time since he heard her speak about his mother.

With a quick squeeze of his shoulder, Mrs Carter dropped her hand back to her side and cleared her throat.

"You can't keep causing trouble."

"I didn't start that," Louis defended himself, thankful the conversation had shifted. "I never do."

"I know, but we always know how it's going to end." She paused and gave Louis another small smile. "Are you committed to this monologue? I need a positive answer. It'll only be for me and no one else; if that was something that would put you off."

Louis nodded. "That sounds good, thanks."

"Okay... I'm going to do something," Mrs Carter said hesitantly. "I know I shouldn't, but I trust you, Louis. You're probably the best student, grade-wise, in the school. Plus, I promised your mother I wouldn't let you get into too much trouble when you came here."

Louis nodded again without a word, looking a touch confused.

"Though, that was a long time ago now," Mrs Carter said quietly, and Louis pulled his gaze up from the ground to look at her.

"You're doing a swell job," Louis said, trying to stay upbeat, and Mrs Carter grinned again.

"Look, you don't need to come to drama class anymore. If you're not going to be in the play, I see no point in it. And, at this stage, I think it's best if you're not in the same room as Jonathan, especially when he's trying to act."

"Trying is the keyword," Louis interjected.

"Louis, for God's sake." Mrs Carter shook her head. "Back on to the subject of the monologue," she said, "I need you to check in with me every day, so I know that you're doing it. Every day, Louis," Mrs Carter emphasised. "If you don't do that... I will fail you."

Louis nodded a third time, making a mental note to write a physical note to remind himself.

"I will. I promise." Louis gave a small smile to Mrs Carter, who nodded in response.

"You can go. I'll write you a pass tomorrow. Valid for the rest of the year, so you won't get in trouble for not being in my class."

"Sounds like a solid plan, ma'am." Louis smiled.

"Don't push it."

Mrs Carter turned on her heel and moved towards the classroom, pausing as she reached the door. Thinking that she was going to say something, Louis waited. But, after a moment, she continued into the room, closing the door behind her.

Louis stood alone in the hall, staring at the door his teacher had just walked through, a smile still sitting on his lips. After a minute of bathing in his victory, Louis turned and made his way down the empty hall, glad that everyone else was still in their classes.

Taking a sharp left, Louis was soon walking into the boy's bathroom. It was empty; thankfully. Louis strolled up to one of the three sinks hanging from the wall and opened the tap, observing himself in the large mirror before him. Strands of his long, light brown hair fell in front of his face, resting just above his lips. His grey eyes sparkled slightly in the bathroom's light as he looked down at his clothes. They were nothing fancy, as Jonathan had inadvertently pointed out; tight-ish black jeans that complimented his figure, a plain white t-shirt with a blue hooded jumper over the top. Finishing off his "poor-person" outfit was his pair of black and white canvas shoes.

Louis looked back at his face in the mirror, gently moving his finger to his eye to readjust his contact lens before splashing some water on his face just as the bathroom door opened.

"And then I'm gonna drop it like it's hot!" A voice floated to Louis' ears as he shut the water off and turned towards the voice. "Oh, hey, Louis."

Louis' eyes scanned the boy who had just walked in. His spiked blonde hair stood perfectly, and his piercing blue eyes seemed to take in everything at once. To Louis, he gave off a very childlike vibe. He had one earbud in and was bobbing his head to, what Louis assumed was, a song about dropping something like it's hot.

"Samuel," Louis responded with a smile, still taking in the sight of his best friend.

Although their relationship was nothing but platonic, Louis couldn't deny that Sam was attractive. Especially in the tight jeans and long-sleeve shirt he was currently wearing.

"What ya' doin' in the bathroom?" Sam questioned, making his way into one of the toilet cubicles.

"Did you not notice the streamers?" Louis retorted, moving his attention back to the mirror, squinting. He hated wearing contact lenses. "Obviously, there's a party happening in here."

"Of course! How could I have missed them!" Sam exclaimed, flushing the toilet, and walking to the sink next to Louis.

"Wash your hands."

"Yes, Mum," Sam said jokingly but did as Louis told him. "So, why are you in the bathroom?"

"Sam, quick question."

"Yeah?"

"What do people usually go to the bathroom at school to do?"

"Have sex? Do drugs? Dunk someone's head in the toilet?" Sam shut the water off and turned to smile at Louis.

"What about someone like me?" Louis glared at Sam, though he couldn't help smiling.

"Do you mean a nerd?" Sam teased. "I don't know... homework? Dunking their own head in the toilet?"

"Ha-ha, hilarious, Samuel. You should do standup comedy. Although, you'd have to be that thing..."

"Be what thing?"

"You know, that thing. What is it?" Louis stroked his chin, pretending to think. "Oh, yeah. Likeable. And funny."

"First off, mean. Secondly, stop avoiding my question."

Louis let out a sigh, not sure what Sam's obsession with him being in the bathroom was, but he could feel him continually staring, so he decided to turn and face his best friend.

"Just washing my face, aye. Nothing spectacular."

"Aren't you supposed to be in... theatre?"

Sam threw his head back on the last word and placed the back of his hand against his forehead. Though, through the display of dramatics, Louis saw the reason why Sam kept pressing for an answer. He was concerned.

"And I thought I was the gay one." Louis laughed, trying to indicate to Sam that there was nothing wrong; which seemed to have worked.

"I could be gay."

"You're not gay, Sam."

"I could be."

"Alright, then, let me know, and I'll give you a taste of the 'Louis Sex Train'." Louis winked at Sam and inched his body closer; though Sam did not move.

"Yeah... gross. I don't even want to imagine your weird, naked body." Sam laughed, pushing Louis gently. "And besides, you don't even have a 'Sex Train'. You've barely touched another human being."

"You know what, Sam? That hurt."

"It was a light push, you baby."

"I meant the words, you dumbass." Louis shook his head and moved towards the bathroom door. "And, if you must know, I was in drama, but I got kicked out. Well, I didn't actually get kicked out. It's a weird situation."

Louis had decided to fill Sam in now, instead of waiting until the end of school. After stealing a glance at Sam's confused face, Louis exited the bathroom and walked into the hall. Sam followed.

"That... didn't make sense."

Louis leaned up against the wall in the hallway, and Sam stood in front of him, watching intently. "Stop looking at me like a predator."

"Would you rather it be sexual?"

"I'd rather you had a bag over your head, actually." Louis grinned. "You know, Kara isn't this nosey."

"I'm still the better best friend, though."

"Whatever you say."

"Have you talked to Kara today?" Sam suddenly asked, forgetting about the subject at hand and looking more eager than ever.

"Sam, please don't." Louis sighed.

"Don't what? I'm just curious."

"Don't gush over her, like you always do. It's embarrassing."

"Gush? I don't gush! I-I haven't even met her!" Although Sam tried to hide it, Louis could see his cheeks flush red.

"I know you haven't met her, which makes it even worse! But, oh, my God, you do so gush!" Louis teased, standing up straighter, before diving into his best imitation of Sam's voice. "'She has such pretty hair... and her eyes... my God, are they beautiful. And that smile.'"

"Shut up!" Sam shoved Louis lightly as his face turned an even brighter red.

"She's my best friend, Sam; you can't have her. Also, you look like a deformed tomato, with the whole blushing thing." Louis laughed.

"Okay, you seem way more insulty than usually," Sam muttered, still doing his best to hide his flushed face. "You dished someone out, didn't you?"

"Ah, you know me so well." Louis managed to contain his laughter, though he still held a smile. "Jonathan."

"Again? That's like the fifth time this month. And the month has just started."

"I know, I know. But, as usual, he started it." Louis chuckled.

"Homophobic, derogatory, or just good old fashion bullying?"

"All three, actually."

"He's so predictable." Sam smiled before suddenly becoming serious. "You know, if he, or any of his goons, ever try to physically hurt you, I'm gonna knock them on their asses."

"I'm bigger than you, Sam. I think I can handle myself. Thanks, though. Plus, it wouldn't be the first time."

"Doesn't matter." Sam shook his head. "From now on, I'll kick some ass for you."

"What if you're not around?" Louis questioned.

"I'll have to beat them twice as hard next time I see them."

"Beat them? Maybe you are gay." Louis tried to lighten the serious mood Sam had created.

"Screw you." Sam punched Louis' shoulder, and they laughed. "So, that's why you got kicked out?" Sam asked, leisurely starting to make his way down the hallway back to his class.

Pushing off the wall, Louis followed him.

"Pretty much," Louis responded. "That, and the fact that I'm not even in the play we're doing. So, Mrs Carter didn't see the point of me being there in the first place."

"I don't understand why you don't want to be in the play," Sam said, sliding his hand along the wall. "I mean, isn't that the whole point of doing theatre? To act and stuff?"

"I was in a play the night..." Louis started but quickly stopped waving his hand dismissively. "I have my reasons. Now, stop being nosey and get back to class."

Louis shoved Sam's shoulder, making him trip over his feet, trying his best to avoid that discussion, which he seemed to have succeeded in.

"But it's math!" Sam whined, regaining his footing and slouching his back. "I don't wanna."

"You've got like..." Louis let his words hang in the air as he pulled his phone out and looked at the time. "Half-an-hour left, and then the day is over. Suck it up." Louis laughed before he stopped walking.

"Ugh, fine. Wait, what are you doing?" Sam noticed Louis had stopped walking and followed suit.

"Standing?"

"Hilarious. Why'd you stop?"

"I'm going to the library. Is that okay, Mum?" Louis made his voice as childlike as possible as he asked the question, causing Sam to wrinkle his nose.

"I forgot you don't have to go back to class, nerd. And, of course, you're going to the library. Whatever. I'll talk to you later then." Sam waved and turned back around, continuing on his way down the hall.

"Okay, I'll text you when I get there, so you know I'm safe. Bye, Mum!" Louis called after him, still imitating a child's voice, causing him to get the finger from Sam just as he went out of sight at the end of the hall.

"We have fun," Louis muttered to himself under his breath before turning on his heel and heading back in the opposite direction, towards the library.
