March 1979

Once upon a time, in a little town in Michigan called Riverside, There was a little forest. The forest was in the way back of the town and had a lot of woodland creatures like squirrels and birds and others. Anyway, in this forest, No human ever went there except for work. Well, except for Paul, A kid who had built a habitat for his Galapagos tortoises which his parents wouldn't let him keep. Anyway, right now there were two girls in this forest together at the moment. One of them, who was 17, had long light blonde hair, and blue eyes. The other girl who was 14, had long, curly dark hair and deep purple eyes. The first girl, Lisa had lived here for a few months. Recently she had escaped this frightful girl's academy and she was hiding in the forest so no one would find her. The other girl, whose name was Veronica, often visited this forest so she could get her mind off things. She had also been visiting this place for a few months. She had good reason to, as she had a domineering father who was never around. (Because he was drinking) And never listened to her about anything and a very obnoxious, annoying big brother. These 2 girls were in the middle of a conversation. "So, Veronica, Mind if you tell me what it's like where you live? I've never visited the town for anything. Not even for food because you always bring me leftovers from home." Lisa said as she was munching on potato chips Veronica had brought along with her.

"First off, it's a wise move for you not to go into town. If I ever were to tell them you ran away, they'd rat you out faster than you can say Jack Robinson."

Lisa replied. "But Ronny! You could lie, say I'm an orphan." Veronica replied to this. "Lisa, you know how terrible I am at lying. Secondly, Riverside's quite boring. Nothing cool ever happens around here and everyone at my school hates my guts because I'm like ugly as heck!"

Lisa replied, in a reassuring tone. "Oh, come on Veronica. Don't listen to those jerks. I think you're very cute."

Veronica replied. "Cute? I'm guessing ugly in a cute way. My skin has lots of acne, my teeth need fixing, I have a gigantic nose, my hair is very mousy because we barely have any money for shampoo, and look at my torn overalls! Do I look like Farrah Fawcett? No, because I'm like, the ugliest person in town. Even my interests need fixing!"

Lisa replied "No, You're not. Besides, there must be uglier people."

Veronica tilted her head. "Like the elephant man?"

Lisa replied "Yep. The elephant man is uglier than you. Look at me! My clothes are all dirty! I have not taken a shower in months!"

Veronica replied. "That's easy for you to say, you haven't even been to my school! It sucks there! The girls are ruthless! I usually sit at the loser table with all the nerds! I'm pretty sure it's because I'm a tomboy and I like Star Trek. They don't do nerdy at my school. Either you look like Shelley Hack or you're out."

Lisa replied, in a pitiful tone. "Oh, I feel so sorry for you. But the boys in your school like Star Wars, right? You might like that film. It's science fiction."

Veronica snarked "Oh, Star Wars? That lame flick? Boy, I cannot wait till that fad ends. And the boys tell me to go hang out with the girls, but as I said before, they hate me!"

"By the way, do you have a crush on anybody?"

Lisa shrugged. "Nope, not at the moment."

"But you're 17! You should have a crush on somebody!" Veronica said as they got up and started walking to the local diner.

"Well, I'm still figuring myself out!" Lisa sighed.

They eventually arrived at the Big Burger Diner, home of the big burger. The waiter there, a boy just Lisa's age who was rather attractive asked "Welcome to Big burger. Home of the big burger. How may we help you?" In a bored, resigned voice.

He did not want to be here either, as he was doomed to the fate of working at a shitty fast food restaurant. Veronica did not want to end up working here. She muttered to herself. "God, it's either this or being president of the PTA."

Becoming president of the PTA was also one of Veronica's fears for the future. She dreaded being a wife to a man like her father, she wasn't Tammy Wynette. She didn't want to stand by a drunk, alcoholic man. She wanted to do things, like see the world, or become a movie star. But then again, she had no goals for herself. She didn't know what to do with her life. She thought to herself that maybe, just maybe she should give up, like the Big Burger waiter. Veronica said "I'd like to order a burger and fries. Lisa, what do you want?"

Lisa replied, "I'll have the salad."

They started eating for a while as the restaurant played radio hits that Veronica had heard like, several times. Veronica, crossing her fingers, said. "Oh to hear a song by The Police. Is that too much to ask?"

Lisa replied "The police have a band?!"

Oh no, Lisa. They're a cool band from the UK."

"Home of stuffy people and the Queen?"

"Oh, come on, Lisa. You need to stop living under a rock! But what can I say, I only discovered them like, a week ago."

Veronica said with a giggle. She then explained, "The police are this cool rock band who play new wave music."

Lisa, tilting her head asked. "New wave? What's that?"

Veronica replied, awkwardly. "Y'know. Stuff like The Cars."

"Oh."

Veronica asked. "By the way, Why didn't you ask the waiter out? He looked kind of cute. I think he would have made a good boyfriend for you. You have waited too long for a lover to come around."

"I just told you earlier! I'm still figuring myself out!" Lisa replied.

"Wow, how pretentious." Veronica thought to herself.

The 2 girls chatted away as Cher's song "Take me Home" played in the background.
