CHAPTER 49

THANKSGIVING DAY

AMBER P.O.V. -

“Damn hurry up. The food gon be cold.” August called to me from the hotel bedroom.  I was in the bathroom taking a shower, but the door was open so I could hear him.

“Don’t rush me!” I yelled to him.

He had some nerve. He came over to the hotel to pick me up. I hadn’t seen him for a few days, of course missing him and him missing me, things got a little heated and well…yeah I’m trying to wash him off of me. But nowhe wants to rush me? Just a few minutes ago, he had all the time in the world.

I took my precious time on purpose, finished up showering, wrapped myself in a towel and looked at my face in the mirror.

I looked like I was in a horror film. My make-up was totally messed up. My lipstick smeared. Mascara running. I took my precious time again, washing my face. I finished and came into the room to change into my clothes.

Aug was laid back on the bed, fully dressed, scrolling through his phone. “We got niggas at the house waiting on us. This shit is rude.”

I put on my clothes, then sat in the chair in front of the vanity mirror, ignoring him and putting on my make-up.

“Amb.” He looked over at me annoyed.

“What?” I looked at him through the mirror.

“Did you not just hear what I said?”

“I was ready when you came.” I said putting on my foundation.

He let out an audible sigh.

I mocked him.

“Don’t fuck with me, I’m not in the mood.”

“You can go. I can drive.” I said putting on my eye-shadow. “You insisted on coming and getting me anyway. On top of that, you insisted on fucking me so…”

He mumbled something to himself, while starring at his phone.

“I didn’t hear you.” I said putting on my eyeliner.

“I said I didn’t make you hop on my dick.”

“I know why you’re mad August. And you should let it go. I told you when I’m finished with this stuff, I’d be back home.”

“It’s a fucking holiday. You can spend the entire weekend with me.”

After we had got done making love, he begged me to come back home. I said no, so he’s been in a sour mood since then. It had nothing to do with us being late.

“I could. But I’m not. Because I have unnecessary work to do.” I said putting on my lipstick. He gave me a salty ass look. I could tell he was hurt.

I turned around. “Baby it’s hard for me too. But I got to focus.”

“You can’t do it at the house?”

Noooooooo. It’s too many distractions. You. Sata. Travis and his never-ending appetite. I need quiet and I don’t get that home.”

“I’ll make sho’ Sata quiet baby, just please come home damn. I’m missing you like crazy. I can’t do this shit.”

“August, let’s go.” I said putting the final touches on my make-up and grabbing my purse.

He got up off the bed, pulling up his pants.

“You got everything?” I asked making sure I got my hotel key.

“Can you pack an overnight bag, just in case?”

“If I do stay at home, I got clothes at home. We’ll see. If I do stay, it’s not going to be the whole weekend tho.”

“Aight.” He grabbed me by my waist.

“This between us. I don’t want Ma to know.”

“Ok.”

He bent down and repeatedly pecked my lips not wanting to let me go. He was so got-damn spoiled. Jesus!

“Aug let’s go.” I broke the kiss and opened the door.

He followed behind me and we were on our way.

AUGUST P.O.V.  –

“Pop-Pop.” Sata was in her walker and was patting on my leg.

“Uncle Boobie when you gon be on tv?” Kay asked Travis. “I be looking at my tv everyday, but I don’t see you.”

“Real soon young buck. Real soon. Sata been helping me with my auditions.”

“She a baby!” Noonie said real loud.

“I know, but she my acting coach. Watch this.”

“Booty-doo.” Travis called to Sata.

She scooted over to him in her walker.

“I need you to tell me, which way sound better.”

Sata yelled something to Travis.

“You ready?”

She raised both her hands.

“Aight.” Travis made a serious face, then busted out into the Miss Sofia from The Color Purple. Sata actually looked at him like she was paying attention.

“All my life I had to fight. I had to fight my daddy. I had to fight my brothers. I had to fight my cousins and my uncles. A girl child ain't safe in a family of men. But I never thought I'd have to fight in my own house. She let out her breath. I loves Harpo, she say. God knows I do. But I'll kill him dead before I let him beat me.”

Sata clapped at the end.

“What I tell y’all? She know a Denzel when she see one.” He high-fived her. “She gon be walking the red carpet with me.”

“Travis leave that baby alone.” My mama laughed.

Stac, Cha and Amb came in with the desserts Stacy had made in her apartment.

The girls popped up.

“Oooo cake!” Noonie danced.

“You always dancing Noonie.” I rubbed her head.

“Step back” Cha told them as she put the cake on the kitchen table. “Did y’all eat first?”

They all shook their heads yes.

There was a knock at the door. I went to get it.

“Dom my nigga. What’s up man?” I gave Dominic the bruh hug. “Y’all this Dom. He’s our landlords son.”

“What up family?” Dominic waved.

Amb looked at me. I tried to ignore her.

“You eat man? We got plenty food.”

“Bruh, I’m starving. Thanks for inviting me.”

“No problem. Help yourself.”

Dominic went to get some food.

“You got pretty eyes.” Chay said to Dominic.

He laughed. “Thank you.”

“What are they?” She was all up in his phase.

“Chay get outta that man’s face.” Cha told her.

“It’s cool.” He laughed. “They’re hazel.”

“Oooo Hazel. I want a boyfriend with Hazel eyes. You got a girlfriend?”

“Chay.” Cha snatched her up and pulled her to the side.

Amb came over to me. “What was that about?”

“What is what?” I played dumb eating some cake, then feeding small bits to Sata.

“You were just ready to whoop his ass. Now y’all cool?”

“He a good dude. I misjudged him.”

She narrowed her eyes at me.

“What?”

“Don’t lie to me August.”

“I’m not lying.”

“We gon talk about this later.” She warned me and went over to talk to my mother.

“Cha we got to see the new house.” Stacy told Cha.

“Yeah it’s beautiful. I’m so grateful for Amb and Aug doing this for us.”

“I got my own room Auntie Stac.” Noonie said excited.

“Amb you like Oprah handing out houses instead of cars?” Travis asked her eating from his mountain high plate. “If so, slide one my way.”

“You don’t deserve a house man.” I told Travis.

“What do you mean I don’t deserve a house?”

“What have you done to deserve a house? You not working. You not in school.”

“Nigga you ain’t in school either! What you mean?”

Everybody looked at me.

“What he talking bout you not in school?” My mama asked me.

“Trav just talking.” I waved him off and tried to laugh.

“That better be a joke. Trav that’s a joke right?”

Trav looked at me then my mama.

“Naw Mama, Aug got expelled.” He held his head down.

“Nigga!” I looked at Travis.

“I can’t lie to mama.” He shrugged.

“Expelled?” She stood up. “What hell you do to get expelled?” She walked over to me.

“Oooooo grandma said hell.” Noonie danced around. Cha hit her to be quiet.

“Thank y’all for the food, but I’m gon bounce.” Dominic got his plate and left.

“It wasn’t my fault mama.”

“They ain’t just expelling people for no reason.” She poked me in my head with her index finger. “You up here playing?”

“Nah mama.” I lowered my head.

“Mama Shelia it’s not his fault. The dentist he worked for lied on him. I’m working on the case to get him back in.” Amber defended me.

“Lied on him about what?” She said still looking at me.

“Saying he helped her administer laughing gas, but all he did was help her.”

She sat down and put her head in her hands and kept shaking it.

Stacy hit Travis upside his head. “See what you did nigga.”

“When was y’all gon tell me this?” She looked at Me and Amb.

“After we got it fixed. Didn’t want you worrying.” I said.

“Amb I expected you to be more responsible. We all know August isn’t.”

“What I--?” Amb tried to speak.

“What good is having a lawyer if you can’t use them? Travis take me back to my hotel right now.

“Ma it ain’t Amb fault.” I tried to defend Amb.

“Like hell it is. Call yourself his girlfriend and don’t bit more care about my son than nothing. What kinda girlfriend sits by and lets this happen.” She got up. “Travis!”

“Yeah, mama. I’m ready.” He got up.

“August I’m ashamed of you.” She left out.

Travis followed behind her.

“She’s just upset Amb. I know you if ain’t nobody down for Aug, you are.” Cha tried to comfort Amb. “I believe y’all.”

Amb got up.

“Babe…” Before I could finish my statement she closed the bedroom door.

I just shook my head and palmed my face. Could this holiday get any worse?
