Chapter 19: How to fail to be cannon fodder for one episode– feat. Tokio (Part 2)

   " Ouroboros? "

Yugi said softly as he stared at the snake and ladders field at the table. Tokio tapped the table with his fingers lightly and explained.

" Ouroboros the Self Eating Snake. The oldest record of it came from Ancient Egypt. The term has been found across multiple cultures and ancient civilizations. Some ancient historians say that the Ouroboros is connected to a minor snake deity of Egypt Mehen. And there was also a board game from ancient Egypt that was called Mehen. Isn't it interesting?  "

Yugi inclined his head. Since his grandpa has told him about some of his travels in Egypt, and his love of games, Yugi was aware of the Mehen and the other ancient board games that came from the country of Egypt.

" So that's why I decided to call this modified snake and ladders Ouroboros. Isn't it very fitting?.. "

Tokio then paused as he notice that Kaiba's expression was getting uglier. His cold blue eyes that were glaring at him were enough to give him shivers.

" Anyway, Kaiba is glaring at me, I should stop the chit-chat and start explaining the rules.. "

For the next few minutes, Tokio started explaining the rules of the game while both Yugi and Kaiba who was standing as a bystander listened to the rules.

All in all the Ouroboros was a hybrid of Snake and Ladders and Monster Duels.

The Rule is as follows:

[ • The two players decide who would be the first to move by a coin toss.

• Each player draws 5 cards at the start of the game

• At the start of the game, both players start with 4000 points

• The level of the monsters decided how many steps can a player have on the board

• The goal of the game was to reach the last square of the board (number 100) but you can also win the game if your opponent's point turn zero while you still have your points. There was also the other way of winning if there is no card to draw, then the one with higher points wins.

• The opponent can attack the opponent's monster on the board just like in the usual monster duel. The monster can be set in attack, face-up defense position, and set defense position.

• The set defense position monster must have its level declared

• In this game, there was a range limit where you can attack the opponent's monster.

° Level 1 monster could attack the opponent's monster if they are in the same spot
° Level 2 monster could attack the opponent monster from the same spot to 1 Square gap
° Level 3 monster could attack the opponent monster from the  same spot to 2 Square gaps
° Level 4 monster could attack the opponent monster from the  same spot to 3 Square gaps
° Level 5 monster could attack the opponent monster from the same spot to 4 square gaps
° Level 6 monster could attack the opponent monster from the same spot to 5 square gaps
° Level 7 monster could attack the opponent monster from the same spot to 6 square gaps

• A player could choose to attack the opponent's monster or not on his turn

• A player can't pass his turn. He/she must make a move by moving his monsters, attacking the opponent's monster, or using a spell card with the exception if the opponent has control of his/her monster

• Ordinary monsters could attack in a row pattern, Warriors could attack in rows and columns while spell casters could attack in a row, column, and diagonal pattern.

• If a monster card is destroyed by the opponent's monster it is sent to the graveyard then the opponent with the destroyed monster is moved back to the previous turn placement

• To move again on the field, the previous monster card needs to be replaced with a new one, the previous turn's surviving monster card would be shuffled down to the deck once it was replaced by a new monster on the field.

• Both Players can only have 40 cards on their deck

• Spell Cards that are usable are Cards that increased points, damage opponent points, monster reborn, spell cards that control the opponent's monsters are changed to the opponent not able to make a turn in that round, spell cards that prevent the opponent's to attack are replaced with them from being able to move, a pot of greed, destroy monster spell cards, shuffle effect spell cards and shuffle effect monsters. Other none usable spell cards are either replaced by having this effect:  your points increase to 500 or inflict damage to your opponent's worth of 500 points.

• Snakes would cause you to lose points and Ladders would cause you to gain points

After Tokio finished explaining, he glance at the two people who were with him in this abandoned warehouse.

" I didn't make a miscalculation by using the favor this time. It was interesting that you can come up with a worthy and creative game. "

Glancing at Kaiba Seto, Tokio doesn't know if he was mocking him or praising him. But it was probably more leaning on the former. He then sighed as he filled up the empty cup with the kettle containing tea on it. Tokio glanced worriedly at Yugi who didn't respond. His heart nearly gave out when he noticed that Yugi wasn't there anymore. The harmless first-year student didn't exist. He was replaced by the Soul of the Pharaoh.

" You have finally shown your true self Yugi! "

Tokio sweatdropped as he heard Kaiba. What the hell, I am terrified for my life but you are so enthusiastic that the Pharaoh who inflicts the shadow games arrived!

Tokio sipped his tea as Yami glanced at him and smiled.

'Calm down yourself, Tokio!'

" So... It's game time. "

'He said it! He said the classic Season 0 Yami Quotes!'

Tokio cried out inside his mind. His nervousness is starting to reach its peak.

" This game Ouroboros is interesting, I accept your challenge Tokio-san. "

The Millenium Puzzle shined for a moment and Tokio decided to ignore that supernatural phenomenon and keep a straight face.

'Fucking hell! There's no backing down!'

It wasn't the nice Yugi that would face him but the Yami who was brimming with confidence.

" Then, let's shuffle each other decks. "

Tokio and Yami passed each other's deck and shuffled them. After shuffling, they return each other's decks. Tokio then took out a coin and passed it to Yami.

" You can toss the coin and choose whether the head or tails are your Muto-san to ensure the fairness of the game. "

Yami's eyes flickered for a moment. Tokio doesn't know if it was an expression of surprise or not. Currently, there was only one important thing on Tokio's mind. He wasn't a cheater. In no way, he would he be punished!

" Then, I choose heads. "

Yami declared and Tokio nodded. That means that he would be tails.

As expected even with his luck of 85, it can't be compared to the number of protagonists.

"It is headed, Tokio-san. "

The two of them draw two cards. Tokio then stared at his cards. Seeing that card wretched a smile, Tokio grinned.

'Jackpot!'

[ Shining Angel, Spirit of the Harp, Pot of Greed, Guardian of the Throne Room, Horn of the Unicorn ]

Yami then revealed his 1st summoned monster card.

" I summon the level 4 Celtic Guardian in attack position. "

[ Celtic Guardian L4 1400/1200 ]

" Celtic Guardian is level 4. It is moved to square tile number 4 where the No.4 ladder is located. I gain +100 points and moved to square tile 14. I end my turn. "

[ Yami P 4000 → 4100 ]

" My turn! I summon a level 4 monster in attack position! "

[ Guardian of the Throne Room L4 1650/1600 ]

" Guardian of the Throne Room is moved to square tile number 4. I gain +100 points. Since my monster is level 4, it can attack the same spot to 3 Square gaps! Guardian of the Throne Room, attack Celtic guardian! "

[ Yami P 4100 → 3850 ]

" I successfully destroyed your monster and you are off the field. "

Tokio glanced at Yami and saw a calm expression on his face. As expected, just mere damage wasn't enough to affect the Pharaoh.

Tokio then reveals his two spell cards.

" I activate the Spell Card Pot of Greed which allows me to draw 2 Cards! "

While saying those words, Tokio can't help but reveal a trace of joy.

[ Darklord Marie, Book of Secret Arts ]

" My other spell card on my hand is the horn of the unicorn. I change this card and choose to inflict 500 damage points on my opponent! "

[ Yami P 3850→ 3,350 ]

Tokio then reveals another spell card in his hand.

" One of the cards that I drew using the pot of greed is a spell card. Equip cards are invalid within the rules of this game! I choose to convert it to inflict 500 damage to my opponent! "

[ Yami P 3,350 →2,850 ]

[ Shining Angel, Spirit of the Harp, Darklord Marie ]

" I end my turn. "

Tokio has inflicted a lot of damage on his first turn. But he knows that it wasn't enough. He then stared at his opponent who was sitting on the opposite chair in front of him. Finally, the calm expression is gone. But it wasn't the expression that Tokio was expecting.

" It's my turn, Tokio-san. "

Yami was smirking and Tokio has an ominous premonition that it was guaranteed that a lot of bad things would happen in the next turns.
