"my soul just wants to be closer to yours."
---

"You can take a seat anywhere," I said once Kayden and I walk inside the house. I close the door behind Kayden, but I see him with furrowed eyebrows while looking around the house. "What's wrong?" I asked wondering why he had that face.

"I thought we were going to your house?" Kayden asked looking down at me.

"We are. This is my Aunt's house. I'm living here."

"Wes isn't your boyfriend, he is your cousin?" I nodded my head and passed him making my way to the kitchen. "Why is he so protective over you then?"

"No clue. We aren't even that close." I shrugged. "Do you want anything to drink?"

"Nah, I'm good."

"You can sit at the table," I said while opening the fridge and getting two water bottles. "How do you know Wes?" I asked once I sat down next to Kayden.

"Ask him. You're his cousin." Kayden shrugged.

I take my folders out of my bag. "I would but he would probably be mad at me."

"It's not my place to tell you why he doesn't like me. But we did use to be friends."

I widen my eyes at him. "Really? Never would have thought." He shrugged his shoulders again and for some reason, I feel annoyed he keeps doing that. "Well let's just get started because I don't want to keep you here longer than you want to."

Kayden leaned back in his chair. "Take your time. I don't care."

"Okay," I said softly while looking through the questions I have down. "What are your thoughts on family?" I asked.

"Family is the most important thing to me," Kayden stated and I knew he wasn't going to say more.

I didn't expect that kind of answer from him because he doesn't seem like a people person but then when I see him with Elijah, he looks like he is relaxed and like he is always happy but in reality, he looks miserable and cold.

It makes me want to know more about him.

With his friends, he is calm and comfortable. With his family or at least with Elijah he smiles and shows that he is happy. At school in front of everyone, he puts on a mask so that people don't see the real him.

"What is one thing you want to accomplish in life?"

Kayden takes a second before replying to that question. I sometimes have trouble answering that.

I don't know what I want to do in life. I mean we all die in the end so what's really the point? I learned that the hard way.

"Life is one big ball of nothing. You don't get anything in the end. You die and end up god knows where. So, I don't have any goal and accomplishment I want to achieve. I mean we are all just surviving in this fucked up world, right?"

"You and I have a lot more in common than I thought," I stated while typing his answer down.

"You think the same?" Kayden asked with a raised eyebrow.

I nodded my head. "Life is a pain in the ass and everyone just dies in the end so there's nothing you are really living for unless you have a loved one but when you don't," I shrugged my shoulders. "You kind of just continue to live it until it's over."

In some weird way, I relate to him. I don't know what he has gone through, but I find myself wanting to know.

Kayden furrowed his eyebrows and I see him studying me with his eyes. I don't look away from him. I just lock my eyes with his.

I noticed that we were now a little closer than before. I could see black pupils dilate but then they went back to their normal size when I hear the door unlock.

Kayden and I move away from one another and look at who entered the house.

"The fuck is he doing here Alexis?!" Wes yelled while closing the front door.

Kayden and I both stand up from where we were sitting. "Relax Wes, he is my partner for this English project we have."

"Bullshit," Wes stated as he walked closer to Kayden and me.

Kayden looked calm though. He was just standing next to me with a raised eyebrow.

"Wes we are just doing homework," I said pointing to the table.

Wes looks at me and then Kayden who raised his eyebrow.

"I swear if you keep talking to her-"

"You'll what Wes? Again, with these empty-handed threats." Kayden said in a bored tone.

Wes tries to lunge towards Kayden, but I block him, standing in front of Kayden.

"Stop. Isabelle said it was fine for him to come over Wes."

"If only she knew the kind of shit, he does Alexis if only you knew the kind shit he does!" Wes said pointing at Kayden.

"We were just working on a project." I rolled my eyes and look at Kayden. "I'll walk you out." Kayden grabbed his stuff while Wes just glared at him. As Kayden and I walked past Wes they both glared at each other. "Sorry about him," I said once we were outside by his car.

"It's whatever. He's always been like that."

"Why can't you tell me what happened between the two of you?" I asked.

Kayden looked at me. "We used to be friends. We disagreed on something. He didn't want me to do something because of how dangerous it was. He lost someone and that scared him. So, he tried to protect me, but I don't need protection." Kayden opens his car door and gets inside.

He rolls down his window.

"Thank you helping me," I said.

I see Kayden's lips lift in a small smile. "See you around Angel." he said making my cheeks heat up a little bit.

I walked away as his car drove down the street. When I get back inside the house, I see Wes still standing where he was when I left.

"He's gone so you can stop having that ugly glare you have on your face," I said while closing the door and walking towards the table that had all of my stuff.

"Are you two together?" Wes asked.

I look back at him with widened eyes. "No. Why would you think that?"

"Because I always see you guys around one another."

"Well, he is just here to help me with a project Wes. You don't have to act like a big brother. That's not your role and never will be." I said before grabbing all of my stuff so I can go to my room.

"Just," I stopped and looked at Wes while I was about to walk upstairs. "Be careful Alexis. I don't want to lose you to."
