Chapter 54- Ella's POV
"Hey love," Edward said. "I missed you."
My heart leapt in my chest upon hearing his words, and I managed to smile just a little bit. My head throbbed painfully and my entire body felt restless.
"Hey," I mumbled. I had not been expecting those words from him. The last time we had spoken, he had wanted nothing to do with me.
"How are you?" he asked, stepping forward. He looked dishevelled. I had not seen him looking like this for a long time. To be fair, I don't remember ever seeing him look like this before.
I sighed, cocking my head to one side. Of course I wasn't good. "Not bad, considering," I said. I sat up to look at him properly. "And you?"
"Relieved," he answered, heaving a sigh. He stepped closer to me, and took a cautious look at the open door, then looked back at me. He was about to speak when I interrupted.
"You're not supposed to be in here, are you?" I asked with a smirk.
He shook his head. "No, I've been banned, actually."
"And what would happen if they found out?" I asked cautiously. I knew this was stupid, and that we had many more important things to talk about, but I couldn't help but worry. My mum had said that the police had been here already... so Edward had to be careful.
Edward attempted a smile. "I don't know, Ella," he said. He seemed to look around him, as if considering his options whether to sit down on the chair or on the floor. He scooted the chair closer to my bed and sat down, taking my hand in his. Warmth filled inside me at his touch. We had only been apart for a day but it had felt like eternity.
"I need you to tell me everything that John told you about all of this," he said solemnly, as if it were the most important thing in the world for him. It probably is, I mused. He was still clueless about what had happened and why John did what he did. I inhaled. It wasn't easy to explain.
"There's so much," I said, shaking my head.
"I know... but I've spoken to him and I don't know whether he's lying, so I need you to help me out."
I looked up at him. "You've spoken to him?" I repeated after him. It wasn't something I would have expected from Edward. I actually wouldn't have blamed him if he had decided not to speak to John ever again. I myself did not want to.
Edward nodded, the solemn look still on his face. I could tell the situation hurt him. "Yes. I needed to know." He squeezed my hand and offered me a smile. "I love you," he said, making my heart melt. "I don't know what I would have done if I had lost you."
I opened my mouth to reply, but a cough caught my attention, and I looked up in panic. My heart increased its beat instantly when I saw that it wasn't my mum or brother who was standing there, but a guy wearing a uniform. I suppressed a gasp. It was a police officer.
Edward's eyes followed mine and he stiffened when he saw who was at the door. He let go of my hands and moved back in his chair, waiting for the young officer to speak. He had very particular gray eyes, brown hair and stubble, a combination which made him look very handsome.
My mind wondered how the heck I could analyze someone's features and declaring them as handsome at a time like this. This was the police, and he had just witness a confession about love and my teacher holding my hand, when in fact he wasn't even allowed inside the hospital room.
The police officer walked into the room, for some reason with a smirk on his face. Edward stood up awkwardly.
"So, Mr James," the officer said, looking from Edward to me. His gaze stopped on me for a few seconds and he took my image in, making me feel very uncomfortable. His gaze was very penetrating. His eyes flickered back to Edward. "We left fifteen minutes ago, and I returned because I was told that Mr Abbott woke up. I thought I had an agreement with you, that you wouldn't enter this room... am I right?" He smirked once again, seeming to wait for Edward to answer.
When he didn't, he continued speaking. "Yet it seems that it's too difficult for you to stay away from your student."
Edward cleared his throat before he spoke. "It's nothing," he said. "I'm sorry I didn't abide by the rules. I had to see how she was doing... I care about all my students."
The look on the officer's face clearly showed that he did not believe Edward for one second. "Yeah, that's all crap," he said. He chuckled. "You shouldn't have broken the rules, Mr James. We'll talk about that later. For now, just get out of here, and don't come back. Not until we say you can."
Edward opened his mouth to speak, but then shut it abruptly and didn't say anything. He glanced at me briefly before walking past the police officer. Just as he was about to leave the room, the officer said something else which made him stop.
"Do you tell all your students that you love them, Mr James?"
My eyes widened and I saw Edward freeze at the door. From the way he was standing still, I could tell that he couldn't say anything. He walked away swiftly, mouthing a "sorry" to me. I nodded and turned my attention towards the officer, who had sat down instead of Edward and had a smug look on his face.
"Does he, then?" he asked me, raising his left eyebrow. I stared at him for a brief moment, trying to understand what he was saying.
"Sorry?" I asked.
"Mr James. Does he tell all of his students that he loves them?" Rather than being bothered about this situation, the officer seemed to be amused by it. I, on the other hand, was confused. What was I supposed to say?
"Um, how should I know?" I asked, trying to look everywhere except in his eyes. My gaze fell on his badge, which read PC Michigan.
"Yeah, it's Officer Michigan," he said, seeming to notice that I had been staring at his badge. He leaned closer and grinned, showing perfectly white and straight teeth. "But you can call me Sean."
I moved back in surprise. Ugh, flirt. I kind of wished that I wasn't eighteen at the moment, so there would be the need of supervision of an adult. I guess my face sort of gave away what I was thinking, because the officer chuckled and leaned back against his seat.
"It's okay, I won't bite, Miss Campbell. I'm only here to see what happened and how you ended up here. Of course, if there is something else which is illegal going on, I'll tackle it too." His eye caught mine and I knew he was referring to Edward and I. We had tried so hard to hide it for such a long time, only to be discovered at the very end. Life was so unfair.
"So," PC Michigan said, clicking his pen. "What exactly caused the accident, Miss Campbell?"
Before I could stop myself, I blurted out, "Are you even allowed to interrogate me while I'm sitting on a hospital bed?"
The officer laughed at my comment. "This is not an interrogation, hun. It's just asking you to give me a brief description of what happened this morning."
I shut my eyes, trying to make sense of all of this. I hadn't discussed the subject with Edward and had no idea what he had said, so I didn't know which story to go with. "I - he lost control of the car, and we crashed into a tree."
"Whose fault was it?"
My eyes met his. "No one as far as I know."
"Miss Campbell," PC Michigan stated, leaning even closer to me than he had done the first time. "Why were you in a car with Mr Abbott?"
I sighed, with no idea what to answer. What would John answer when he'd be asked the same question? I wasn't about to tell PC Michigan that I had had a fight with Edward and we had broken up, and I'd gone to the cottage with John to get a bit of closure, only to find out that he'd actually been the one stalking us, and then I'd tried to run away and John caught me and we collided into a tree when Edward was trying to save me. Even the thought of saying it took all of my breath away.
"I, um, needed a ride to school, and, uh, Mr Abbott happened to be there and he offered to drive me there since he was going that way too." I tried to sound believable, but even as I uttered the words, they sounded futile to me. And with the way the officer was looking at me, I knew that even he did not believe me.
"Do you usually get into teachers' cars, then?" he asked.
I looked away from his gaze and said, "Not really, no."
"Miss Campbell, you don't have to lie here. I'm doing my best to help you. We just want to know what happened." PC Michigan took a deep breath, forcing me to look up.
"I know," I answered. His eyes locked with mine and narrowed just a little bit. He looked at his notebook before speaking to me.
"So..." He paused, as if reading off the book. "Ella." I stopped myself from widening my eyes, for the fact that he'd called me by my name not my surname this time, and he was already acting a bit too friendly for my liking.
"What is your relationship with Mr James?" he asked. The question did not surprise me, frankly I had been expecting him to ask it. But it was still difficult to answer.
"He used to be my teacher...but he's stopped working at the college I attend," I mumbled.
PC Michigan frowned. "So now that he's not teaching you anymore, you're seeing each other?"
"No!" I yelled. Too loudly. Oops. He raised an eyebrow for the umpteenth time.
"Are you saying that the relationship was before he stopped teaching you?"
I shook my head. "There was no relationship," I lied.
PC Michigan moved closer to me, his brow furrowing. "Yes, there was. There still is. I don't know if you've forgotten, but I heard him tell you that he loves you just now. What was that, then?"
I gulped and moved back in my bed, but there was no space where I could move anymore, so I ended up bumping my head to the back of the bed. Ouch. Well, that increased my headache.
I heard a chuckle and looked up, seeing PC Michigan looking at me with a smirk on his face. His hand reached over to mine. "So, is this normal for you then?" His hand was ice cold.
I looked at his hand over mine, then at his face. "What?" I tried to yank my hand away from him but was too tired to do it. He had a strong grip as well, making it more different for me to let go. What the hell? And where was my family when I needed it?
"I'm just checking if it's normal for you. Someone who shouldn't be holding your hand, holding your hand. Because it was okay for Mr James to have his hand on yours earlier, but it's not okay if I do it. So, what makes Mr James okay and me not?"
I shook my hand away from his, this time successfully, and glared at him. "I don't know what you're implying, but whatever you are thinking is not true. And if you touch me again, I will report you," I said in my most poisonous voice.
He laughed and moved away from me. "Touché," he said. "But FYI, if you report me, I will report your boyfriend. They may take away my police warrant, but they'll put him in jail." He stood up and put on a sly grin when he saw my horrified expression. "You'll be seeing me again very soon, Ella."
"Can't wait," I glared at him. He grinned back.
"I know," he said. "I'm going to go and ask questions to your driver Mr Abbott now, see if his words match yours and see if you've been lying." He winked at me. "This is why I ditched Officer O'Brien, so that I could do things my way," he added as a sort of side note. He started walking out of the room. "See ya."
I groaned. I had just gotten rid of one stalker, was he going to be replaced by another one?
And this time there was nothing I could do, because I already knew whom he was, and he'd threatened me directly this time.
Hello everyone :) I've finished my exams so I have time to update more frequently now. I've decided to drag the story on just a little bit, because I've had comments that say that they don't want the story to end, and neither do I hehe :) However, if you think that the story is getting annoying or anything, please tell me.
I hope you enjoyed this chapter! It's not the best, but please do vote and comment!
I chose Jamie Dornan as PC Michigan... I'd written out his description in the last chapter, and tried looking for someone who fitted it. And I remembered my favourite character out of Once Upon a Time, who coincidentally happens to be Mr Grey (but I did not choose him because of that). Anyway, since he was sheriff on OUAT and is very good looking, he fit the role completely.
Please tell me what you think about PC Michigan and on the whole chapter :)
