Chapter 38- Ella's POV

I heard the doorbell ring and my mother shuffle down the hall to answer it. It was quite a coincidence that she was already home, usually she did not get her until around 7pm, and it was only 5.30pm. She had managed to get off early from work for once. Not that I minded, for once I was able to spend some time with her.

I was so angry at Edward. I couldn't believe what he had told me. He had kept the truth from me for so long. All this time, I had been worried about Nathan bullying him, when in truth, I didn't really blame him. He had dated his mum! That must have been disgusting for Nathan, as well as awkward. Edward was quite young for her, too. No wonder Nathan hated him. And right now, I felt like I shared the way he felt about him. He had been acting like a victim with Nathan when in reality he had been the one to blame. Honestly, I couldn't be angrier at him that he hid the truth from me. I understood Nathan's reason for not telling me- it wasn't his story to tell, and anyway, it was embarrassing for him, too, but Edward? He just wanted to look like the perfect person.

I hated that Edward had dated Nathan's mum, who was flawless and almost forty, and then chose to date me, when I was only seventeen years old. Oh, and there had been Beth somewhere in between, I suppose. Such an age difference amongst his girlfriends. Really, I didn't blame Nathan for saying that he's a player. Okay, that's too harsh. He never actually cheated. But he certainly knows which women to date. He could get anyone he wants, and I'm so angry at myself for falling for him.

I still love him, though. And I'm angry at myself for this, too.

The moment that the doorbell rang, I had been upstairs, changing back into my pyjamas. It wasn't like I was going anywhere. Then I heard his voice.

"It's not what you think!" someone bellowed. Was it him or was I imagining? No, it couldn't be him.

But it was his voice I had heard...

I heard my mum reply. "Yes... who are you please?"

Silence followed after that, and curiosity got the better of me. I pulled on my t-shirt quickly and walked out of my room. Muffled voices could be heard. It was my mum speaking.

"I've seen you before, at the grocery store, right?" I heard mum say. No answer so far.

This was weird. Very weird. And when I heard the voice that replied, I confirmed just how strange the situation was.

"Umm... yes ma'am, I have seen you before.... at umm... the store. Nice to see you again... although, please, do excuse me for barging in like that." He laughed, nervously I could tell.

By the time he had said the word "ma'am", I had already started jolting down the stairs. Edward looked at me in horror as I arrived in front of him. As our eyes met, I could see his panicked state. But I couldn't feel sorry for him. I glared at him.

Mum didn't even seem to realise that I was standing behind her. She continued speaking to Edward. "Oh, don't worry about that. Do you know Malcolm?"

Edward scratched his heck, while I smirked. I knew what his answer would be, because he did know Malcolm. He just knew me better. "Yeah... I do."

My mother frowned. "Well, I don't think he's home right now...to be honest, I wonder if he will be here at all this evening." She turned around and seemed to notice me for the first time. "Honey," she said. "Is Malcolm going to be home tonight? Have you seen him?"

I muttered something about him saying that he said that he would be spending his weekend somewhere else, and she went off in search of her phone to confirm to Edward what I had just said. I turned to Edward.

It was enough that he had kept the truth from me for so long, did he have to show up at my door when my mum was home, as well? Not to mention that he was acting like a right fool in front of her, too.

Okay, that was mean. He was in an uncomfortable situation. Both of us were. And we had to get through this before we actually got to talk about Lauren and Nathan. And I wasn't looking forward to either task.

"What the hell are you doing here?" I said in a loud whisper.

"I'm sorry, Ella! I didn't plan on this happening!" he answered in the same tone.

"Sorry for what?" I asked, still glaring.

Edward frowned. "Everything!" His voice became softer. "I just wanted to come here and explain, because you didn't let me. I didn't expect your mum to be here!"

"Are you sure you're not here on purpose? You know to see my mum and all, since you're into your students' parents!" I snapped back at him. It was so mean and so unfair, and I knew that they were the cruelest words I had ever said to him.

He blinked once, twice, before he actually said anything. His face got red and I felt so sorry for what I had said. "Seriously? I do something wrong before I even met you, and this is the way you treat me? I was honest with you, Ella. What the hell." He shook his head and turned around so that he wasn't facing my way.

I felt so guilty. "I'm sorry, Edward." I placed a hand on his arm. He didn't react. "But you can't blame me for being angry."

Edward turned back around, his eyes meeting mine. "Yeah, there's a difference between being angry and insulting someone."

I looked into the hallway, checking that my mum was still occupied with her phone and wasn't back yet. "I'm sorry, really," I said to Edward. "But we have this to worry about now."

Edward bit his lip. "Should we tell her the truth?" he asked.

I looked at him like he was crazy. "Are you serious? Of course not!" I practically shouted. "How can we even-" I was interrupted by my mother entering the room and speaking at the same time. I quickly retreived my hand off Edward's arm and stepped away from him. I turned to listen to what mum was saying.

"Malcolm said he's away for the whole weekend, sorry dear. I'll tell him you stopped by. What's your name, please?" My mother smiled at him. Yeah, she was really nice. I just wished I could spend more time with her.

"I'm Edward," he answered, shaking her hand. "Nice to meet you, Mrs Campbell." He flashed her the smile that could literally get him anywhere, it was that irresistable. And I knew just that that she had approved of him, at least as Malcolm's friend.

My mother waved her hand away, as if swatting a fly or something. Suddenly I felt like I wasn't really needed in the room, they were going to get on just well. "Oh, please call me Alexandra. Nice to meet you too." Great, my boyfriend and mum have just introduced themselves to each other, without my help.

Edward flashed a smile. "Thank you. Er, I have to go now, but thank you so much for welcoming me in your home." Good, he's leaving. Finally the awkwardness would be over.

"Wait!" Darn, what now. My mum was looking at Edward as she said this. "Do you want to stay for a cup of coffee?"

"No!" I found myself yelling.

"Oh no, ma'am..." Edward said at the same time. His eyes widened when he heard my answer. My mum turned to me abruptly.

"Ella! Don't be rude, what's your problem?" When I didn't reply, she added, "Do you two know each other?"

Whilst I replied with a no, Edward mumbled, "Yeah." I glared at him. He was ruining everything.

Mum's eyes narrowed. I could tell she wasn't liking this. She turned to Edward and smiled kindly at him. "Sit down, I'll make you a cup of coffee." She turned around and walked to the kitchen. And a good thing to, because I was ready to blurt out, "He doesn't even like coffee!"

Edward looked at me, shrugged and sat down on the couch. I sat down next to him. "I think we might be in trouble. Mum's being too nice," I whispered.

Edward put a hand to his forehead, looking like he was deeply in thought. "This is crazy," he mumbled. "I'm meeting your mother. Your mother! I feel like such a liar right now. I'm a freaking teacher dating his barely legal student! And she's so nice! Oh, I really do hate this," he said, moving his hands down his face, so that his voice became all funny. "And you know what makes it worse?" he added, removing his hands from his face. "I actually know her! I see her at the grocery store occasionally, and say good morning to her! Uggghhh."

"Yeah, I know. This sucks," I turned to Edward. "I don't think we should tell her."

Edward frowned. "Why not?" he asked. "Your brother seems to be fine with it."

"My brother took two months to be fine with it. And my mum's different! Of course she's not gonna like it."

Edward bit his lip, then released it. "Yeah, fine. But she should know that we know each other." I opened my mouth to speak, but he stopped me and continued, "And we have to talk about us, too, whether you like it or not." I pursed my lips, but again he didn't let me say anything, because he leaned towards me and pecked me softly. He ran his thumb across my lip, making me quiver. "We'll be okay," he whispered.

In spite of my efforts to stay angry at him, I knew I couldn't. Not with him making me want him so badly. With my mum in the next room, yeah. I pulled away from him and stood up. "I should be helping my mum," I said. "She'll wonder why I'm here with you." Edward reached his hand out to me, but I ignored him and ran upstairs to change back into my jeans, because I knew mum would tell me something if we had visitors and I was lurking around in pyjamas with smiley faces on them.

I wasn't ready to forget about Edward and his ex. Not yet. He couldn't possibly think that he would lure me back in with his charming behaviour. I ran back downstairs, made brief eye contact with my boyfriend, and walked into the kitchen. Mum had just finished brewing coffee, which she then put into three mugs. She instructed me to carry a small plate filled with cookies to the living room, where Edward was sitting. He smirked when he saw me.

"I must say you look good doing anything," he said. I shushed him, because I knew mum was following me. I didn't want her to find out about us. Not when we were fighting, who knew what might happen? Edward was trying so hard to acting like everything was normal, but I just couldn't. Nothing about us was normal. It never had been.

My mum walked in and handed us a mug of coffee each, sitting down with hers. This was quite unusual with us, actually. My mum rarely invited our friends for coffee and to talk. But I guess she wanted to get to know our friends better. I mentally rolled my eyes. She actually believed that Edward was Malcolm's friend. Or so I thought. She too could be onto us, I now realised. I looked up at her in horror, just as she spoke.

"So tell me, Edward, do you know my daughter?" She sounded just like my dad would have, inquiring about how a guy knows his daughter.

"No," I said, just as Edward said, "Yes." I glared at him.

Mum looked at both of us in confusion, probably sensing the tension between the two of us. "Do you or don't you?" she asked. This time I didn't answer, because I knew that Edward was going to speak anyway.

"Yeah, we do," Edward said, eyeing me as he took a sip from his coffee.

"Really?" My mum smiled. "How?"

"Through Malcolm," I said.

Edward's eyes crossed. "Actually," he started saying, and paused, probably because of the daggers that my wide eyes were shooting at him. He was literally doing anything he could to make me even more angry at him than I already was.

 "Yes?" Mum asked.

"I'm her teacher." Edward smiled, his irresitable smile yet again. I groaned, making him and my mum turn to me in surprise.

Later, when Mum and I were clearing the plate and mugs which had been previously filled with cookies and coffee, she said, "He's so nice. I'm glad teachers are so young these days. They understand students so much better."

I smirked as I handed her the plate. Of course they understand students better. Ask Edward.

I was still so angry at him, by the way. After mum had found out that he was my teacher, her and him had had a discussion about school, syllabus, how I was doing... and basically let's just say mum didn't need to go to my Parents' Day, because they discussed all there was that could be discussed about my academic life. And then Edward offered to drive me to and from school when Malcolm wasn't available. Mum accepted and thanked him. Smart guy. He had her totally fooled. And I just stood there, throwing metaphoric daggers at him.

My mother's phone started ringing, and she picked it up from the table and frowned as soon as she saw the caller ID. "It's from work," she told me. She answered, and as I listened to her speaking about whether she would be able to make it at work earlier the following day, I continued washing the dishes. Edward was still in the living room. Mum seemed to remember this, because she cupped her mouth and whispered to me, "Go and show him to the door, it's getting late."

I nodded and didn't answer, although I wasn't too happy about it. I didn't want to talk to Edward. I needed space. I dried my hands on a table cloth and shuffled to the living room, where I found him glancing at family pictures hung on the wall. I crossed my arms. He hadn't noticed me yet. "Mum said to throw you out,' I said rudely.

He turned and smirked. "I'm sure that those were the exact words she said," he answered. Still, he started walking to the door, with me following behind awkwardly. Today had to be one of my rudest days ever. Edward had probably already paid for not having told me about Nathan's mum and him.

He got to the front door, opened and stepped out into the cold air, then turned to me. I was still inside. I stepped out beside him. "So," I said. "That was a weird turnout of events."

Edward nodded. "Indeed. But it went well, I've got to say." He put his hands into his jeans pocket and looked back up at me. I hugged my elbows. It was quite cold outside, and I wasn't wearing a jacket.

"It was fine," I mumbled. I looked down at my fingers, unable to look at him directly.

"Can I see you tomorrow?" Edward's question made me jerk my head up so fast that I got dizzy. I frowned.

"Not really," I said, looking away once again. My eyes turned to the inside of the house, in the hall. I could hear mum still talking on the phone. Then, when I turned back around to talk to Edward, I was surprised to find that he had removed his hands from his pockets and was standing much more closer to me. He rested his hand on my lower back and stepped even more forward, so much that I could feel his breath on me.

"Come on, Ella," he whispered against my cheek. His breath felt funny on my ear and I didn't dare look up. Then I felt his lips on my neck and I stiffened. I couldn't hold back anymore, and I looked up.

In an instant his lips were on mine, kissing me with such passion that I felt myself succumbing to him, and found myself kissing him back, losing my breath quickly. Both hands went around me as he caressed my cheek, and then his lips crushed against mine again, this time with much more urgency. I felt his tongue trying to make its way into my mouth and I wanted to punish him, wanted to stop him because that was what he deserved for keeping such and important secret from me, but I found that I couldn't. I let myself kiss him and give up what I believed in, and I was the one to deepen the kiss. Edward then stepped back to take a breath, still looking at me as he held me. I knew what that look meant. It meant that we had so much more to talk about... and not just talk.

Right now we just had to get off my mother's porch, though.

I'm so in love with this guy.
