Third Person
Pt.2 of 2

Storming over to the infuriating woman that he's come to know, Jesse stops in front of her expecting some form of explanation as to why he just walked in on what looked like a cutthroat game of musical chairs being played by a bunch of mini people.

If you can even call them that.

For Godsakes, it smells like plastic and fresh tears in here.

Karma stares at him with her lips curled into her mouth and he can tell she's proud of herself in tricking him into coming here.

He knew he should've typed in the address to google earth or something before just blindly following the directions.

She smiles at him widely as he stands in front of him almost mocking him and the look on his face.

Holding up a finger towards him she looks back at the kids and tells them, "I'm sorry Destiny. We can always play again and I promise you'll do great next time." She says while Destiny is currently in another volunteer, Angela's arms as she puts her back.

She walks over to the blue playmat as Jesse stands in her spot watching her with his arms crossed as she removes a red chair so there are six left now.

Walking back over to Jesse, she begins to play the next nursery rhyme and the kids continue to play again.

Jesse elbows Karma and says, "You fucking tricked me." Causing Karma to laugh and throw her head back. Giovanni, one of the kids in the room, turns his head and sees this exchange as he's playing and it causes him to stumble one of the chairs slowing down the kids behind him again.

Karma shakes her head as she keeps an eye on the kids and the game, "I didn't trick you I just didn't tell you the whole truth. Look, I couldn't bring you to my house for personal reasons so I just thought that this would be easier. I'm closing up tonight after the kids leave we could just hang here." She pauses and Jesse still looks irritated, "What do you even have to lose?" She pauses, "The snacks are on me?" She says continuing to smile

Jesse looks at her long and hard, still irritated at the fact that the girl who lost the game when he first walked on was still crying in the distance. He shakes his head and says, "Whatever." As he goes back to looking at the kids and Karma takes this as an opportunity to freeze the music again

The kids scramble to the seats again, a boy being the last one and the one to lose.

The game continues to be played as Jesse tries to rush her saying that she's letting the music play too long because he was tired of standing next to her.

Karma told him that he could sit down next to the other volunteers and hesitated for a while before walking to his seat, mumbling to himself as he gets there.

The other volunteers are waiting for the game to be over so they can start the next activity. Jesse goes to the far back of the room wondering why he even showed up for Karma in the first place.

He sits down next to a red-headed girl who's scrolling on her phone but then does a double-take looking at Jesse and then back to her phone, back to Jesse again.

Flipping her hair over her shoulder, she straightens her posture as he crosses his arms staring at the little people ahead of him watching as Karma controls the game.

He didn't know why he was tolerating Karma but he knew there was something familiar about her personality that he was drawn to. He couldn't help but to want to be around her even if it was just to make fun of her so he could see her roll her eyes at him again.

She didn't take his shit half the time and it was nice.

The girl next to him, Olivia, taps his shoulder as she tries to get his attention. Looking over at her, he raises an eyebrow expecting her to continue. "Are you a new volunteer?" She says lowering her voice and he could almost laugh at her attempt to seduce him with his voice.

He didn't feel like speaking so he just shook his head to keep it brief, saying no.

Leaning closer she says, "You know I've been here for a while. It's a chill place to volunteer and if you need hours I could train you if you want."

"I'm good." He sighs continuing to look ahead as another kid falls on their ass when they've been pushed to the ground.

Who knew so much anger could fit in those tiny bodies?

It's not that Jesse hated children he just didn't see why people kept having them.

"Are you positive?" She asks again

"As a pregnancy test." He sighs noticing the irony considering the room he's in.

She giggles at his joke and says, "Ok. You know where to find me." She purrs before leaning back in her seat.

He looks at her from the corner of his eye before focusing on the game again chuckling to himself.

As the game goes on, one by one they're taken out and he slightly enjoys how vicious the game was.

Giovanni wins the game and he lets everyone know how excited he is by pumping his fists in the air

As he waits for the snot buckets (as he sees them) to go home, they begin to switch to the next activity which is coloring.

One of the volunteers, Emily, starts to feel under the weather so she decided it's best to go home. The girls were low and volunteers and the owner of the daycare took off of work for the day.

So somehow low and behold they got Jesse to stand in somehow not being able to say no to a bunch of women in front of little kids. He walks around the room looking for anyone that might be doing what the volunteers consider wrong. Although he didn't know what they could possibly do when they're 2'4.

He sees a little boy coloring in a monster truck and he immediately recognizes him as the winner of the game they played earlier. He was going to walk past him before he felt someone tug on his hoodie.

"I saw the way you were flying with my woman." He crosses his arms across his little chest looking at Jesse trying to intimidate him and failing.

Chuckling, Jesse bends to his level and says, "Flying? Did you mean flirting?" Jesse corrects him watching as the little boy begins to pout more, "And who is exactly is your woman?"

Huffing and tightening his arms, the little boy says, "Karma. Duh." he points at her quickly and drops his hand when he sees her turn around and begin to scan the room, keeping an eye on them as she goes back to having a conversation with a little brunette girl.

Jesse quickly glances at Karma and smiles small at the little boy, "What's your name?"

"Giovanni." Giovanni looks up at the older boy in wonder at why he's even here but he wants to focus on the fact that he's a threat trying to push up on his woman.

"You like Karma, huh?" the little boy nods, "Well you know she's a little too old for you, right?"

"Well, I heard age is nothing but a number," he says defiantly

"Yeah, but you don't want to date a girl who's that much taller than you right?" Jesse tries to reason with him.

"My mom says that builds character." Jesse gives up and just nods at what he says. He decides to sit down and realizes he couldn't fit in the chair because it was made for kids

"Shit, why couldn't they get normal-sized chairs?" he says looking at the chair from different angles.

"Shit." Jesse hears a little voice say and he looks up quickly to see Giovanni continuing to color in his book as he mouths the word to himself

"No. No! Don't say that shi--stuff. Don't say that stuff." Jesse says to him as Giovanni looks up at him and says, "Why?"

"Because it's a bad word and you shouldn't say it."

"I shouldn't say shit?"

"Jesus Christ! Fuck. Don't say it again." Jesse tries again not realizing his slip-up

"I shouldn't say fuck or shit again?" he asks tilting his head to the side.

"Oh my God. No. Stop" he covers the little boy's mouth as the boy laughs quietly behind his hands

"You're funny, Mr.Man."

"Yeah, I'm hoping I'm fucking hilarious" Jesse mumbles under his breath.

"Fuc--" Giovanni starts again before Jesse covers his mouth.

"Please. Stop."

--------------------------

The kid's parents came and picked them up. All the volunteers left besides Karma because it was her turn to close up. It was around 5 PM at this point.

Karma and Jesse turned on the movie using Karma's laptop.

Jesse searched up the plot for the movie on his phone as the movie began. Karma was heating up popcorn in the microwave as Jesse was sitting with his legs in front of him on the mat.

When the popcorn is done, Karma sits back down and sits crisscrossed next to him. Making sure to give some space between the two of them.

Almost thirty minutes pass by as they watch the movie and Jesse can feel himself falling asleep a few times as his head falls to the side but he forces himself to wake up fully.

Karma has tied her braids back and is now wearing her glasses since they decided to turn off the lights. Throughout the whole time that movie has been on, Jesse didn't even notice that her glasses were on but he appreciated how it looked on her.

They've gotten to the point in the movie where they give the main character a makeover by cutting her hair and removing her glasses. This was the part of the movie where both of them didn't understand because the movie made it seem like glasses can make someone look like an ugly duckling. Karma felt personally offended even if her glasses were typically meant for reading, this trope in movies had always bothered her. Neither of them said this to each other not wanting to create any awkward conversation.

As the movie continued Karma and Jesse's focus on the movie shifted onto their phones. They didn't even know what was going on in the movie with the amount of time they had been scrolling on Twitter or Instagram.

Not knowing where her notepad was where she was supposed to take notes she looked to her left where her bag was and started sifting through it.

Suddenly feeling the need to go to the bathroom, he looked to his left and leaned in closer, whispering her name rather than saying it out loud for the movie theater effect.

Finally finding her notebook she whispers a quiet, "Yes!" and humming an 'mhm' towards him before quickly turning back to him but neither of them were prepared for what happened next.

Jesse and Karma's eyes widened in shock as their lips had been connected the moment Karma turned her head, not knowing how truly close Jesse was to her.

They stared at each other as they both endured the longest, most still, kiss that either of them has ever had.

Finally snapping out of their trance, they both ripped away from each other and scoot to the other side of the rooms with their backs against the wall staring at each other. Looking away awkwardly they turned their heads to the movie. Each of them not knowing how to feel after having their lips pressed together that way.

They stay silent this way for the rest of the movie.

An hour later when the movie is over, they both stand up quickly. Karma begins packing up her things fast and tries her hardest to avoid Jesse's eyes as he stares at her back that's turned to him when she's packing her bag.

She turns back around in shock that he's looking at her so intensely. The look in his eyes almost scaring into intimidation immediately. She doesn't know what to say so decides it's best to keep quiet, slinging her bag onto her shoulder.

"U-Um. I-I think I'll just call an uber and get going. We're done here." she says finally expecting him to get in his car and leave but he surprises her when he says

"Get in my car." Those four words scaring her more than anything at this moment and shes quick to decline

"N-no. That's cool. You don't have to I-I'd rather just--"

"Karma." he interrupts, "Get in my truck. Now." He walks to the door and opens it for her waiting for her to follow as he stands at the doorway.

Sighing inaudibly feeling a weight being put on her chest, she walks slowly to the door grabbing the spare key that was given to her to lock up the daycare. When she gets to the door he shuts it behind her and she twists the key in the lock, feeling even more nervous as she feels his breath traveling along her neck as he's standing dangerously close than either of them are used to.

They get into his car as Jesse turns the key in the ignition beginning to drive off to Karma's house.

-------------------------

When Jesse gets to Karma's house he parks near the driveway. Karma is more than grateful that his windows are so tinted because the last thing she needs is her parents seeing her in here with a boy.

Saying 'thank you' quickly, Karma goes to open her door when she realizes that it's not opening. She plays with the handle jerking it upwards a few times, giving up as she turns her head back to look at Jesse in the passenger seat as she sighs looking at him silently telling him to open the door now that she sees he placed it on child's lock.

"Open the door, Jesse." She says softly and everything she says goes in one ear and out the other for Jesse as he finds himself leaning closer.

He shakes his head slowly as he leans so close that she feels his breath on the tip of her nose. Her eyes now looking at his chin as she refuses to make eye contact.

Lifting up her chin with his thumb and index finger, their eyes are locked on one another. Both of them not daring to let go of the other one's stare.

Licking his lips, quickly allowing his eyes to dart from her eyes, lips, and back to her eyes again, Jesse moves his hand from her chin, now grasping the left side of her neck. He feels her breath begin to hitch in her throat causing him to smirk at his effect on her that he didn't even know he had.

"Not before I get a taste." And with that, he brings their lips together, again, softly feeling satisfied as her lips begin to move against his. So in tune with each other, they move in sync as Karma takes her hand and places it at the nape of his neck, both of them enjoying the kiss more than they should be.

But neither one of them can find it in themselves to let go.
