Mia was calling, so Ellie answered her phone. She didn’t look to see who it was first, because obviously, right then, it was Mia.

“Hi,” she said.

“Hey,” Mia said. “I got your number from Mark.”

“He said.”

“Is this okay? Calling out the blue?”

“Yep,” Ellie said. “Why didn’t you sooner?”

“Maybe I was waiting for you to call me.”

“Were you?”

Mia hesitated, then said, “Yes.”

“Oh,” Ellie said. “Yeah, fair enough.”

“So why didn’t you?”

“Didn’t have your number,” Ellie said, then decided that was a stupid lie, since Mia could easily check, and also that she didn’t want to lie, not ever. “Not until just now,” she added quickly.

“Okay,” Mia said. “Well anyway, it’s sorted, I called you. So, um. Hi.”

“Hi.”

Silence.

Neither of them spoke. The silence dragged on.

Ellie suddenly didn’t know what to say. Or rather, she knew exactly what she wanted to say, that she wanted Mia and wanted sex, but she couldn’t say that. And not saying one thing meant she was thinking too much about it. She was concentrating so hard on what she wasn’t saying, that her mind was suddenly empty of everything else. She couldn’t come up with a single piece of polite conversation to fill the silence.

Mia didn’t seem to be talking either. Ellie hoped she was having the same problem.

Ellie sat there, and thought about sex, and what completely different thing she ought to try and talk about.

She wanted to talk about sex. She wanted to tell Mia how she felt. It seemed silly not to, when they both knew why Mia had just called.

Ellie wondered if she should.

After a moment, she decided she couldn’t think of a single reason no to. Not one.

“Want to have sex again?” Ellie said.

“Okay,” Mia said.

“Right now?”

“If you like,” Mia said, and sounded like she was trying not to laugh.

“Don’t laugh at me,” Ellie said. “I’m serious. Is anyone home at your place?”

“Yep.”

“Oh,” Ellie said. “Um, Mark’s home here.”

“Okay.”

“So I guess the thing is, who’s it less embarrassing if they know we are?”

“Here,” Mia said quickly. “Definitely here. Can you keep quiet?”

“I’m quiet.”

“Yeah,” Mia said. “Actually you are. Come over here then.”

“I’m on my way.”

“Really?” Mia sounded surprised.

Ellie was suddenly unsure. “Um, yeah,” she said. “I mean, if you want me to? If you weren’t just teasing?”

“I wasn’t teasing. Come over.”

“I’m on my way,” Ellie said. “Bye.”

She was almost on her way.

First she jumped in the shower, quickly, mainly to do her legs. She got out and put the clothes she’d been wearing back on. Then she changed her mind and got a dress she knew she could take off easily, and then, once it was on, she suddenly thought about nice underwear, and got some that matched from the back of her drawer. She took off the dress to put on the bra, and also put on more body spray, since she was undressed anyway. She left her hair, but did her eyes, then her lips, then changed her mind and wiped the lip gloss off, since she was going on a booty call to someone she knew liked to kiss. She put her hair up, and chewed some gum instead of brushing her teeth, and decided she was ready.

She checked the time, worried she was mucking around too much. It had only been eight minutes since Mia had called.

That was pretty good.

She grabbed the first shoes she saw, which were flat, but it didn’t really matter if she was only driving to Mia’s and then taking them off, and shouted goodbye to Mark as she left, because they usually did, so the other one knew to panic if they heard strange noises in the hall.

Mark didn’t answer, which meant maybe he didn’t hear, because he was quite often in his room with headphones on.

Ellie stopped, and thought that almost meant that Mia could come there, except that Mark might notice eventually if Mia was around, and start to wonder, and that would be bad, so no.

She went outside and got in her car and drove to Mia’s, and she was breathless and wet and her hands were shaking with excitement, which probably meant she wasn’t very safe to drive at all. Luckily it was late enough the roads were quiet.

While she was driving, she thought, and that probably distracted her too.

She thought about how she was changing. About the way she’d been with Mia on the phone, just now, and how simply asking for what she wanted had worked out fairly well. There was a lesson in that, she decided, and she ought to do it more often. She ought to be more confident. She was going to be more confident, at least about Mia. Mia liked her. Mia was into her. Mia knew she didn’t know how to fuck properly and still wanted to do it with her.

There was no reason at all to keep being so nervous.

She’d be more sure of herself, Ellie decided. She wouldn’t worry as much. She’d be open to Mia, and what was happening with her, and she definitely wouldn’t play games. No more games about who phoned who. No games at all.

Ellie was pleased with what she’d decided, and she was excited to be seeing Mia again so soon as well.

She found a park near Mia’s building, and walked up to the front door. There were buttons, and a buzzer, and she suddenly realized she didn’t know which apartment number Mia’s was.

She texted Mia and said, “I’m outside. Which doorbell do I push?”

After a moment, the door buzzed and clicked.

“Come up,” Mia texted. “Thirty-four. But walk slow.”

Ellie looked at that for a moment, puzzled, then realized. Mia must still be getting ready.

She pulled the door open, and went up to the third floor, then down the hall to Mia’s apartment. She remembered the way once she was inside. She walked slowly, like Mia had said, but not slowly enough.

When she knocked, someone else opened the door.

Someone who wasn’t Mia. A woman Ellie had never seen before.

It must be one of Mia’s housemates, Ellie realized, at the same time as she realized there was something going on inside the apartment. As the door opened, she heard a raised voice, a frustrated voice. Mia’s voice, Ellie was fairly sure. Mia saying leave the door, Mia would get it, and Mia being ignored.

The housemate had probably been closer, and was ignoring Mia on purpose, opening the door for Ellie, making a fuss of it, teasing.

Ellie almost understood.

If Mia at home was anything like how she was with Ellie, the housemate probably got quite desperate to tease her sometimes. And Ellie was pretty sure it was teasing. The housemate was standing there, blocking the door, getting in the way, looking at Ellie and grinning like she’d just won a race or something.

“Hi,” Ellie said.

Behind the housemate, Ellie could see Mia. She was halfway across the room, halfway to the front door, like maybe she’d just run down the hall. She was looking worried, almost looking slightly annoyed, and her expression made Ellie suddenly certain there’d just been a thing about who opened the door.

Ellie was quite pleased to have caused that excitement.

She looked at Mia, and wanted Mia.

Mia had on jeans and a tee shirt and had wet hair, so she must have just had a shower as well. Her hair was dripping and making wet spots on her shirt, and her hair was all tangled too, like she hadn’t had time to do anything with it. Like she might have had a towel on it until about thirty seconds ago, and possibly had just thrown the towel behind the couch.

Ellie grinned at Mia, and Mia’s housemate looked at Ellie, nosily.

The housemate was curious, Ellie thought, so she looked back at her.

“Hi,” the housemate said to Ellie.

“This is Ellie,” Mia said.

“I assumed,” the housemate said, then “I’m Tasha,” to Ellie.

“Hi,” Ellie said.

“Ellie’s just here to, um…” Mia said, then stopped.

There was a slight pause. A silence.

“Fuck,” Ellie said. “Basically. I’m here to fuck.”

Everyone looked at her. Mia looked a bit startled. Then the housemate started to grin.

“I mean,” Ellie said. “Just if we’re being honest.”

“Fair enough,” Tasha said. “Do come in.”
