"Okay so, you're gonna put your fists up, you always have to be prepared. Take a quick step back, step forward, step back and swing!" He said. He had demonstrated what he was talking about.

"You make it look so easy." I said. He walked over to me and put my hands up.

"Just takes practice." He said. I balled my hands into fists and Robin moved to stand next to me.

"Ready?" He asked. I nodded my head.

"Take a quick step back, step forward, step back and swing! Again." I had tried to follow along with him but I felt so stupid.

"Quick step back, forward, step back, swing!" After a couple tries, I'd gotten the hang of it. But obviously I wasn't a professional.

"Okay, now I want you to try and hit me." He said. My eyes widened and I swear I thought he was kidding, so I laughed. I stopped laughing and looked at him. He looked so serious.

"Oh you're serious?" He nodded.

"Robin no. I'm not gonna hit you."

"Just do it, you won't hurt me." He rolled his eyes.

"No."

"Don't you trust me?" I hate it when he says that.

I actually love it.

"Fine." I did as he told me. Quick step back, step forward, step back and swing. As I swung at him, he put up his hand to block me from actually hitting him in the face. He shook his hand and I stepped back.

"Robin I hate this." I admitted.

"You're not going to hurt me amor." We continued for about an hour. We were actually making progress. He had blocked all my hits so I didn't actually ever punch him, but it was easier to have an actual figure to swing at instead of just air.

"Now you don't have to be afraid to go to school." He said. I ran up and hugged him tightly. He held my head against him.

"Thank you." I kissed his cheek and his face turned red. I went inside and Robin had walked home.

"Momma? Are you home?" No answer. I set down my bag disappointingly. I knew the good moments with her wouldn't last long. I sat on the couch and just wasted my time watching tv for about an hour.

"Fuck." I turned around to see my mom stumbling through the door. She was holding a bunch of grocery bags full of food. I jumped up and went to help her. I set the bags on the counter and looked at her confused.

"What's all this?" I asked.

"What does it look like?" Now I see where I get my attitude.

"Why did you buy all of this?"

"I figured you'd probably be tired of microwaved food and leftovers. Plus I thought maybe you could have a friend over tomorrow night."

"Wait, really..?" She nodded and started putting away the food. I wanted to hug her, but physical affection wasn't really our thing.

"Thank you momma."

"Don't thank me. Go do your homework and wash up for dinner." She said. I did as I was told and went to my room to finish some science homework. After a while, my mom called me out to eat. After dinner I got on the phone and called Gwen's house. Her dad answered the phone and then Gwenny got on.

"What's up?"

"Hey so, my mom said I could have someone over tomorrow and you know you're one of my only friends in this town so-"

"I'd love to!" She interrupted. She sounded really excited.

"Alright. After school we'll walk home together. We have a lot to talk about." I said excitedly. We hung up the phone and I put away my dishes. I got ready for bed and went to sleep.

I woke up super early that morning, before my alarm even. I got ready for school and sat in bed for a good hour. I was super tired but I couldn't go back to sleep. Not now.

I heard a knock on the front door and I got up to answer it. I rubbed my eyes and yawned as I walked. I ran into the side of the couch on my way to the door and got all mad at it.

"Bitch." I kicked the couch and then went to open the door. Robin was standing, waiting for me. He smiled at me, even though I looked pissed and tired. Seeing him smile changed my whole mood.

"There you are." I hugged him then pulled him in the house. We still had 30 minutes before we had to leave.

"You okay?" He asked.

"Yeah I just didn't sleep well." I rubbed my eyes which felt really puffy. I sat down on the couch with Robin and leaned my head against his shoulder.

"Take a nap amor. We have time." He said. He pulled a blanket over me and got me comfortable.

"You're ready real early mi hija." My mom said, walking in the room.

"I know momma. I couldn't sleep." I closed my eyes to the sound of my mom and Robin talking. I couldn't hear what they were saying and I didn't really care either. They were just background noise since I was so tired. I could feel myself drifting off into sleep but I tired my best to stay awake. My eyes felt heavy and my brain shut off. Before I knew it, I was sleeping.

𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗻'𝘀 𝗣𝗢𝗩:
"You're ready real early mi hija."

"I know momma. I couldn't sleep." Alina's mom had walked into the room and then into the kitchen.

"Nice to see you again Robin."

"You too Mrs.Rodriguez." I said. I looked down at Alina leaning against me. She looked so zoned out and tired. I tried to speak softly so she'd be able to fall asleep.

"Please, call me Maria." Her mom said. I smiled and nodded slightly. I saw her open the fridge and take out a cold beer. She only took one sip before setting the bottle back in the fridge.

I looked down to see Alina peacefully sleeping against me. She was adorable. I sat and thought about the whole argument Alina had with Melissa. Why didn't she want to tell me? I thought she could trust me. Maybe she just wanted to try and deal with it herself but I liked when she came to me for help. For anything really.

It made me feel like I had a purpose. More than just being the school fighter or some tough kid who won't take shit from other kids. My job was to protect Alina. That's all I wanted to do. I find myself constantly thinking about her and her safety.

My girl.
