"Ell." A soft breath whispers in my ear.
I hug the blankets tighter to my chest, not wanting to wake up.
"Ell." The voice comes again. "Ell, princess, it's time for me to leave."
I blink my eyes open to find my dark room now has the small soft glow of the lamp on my desk. I look up to see Dominic standing at the edge of the bed next to me, he's wearing a full suit and a serious face. "Dominic?" I whisper confused.
A sad smile tugs at his lips. "I won't bother your sleep for long. I just didn't want to leave for Boston without saying goodbye." He tells me softly.
"Boston? What time is it?" I ask sleepily.
"It's almost five." He tells me softly.
I sit up slowly in the bed, earning a small protest from Dominic which I of course ignore. I reach out and grab his face between my hands. "Just please be safe." I plead softly.
Dominic gives me a small nod. "I always am." He tells me firmly. "You'll be good for me while I'm gone?" He asks in a soft sultry voice.
"Yes, Sir." I say playfully.
Dominic chuckles and kisses my lips softly. "Good." He tells me. "Listen..." He trails off and he looks to be somewhat awkward now.
"What is it?" I ask him, urging him to continue.
Dominic pulls away from my touch and picks up something off my nightstand I hadn't noticed until now. He places a neatly folded pile of fabrics on the bed between us. "I know you sleep better, without those night terrors, when I'm here with you." He starts. "I don't want you getting them again while I'm gone. I hate the thought of you getting them." He confesses to me quietly. "I thought maybe if you had something to wear, that smelt like me... that it might help the same as if I was really here." He shakes his head. "It's stupid, just forget..."
"It's not stupid!" I cut him off quickly. "It's very considerate of you, thank you."
He gives me a small shrug. "It was the best I could come up with." He tells me sheepishly.
I raise my hand to graze his cheek. "Dominic, it's a very thoughtful and generous thing for you to do for me." I reassure him.
Dominic gives me a small nod. He clears his throat and stands up straight again. "I have to get going." He says glancing down at his gold watch.
I nod. "Be safe." Tell him again.
"You too, princess." One of his hands cups my chin as he dips down and plants a firm kiss on my lips. His lips then firmly pressed to my forehead. "Go back to sleep now, I'll text you later on to stay in touch." He tells me.
I nod. I lay back down on my bed and watch as Dominic walks over to my desk to turn off my lamp before my eyes follow his shadowed figure from the room. Once the door clicks closed I pull his pile of shirts to my chest, hugging them to me as I felt the ache of the loss of his presence. I sat up a minute later, pulling off my own shirt before swapping it for one of Dominic's cotton t-shirts.
I fell back to sleep enveloped with his scent, though without his burning warmth I found myself feeling cold without him.
Max and I were sitting in the living area of the apartment for most of the day, I had insisted that he move into another room for at least a few hours so that he wasn't just stuck sitting on the same sofa that he's been sleeping on.
A nurse had come by around 8 am this morning to check Max's wounds, change his dressings, and apparently gave him a sponge bath in a bathroom I hadn't even known was on the first floor of the apartment. Max had thoroughly enjoyed his bath with the nurse, I sat in the living area while it went down and I could hear him flirting with the young blonde nurse from out there.
For brunch I made Max and myself poached eggs and crispy bacon on hashbrowns, Max also had baked beans with his but I can't stand them. Of course a large pot of tea was made to share between us.
Max and I had been binge watching Friends, one of my favourites, from the beginning.
"Did Dom say something to you?" Max asks randomly, but one look at his face and I can see he's bringing up a subject that's been playing on his mind for a while.
I swallow harshly and feel a flush rising to my cheeks. "What... what do you mean?" I stutter out nervously.
"Dom leaves to handle business to do with me and all of a sudden you're a homebody. I know you've been wanting to get out and explore the city more." Max explains.
"I'm normally a homebody." I defend myself. It's true, I do prefer to stay in more than I prefer to go out. I feel safer and more comfortable when I stay in. Though Max is correct, I had been wanting to explore this new city some more.
Max cocks an eyebrow at me. "Ellie." He gives me a soft warning tone.
I nod. "He came to talk to me yesterday afternoon. Said you might feel better about things if I stayed home with you since he was taking some of his 'most trusted' men with him on this 'business' trip." I give Max as little detail as I could about the conversation I'd had with Dominic, and it wasn't fully a lie. Though Dominic had said he'd be the one feeling better about my safety if I stayed with Max, I knew Max would have felt the same way. "Besides, I need to nurse you back to health since you're my tour guide and all." I laugh lightly, trying to get the conversation away from Dominic.
Max's phone started buzzing on the sofa next to him, he glanced down at it and an irritated look crossed his face briefly before he hit the ignore button on the call. He let out a deep sigh and turned his attention back to the plasma.
"Ok, who was that?" I snapped finally. "That's the third call today you've gotten and each time you don't pick it up. You've been doing that for days now." I state my observations.
Max glances at me shocked, as if he somehow couldn't believe I had noticed or was even mentioning this to him. "It's no one. Just someone who can't take the hint apparently."
I raise an eyebrow at him. "Oh my, it's some girl that you're ghosting isn't it?" I say with a mock surprised tone. I know Max doesn't like to date, he doesn't even like seeing the same girl more than a couple times.
Max laughs loudly. "Firstly, if a chick was acting this crazy, you best believe I would be ghosting her. Secondly, it's actually not a chick I'm dodging just some wanker." Is voice on his second point is firm making it clear that was to be the end of this conversation.
I shrug it off, allowing the conversation to drop, but my curiosity is blooming. It's not like Max to ignore someone like this. I've always known him to be a kind person who would answer even the most irritating person's calls, but then again this might be someone he knows from his work so maybe it is someone he doesn't want to give the time of day to because they're bad.
