CHAPTER FORTY SIX: JUST US

+++

Noah's P.O.V

"Daddy! Daddy! Daddy! You're here!"

Both Aria and Xavier squealed as soon as they saw me approach them. I crouched down with my arms wide open, a wide smile plastered on my face. The twins didn't hesitate to run up to me, happy laughter leaving their lips.

They collided into me, the action almost tipping me over due to the double weight. I steadily kept my balance and hugged them back tightly, missing their presence massively. They both had their arms over my neck and I use that as a guide to lift them off the ground.

Once I was standing the twins pulled away from my neck and smiled even wider, their eyes glistering in pure happiness. A few parents looked our way, 'awes' and 'coos' heard from them. Aria leaned forward and pecked me on my check, Xavier doing the same on the other side.

Xavier then leaned back and spoke enthusiastically,

"Daddy you have to meet Miss Quinn!"

"Yeah daddy! She's our teacher! Look she's there!"

Aria spoke as she pointed at a teacher who was stood by the school doors. She was roughly the same height like Lily's with a boxed face, black rimmed glasses propped on her blonde hair. She flashed me a smile, me returning one back. I then approached her, the teacher first to speak,

"You must be Xavier's and Aria's father. It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Amber Quinn, their teacher,"

I nodded a few times, making a mental note at their teachers name. It was my turn to speak,

"It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Noah King,"

Her eyes widened a little, clearly knowing my name. She chuckled and said,

"No wonder you looked familiar. Well regardless of who you are, it's a pleasure to be teaching your kids. They're such a wonder to work with,"

At her statement, my eyebrows perked up,

"Really,"

She gave me an impressed look, boosting the twins confidence,

"Aria and Xavier are the most unique pair of twins I've come across let alone taught. I've never seen such a strong bond like theirs. They both rely on each other as well as work and move independently. It's fascinating and an honor to have them in my class,"

She paused for a second before continuing,

"You could ask any staff here at the school. They're all in love with them. Their ridiculously polite and have a great imagination. Their classmates look up to them like role models and I'm not joking,"

I looked at both the twins as they now had rosy pink cheeks. I spoke them both,

"Is that true guys?"

Aria cutely covered her face and buried her face in the crook of my neck. I chuckled deeply at her actions, Amber swooning at the sight of her. She then gave her attention to Xavier and stated,

"if you told someone random that Xavier was four nobody would believe you. He is such a sweetheart. He is beyond smart and talented. I don't know if Lily told you but a couple of weeks ago we had a session on who we looked like, our mummy or daddy,"

She faced towards the school building and walked in, me talking lead naturally. She continued,

"Aria grew Lily. You know same brown hair and brown eyes. Xavier on the other hand took both me and Lily by surprise,"

I felt my heart quicken,

"He shocked us both by drawing you. He draw a person with black hair and deep green eyes to match his emerald ones. When Lily saw it she was lost for words,"

We all walked into the classroom, most probably the twins. Amber walked to the back of the class and opened the draw, pulling out two pieces of paper. She walked back to us and presented it to me since I was unable to do so myself.

Even though Amber had told me what Xavier drew, it still blew my mind seeing it person. It was so perfect. So precise even though not much had been drawn. I blinked my gaze at Xavier who watched me with a biting nail. I give him a shocked expression, speaking in a gasp,

"Buddy you drew this?!"

He nodded shyly,

"Do you like it daddy?"

I made weird noises before answering,

"Buddy like it? I absolutely love it!"

He smiled shyly, a growing blush expressed on his cheeks,

"Miss Quinn wasn't lying about you being smart buddy. You're the smartest boy I know!"

At my compliment he did what Aria did, bury his face in the crook of my neck. I moved my head a little and kissed his face, hearing him giggle ever so quietly. Then Aria lifted her head up, brushed her hair away and whined,

"What about my picture daddy? Do you like mine too?"

I gasped playfully and commented,

"Of course I do! You drew mummy perfectly! She looks beautiful just like you! No wonder you're mummy's girl! You look just like her,"

"Like... like how Xavy looks like you,"

I nodded, agreeing with her statement,

"Exactly,"

"Daddy..."

Xavier trailed. I hummed at him calling my name, taking a left turn around the corner,

"Why didn't mummy come pick us up?"

I came to a stop a red light,

"Mummy's working bud,"

"Working? Where daddy?"

I drummed the pads of my fingers on the steering wheel, waiting for the countdown to finish,

"Remember how mummy said she wanted to work again?"

I looked at the rear-mirror, seeing him pout in thought. Before he could say something, Aria made her voice known,

"I do daddy! It was when we came back from grandmas,"

I nodded,

"That's right princess. Mummy used to work for daddy right?"

Both twins nodded, listening attentively,

"Well mummy wanted to work at daddy's office and she is,"

"Really?"

I hummed in response. The car fell silent before Xavier questioned,

"Will mummy be working like this forever?"

I shook my head,

"No bud. Mummy and daddy will take turns. Some days mummy will pick you up and some days I will,"

We approached another red light and I took the chance to read Xavier's attention. I bit my lip before speaking,

"That way we can have some time together before mummy joins us,"

"Yaaaaay!"

Aria screamed at the top of her head. Xavier looked at Aria and kept on staying silent. It was like he was still trying to weigh the scale in his mind. It amazed me deeply knowing that he literally did pick up my trait. He was wearily until he weighed the pros and cons.

Eventually we reached home, the car coming to a stop. I switched the engine off, my eyes still on Xavier. He the looked at me through the rear-mirror and had a small growing smile. He looked down at his hands and played with his fingers. He parted his lips and spoke quietly,

"I like that,"

I licked the corner of my lip, feeling my heart swell at his words. I unbuckled my seat-belt and spun my body to see them both. Aria was swaying side-to-side, clearing dancing in her seat unable to hide her excitement.

Xavier looked up from his eyelashes and gave me a an innocent smile. I knew I heard him but I wanted him to say it louder so I teased him,

"I didn't hear you buddy, what did you?"

The trait of biting lips from Lily was picked up by him because he bit his lip. He then released his lips and spoke proudly, now waving his arms high in the air,

"I LIKE THAT DADDY!"

At his enthusiasm Aria joined in, screaming at the top of her head. I had to cover my ears, hearing Xavier now laugh. This was the Xavier that I loved. My one-of-a-kind son. I loved his serious personality as well as his childish four-year-old self.

It was something that I would cherish forever and always. I stepped out the car and moved to release them both. Like the four-year-olds they were they ran to the front door, jumping up and down. I shook my head, taking long strides up to them.

I found the right key and opened the door, placing their school bags to the side. The twins sat on the floor and took of their shoes and socks, becoming bare footed. I took my blazer off and hung it up on the peg, rolling up my sleeves and loosening my tie.

I walked over to the stairs and took a seat. I called over the twins since they wondered off. They came back to scene and fell into my embrace. I spoke to them excitedly,

"Guess what?"

I stood silent, trying to build the tension,

"What daddy?"

Xavier questioned back four seconds later. I sucked my lips in and ushered them closer. They leaned in and I whispered like it was the biggest secret yet,

"Can you hear that?"

They both had their eyebrows scrunched, listening as hard as they could for any movement. Aria met my eyes and spoke cutely,

"What am I meant to hear daddy?"

"I can't hear anything daddy,"

Xavier said after her. I shrugged my shoulders and simply said,

"That's right. You can't hear anything because it's just us three,"

"You mean it's just us daddy? No Benny and Lauren?"

I nodded at Xavier's statement,

"That's right bud. No Benny and Lauren. Just you, Ari and me,"

I paused for effect,

"... and guess what? We can do and go anything you want,"

I said with complete seriousness,

The twins both looked at each other and moved away, now jumping on the spot freely with their arms above their head. They screamed at the top of the voices, the excitement leaving the bodies physically as they ran around the hallway.

I took up and exhaled deeply. I then placed a hand on my hip and watched them run in and out of the living room. I felt my heart swell at the sight of them both, my excitement growing slowly. There was so much that I wanted to do with them but I couldn't think of what to do first.

When I made ways to work, it sunk in that I had them in my life forever. Nothing would come in-between us. Nothing will pull us apart. Even though I had endless things that I wanted to do with my children, I thought it was best to give my children what they wanted.

I wanted to know my children. I wanted to make up for the time that I missed, those precious milestones that they achieved as they grew. Now that they had made their presence in my life, I wasn't going to say. I was going to make my kids happy as well as the love of my life.

God was kind enough to give Lily back to me. Fix me by giving me the only thing that I wanted. Needed. It was like God was saying one thing over and over again: Don't fuck up. Use this one and only chance to reset all the wrong that you did.

I combed a hand through my hair and exhaled deeply. Nodding at the determination. I can't fuck up now. There were now children involved. My children. No stupid misunderstanding can come between us again. I can bet my whole fortune on it. I licked my lips and called out,

"Okay my gremlins for today you can pick one thing that you really want to do and we'll do it,"

They both froze and ran up to me. I got down to their level, meeting their unbelievable eyes,

"Really daddy?"

"Of course. It's officially you, Ari and daddy time. Whatever you want, we get to do it no matter what anyone says,"

"Even mummy?"

I gave a hell bent determined nod,

"Even mummy,"

They both gasped in sync, their shoulders squaring up a little. They parted their lips and screamed over each other on what they wanted,

"I WANT TO GO TO THE ZOO!"

"I WANT TO MAKE A SUPER DUPER CAKE!"
