I Hate You, Chloe

I slam the paper on the table in front of Jai. "Read the front page." I walk away from him.

I need to get out of this house.

I walk to my room and grab my handbag. I put it over my shoulder and walk out the door. I unlock the door to Jai's red Mazda mx5-2016 sports car. I climb in and put the key in the ignition. I pull out of the driveway and just drive.

When I look at where I'm going I see that I'm close to Santa Barbara Pier. I look for a parking spot and park my car.

Aleysa used to like coming here a lot. Her favourite ride was the Ferris Wheel.

I'm going to spend the day riding the Ferris Wheel.

At least I will be away from everything that's going to be happening at the house with the article in the paper about Jai's Proposal.

I lock the car and walk over to the Ferris Wheel. I line up and wait for my turn.

It's not crowded here today. It was a couple days ago when Aleysa passed away.

The guy looks at me. "Are you with anyone?"

I shake my head. "It's just me." I move to the seat and I sit.

The guy puts the bar over me. "Hold on tight, Miss." He takes a double look at me. "You're her aren't you?"

I frown. "Who?"

"The girl from the paper? The one that signed a Proposal with Jai Marshall."

"No, that's not me."

He ignores me and moves the ride up.

Damn it. He's going to let people know that I'm here. I was hoping to have a quiet day alone.

I look around at all the people below as the Ferris Wheel goes around. When I'm at the top the ride stops and I can see the beach.

It's beautiful from up here. Now, I know why my sister loves riding on this.

I look at the vacant spot next to me. "I wish you were here, Aleysa." I close my eyes and imagine that I'm next to my sister and it's like I can hear her tell me that she's here and that she's not going to leave my side.

Aleysa was an amazing girl. Her life was short lived, but I'm glad that I got to spend time with her.

I got the opportunity to know her. I just wished that I went to a school closer to home. My life could have been different if I stayed in Los Angeles instead of travelling to New York.

The email alert on my phone goes off and I look at the message.

Job

Dear Chloe

I heard about your sister and I would like to send my deepest apologies for your loss. However, the last time we spoke I told you that I could keep a position in my office available in Los Angeles. I was wondering if you still want the job?

From

Harry

Yes, I'd love to work for my old boss again. I miss the office environment.

I reply to the message.

Re: Job

I would love to take you up on the offer of working at your Los Angeles firm. Can I start in a months time? I have a few things that I need to sort out before I can work again.

- Chloe

I wait a couple of minutes before I get a response from Harry.

I will see you in a month. I will be there to personally greet you at the office. I'm looking forward to seeing you again Chloe.

- Harry

I'm looking forward to seeing him again. I hope Jai won't mind that I go back to the job that I liked.

When Aleysa first got sick I didn't want to cause any problems for the company I used to work for. I wouldn't have been right for me to cancel meetings, not showing up at all and calling in sick when my sister needed me. I needed to leave at a moments notice and working in an office wouldn't have been easy with looking after my sister.

I put my phone away and enjoy the rest of the ride.

When I get to the bottom I look at the guy. "I want to go again."

"You need to let other people have a go."

I shake my head. "No, you can give people the other cars. I'm spending the entire day riding this. Maybe, you can call the paparazzi and tell them that you've seen me.

A smile spreads across his face. "I don't need to. They're already here for you. A gold digger like you are always at the top of the food chain when it comes to them. They're going to ruin your life."

I know they are, but nothing can get as worse as losing my sister. I don't really care what happens to me, but if they're going to talk about my sister; that is something that they will regret.

As the Ferris Wheel goes around again I see a couple below me and they have cameras wrapped around their neck.

When they don't think that I'm watching they take a photo.

My phone goes off with a text message this time.

When the Ferris wheel is close to the ground I say to the guy. "You can let me off."

He pulls the bar over my head. "You're welcome," he yells at my retreating back.

I flip him off.

He deserves that for contacting the paparazzi. He can pretend all day that he didn't call them, but I know differently.

When I get to the bar I see vans and black cars parked in front of the house.

Someone yells. "That's Chloe Knight."

Everyone runs towards me and they start asking me questions, and taking photos of me.

I put my hands up to shield my face from the cameras.

I don't like all this attention.

Someone grabs my arm and I come face-to-face with the girl that I met the first night at Lusive. She has a grin on her face. "I win."

She's just here to provoke me. If I do anything in front of the paparazzi she can sue me and I don't want to deal with a law suit from some gold digging whore. Who should have gotten it through her head that Jai was never hers.

The front door opens and my brother walks through it. He grabs my arm and pulls me inside. He turns towards me and shows me his phone. "Is this true?"

"Yes,"

Nate throws his hands in the air. "I can't believe this Chloe. How could you use Jai for money?"

I look Nate in the eye. "I wasn't using him for money, well at first it was about the medical bills for Aleysa, but..." he cuts me off.

"I don't want to hear any of your lies. I hate you, Chloe." He walks out the door.

Why couldn't he just give me a chance to explain everything to me instead of acting like a kid?
