"Mom, have you seen my backpack?" I asked. I couldn't seem to find it anywhere. That wasn't entirely true; I didn't even look for it. I didn't really feel like looking for it.

"Mom-" the guest bedroom was open. I walked in. My mom was assembling a night table next to the guest bed. "What are you doing in here?" I asked. "I thought I should prepare this room." She dusted off her hands.

"Why?" I asked skeptically. She grinned. "In case we have guests." I raised an eyebrow. "Like who?" She began to assemble the dresser across the room. "I might have a guest who's staying overnight; you never know." She said. I hummed in response.

"Well, I have to go to school, do you know where-" she was still working on the dresser. "Your book bag is in the living room." I stared at the room longer than usual. "Thanks, mom!" She yelled, "love you, sweetie," before I left the house.

Cooper was waiting outside, "Coop, can I ask you a question?" He grinned. "Quinn, if you're going to ask me out, I'm gonna have to decline. I'm hot," he looked me up and down like he was examining me. "You're okay but, I just like the friendship we have." I rolled my eyes.

"Cooper, I'm serious!" I whined, he kept driving. "Right, ask away." I twiddled my thumbs. "Does it mean anything if my mom is preparing the guest room?" He laughed at me, which isn't what I was expecting. "Cooper, answer the question." He bought it for a second.

"Quinn, you're paranoid." I argued, "I am not!" He chuckled, turning into the school's parking lot. "What if she's found-" he turned off the ignition. "Another man?" I nodded. "Or, she's just finishing the guest room because she simply wants to." I rolled my eyes. I would never know, but I hoped my mom fixed the guest room for herself and not a man. I don't know if I'd be able to handle that right about now.

I was in English, bored out of my mind. Ms. Peña was late, causing the class to chat with each other. There was an empty seat next to me. I was hoping no one would sit there. I just honestly wanted to be alone.

I was starting to think I was cursed, or Andre came late to class just to sit next to me. "I hear you and Cooper are best friends again." I narrowed my eyes at him. "You hear a lot of things." He nodded, "I'm a good listener."

"No, you're just nosy." He shot back, "and you're naive." I was taken back. "Excuse me?" He chuckled at my reaction. "Quinn, stop pretending like you know Cooper."

"I do know, Cooper." He smiled like he already won his argument. "It's been nine years; people change." I've had time to get to know Cooper again. Yes, people change, but Cooper hasn't changed much. "And, Cooper's definitely not the person he use to be." I scoffed, "I don't trust you at all. You can keep spewing lies but, I do know Cooper." He shook his head in pity. "Quinn, poor, naive Quinn. You are bound to get hurt with an attitude like that." And just like that, I was for what felt like the hundredth time left in a state of confusion. Everyone around here seemed to have their own problems and secrets, and it was confusing, very confusing.
