Chapter Six

I stared at the tarmac watching a large trailer bus pull up to the plane once it finally came to a stop, followed by three of the same vans that Mason had used to drive us to the first airport.

Moving my head back and forth looking out of my window I had one final moment of doubt, my heart was racing and could feel my hands shaking as they rested in my lap.

More women began coming out of the trailer bus, the drivers of the vans also getting out walking towards the plane and my mini panic continued until I saw a man. Blonde hair, sticking out of a white maybe grey beanie it was hard to tell without much sunlight. He looked familiar but I couldn’t be 100% sure; my eyes focused on this man while the aircraft door was being opened and the steps were being lowered.

I saw Abby walking towards me and as other women entered the plane I saw them all glance around looking at me, then eyes darting to Kayla, Bailey, Michael, Sarah, Lily, Hannah who were asleep on one side and then to Keith, Cole, Michelle and Nicole.

I looked at their faces, reading what I saw as they took us in, watching as their eyes zeroed in on things that I had not even given a second thought all this time. We were dirty, our clothes were practically rags with bloodstains, new and old, faces dirty with tear tracks. Even though the kids were semi covered by blankets as they slept, their arms as well as mine were laced with angry, jagged scars.

The five women all came slowly towards me joining Abby as Mason and the other men left carrying the information Mason had retrieved from the house.

As they stepped closer cautiously I realized they did not look at me with pity. I quickly glanced out of my window still looking at the man in the beanie, my eyes brimming with tears just ready to fall and I felt like I just couldn’t get a solid deep breathe in. I looked back to Abby “Abby, is-s that, is t-that p-person in the b-beanie… i-is that L-L-Logan?” I struggled to get the words out.

“Yes,” someone answered not sure if it was Abby because my attention was on the beanie guy who was staring at the plane like the Queen was about to walk off.  Flexing on the balls of his feet, almost as if he needed to use the restroom.  As I blinked -my tears overflowed- I realized that I was also wearing a smile.

I turned to look at the women standing next to Abby and they began to introduce themselves quickly

“Olivia, but you can call me Olive.”

“Emma.”

“Natalie.”

“Zoey.”

“Charlotte, but you can call me Charlie.”

As they finished I looked at them each directly in the eyes because I needed to express and make them realized just how thankful I was “Thank you all so, so much. Thank you.”

They all just nodded at me and asked permission to carry my sleeping children to the trailer bus. Abby quietly said just as a warning that they had injuries so to be careful not to jostle them too much.

She turned to me and offered me help to stand and then before I knew it she was carrying me as the other women were carrying my children. As I tried to tell her I could walk she shushed me, telling me she couldn’t heal my ribs completely, my ankle was still a bit swollen but in better condition. Trying to lighten up this tensed situation where emotions were all running insanely high Abby said “also It’s not like I’m offering to walk home and carry you the whole way. It’s just to the bus.” Flashing me a big smile.

As Abby followed the women out of the aircraft door, down the stairs I found myself staring at Logan again, him looking at each of my children being carried past him into the trailer. His face contorted, clear signs of disappointment, shock and sadness then as if he knew that my eyes were on him, his flicked up to mine.

Relief.

Sadness.

Anger.

Love.

Apologetic.
