Chapter 39

"We shouldn't be doing this." I grumbled as I followed an over enthusiastic Jax across the street.

"Chill out bae, we can leave campus during lunch and free periods right?"

       "Yeah, but-"

"Then stop being such a worry wart! I want a burger from Suzie's, and we're getting one. End of story."

       "But Rex-"

"Is still going to be in detention for the next four days. He won't even care."

"Yes he will." I groaned but reluctantly followed the buff jock into Suzie's diner. The other boys weren't even with us. Jax wanted to go on a "lunch date" and didn't bother telling the Big Four before dragging me out of the school. I had no doubt they would end up telling Rex.

"It's not like you're going alone Rose. Stop worrying so much."

I frowned as we took a seat in the nearest booth to the door, one right against the large glass window. "I don't like not telling him when I go somewhere without him."

Jax rolled his eyes and gestured the waitress over with a nod. "Then don't tell him. Problem solved."

I narrowed my eyes at him as the waitress came over and asked what we wanted to drink. "I don't keep things from him anymore. That only creates trouble between us."

His bright blue eyes softened and his lips curled up at the corner. "I know, I was just kidding. Besides, I'm sure once the others realize we're not there for lunch he'll find out anyway."

I groaned as the waitress came back and set our drinks down. He was absolutely right, and Rex would be so pissed when he found out. He didn't like me going anywhere without him, especially with everything that had been going on. I'll just text him-

"Miss? Do you want to order?"

I nearly jumped at the unexpected voice and pair of dark brown eyes that gazed down at me with an eyebrow raised. "Uh I'll just get whatever he's getting." I mumbled and dropped my attention back to my backpack where I had started searching urgently for my phone.

She turned her attention to a smirking Jax, who didn't hide the fact that he was blatantly checking her out. I rolled my eyes as I pulled my phone out of the front pocket of my bag.

Me (11:30 am): Jax and I went to Suzie's for lunch. I'll text you when we get back :D

"Get off your phone Rose. We're on a date, that's rude."

"Shut up. I'm texting Rex." I grumbled as he started flicking pieces of his straw's wrapper at me.

"The detention teach' took all of their phones. He doesn't even have his."

       "That's not the point."

"Just give me attention, Rosie-e-e-e." He prolonged the end of my name and leaned over the booth far enough to poke me in the cheek until I glanced up at him.

"You get enough attention from Denton and Brett, you dork." I shoved my phone back into my bag as he leaned back into the booth and crossed his arms over his chest with a scoff.

"Brett hates me, and they've both been busy with football."

That caught my attention real fast. I frowned and leaned my arms against the table as his bright eyes flickered out to the people sitting around us.

"That's not true Jax. Why do you think he hates you?"

He rolled his eyes and ran a hand through his already disheveled hair. "He thinks I'm trying to turn his brother gay."

I chocked on the water I had just sipped into my mouth and tried not to spew it all over the table. Jax frowned and reached across the space between us to pat my back as I coughed violently. "H-he what?" I spluttered when air finally reached my lungs again.

"He thinks I'm trying to turn Denton gay, or bi at least-"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold up." I held my hand up and shook my head as he gazed curiously down at me.

"It's not that hard to figure out Rose. I'm bi, Denton isn't, we spend a lot of time together, so Brett assumes I want in his twin's pants-"

"Okay stop Jax, just stop." I groaned and rubbed my fists into my eyes as he let out a heavy sigh. "I'm sure if you just talk to Brett about it you'll see that's not true-"

"I did talk to him about it. He was the one who approached me all awkwardly about it too." He scoffed and crossed his arms again as his bright eyes followed the waitresses passing out food to different tables.

"What do you mean by awkwardly?"

His eyes snapped back over to mine and watched as I took another careful sip of water. "We were at Echo the other day and he came up to me out of the blue, and straight up asked if I was into Denton and if I was trying to make him into me."

       "Well are you?"

He let out a bark of laughter and leaned his arms against the table as our waitress came into view with our food. "Of course not. Denton is too much like me. I could not fuck, much less date, someone exactly like me." He leaned back with a chuckle as the waitress set our burgers down in front of us.

I frowned over at the deranged boy sitting only a few feet from me. "Then why would Brett think you are?" I asked softly as I picked up some fries to start munching on.

He shrugged one shoulder and dug right into his over flowing burger, the grease slowly dripping down his chin. I cringed at the sight. God, he was so messy. "Maybe cause' I lay the flirt on thick."

       "Jax!"

"I can't help it Rosie. I'm just a flirtatious person!"

I groaned as he went back to stuffing his face. "This is just perfect." I'll just have to talk to Brett about it. Make him understand Jax is just flirty with everyone, and despite what Rex believes, he doesn't want to get into everyone's pants.

My phone started vibrating in my bag and I frowned as I fished it out of my pocket. Rex is usually the only one who calls me, but he shouldn't have his phone right now...

I gulped as his name flashed in bold letters across the rather large screen, a picture I snuck of him passed out in bed appeared below his number. "Hey-" I barely got the word out before his powerful voice overrode mine.

       "Come back now."

       "But-"

"Now Rosalyn, or I'll come and drag you back."

I let out a heavy sigh and glanced over at a smirking Jax who had one eyebrow raised. "How do you even have your phone?" I grumbled as I threw some cash on the table for my half of the bill and tip.

       "Doesn't matter. Just get here."

"Don't be cranky." I mumbled as I slung my bag over my shoulder with a now frowning Jax doing the same.

"You left school in the middle of the day without me, without telling me, and with Jax. I think I have a right to be a little cranky."

       "I did tell you..."

I narrowed my eyes at the buff blonde in front of me as he grabbed my money off the table and replaced it with his own. I stuck my tongue out at him as he shoved my money into the front zipper of my bag.

"A fucking text message is not the same thing."

"Shouldn't you be in detention or something?" I grumbled as we stepped out of the diner and back across the street. Jax brought his burger along and ate the last half in two big bites.

"Shouldn't you be in the cafeteria?" His voice was a dark growl, but despite the dangerous angry tone lingering there, I loved the sound of it.

       "Touché."

"This isn't funny Rosalyn. I'm pissed."

My small smile turned into a frown and my shoulders slumped as we made our way back onto the school's grounds. "I know, I know. I'm sorry. We're back though."

"Where?" His tone was a hard demand and I sighed as we walked through the school's entrance.

       "The front entrance."

"Trey's on his way. Don't move."

He hung up without another word and I let out a low groan as Jax slumped against the door frame. "Lover boy pissed off?"

"Yes, I told you he would be." I grumbled quietly as he tossed the to-go wrapper in the trash can next to him.

Jax let out a heavy sigh and looked out across the hall way with a gaze that appeared almost remorseful. Good, the jerk should feel bad about making Rex mad at me-

"I told you we shouldn't have gone Rosie, but you insisted on leaving to get a burger-"

I gasped and punched him in the shoulder as hard as I could. It was like bunching a boulder. "You jerk! You're the one who dragged me out of the school! I told you I didn't want to go!"

"Doesn't matter. You're still gonna be in trouble." I jumped slightly as a grumpy toned Trey came around the corner, a disappointed glint lighting his eyes. It made me frown.

"I'm sorry?" I mumbled up at him as he came to a stop in front of us, the two Dimajios following closely behind. Jax stayed quiet behind us.

"You should have at least came and told us you were leaving. We were worried sick about you." He grumbled and let out a heavy sigh before he shoved his hands into his jacket pockets. His words only made my frown grow, and didn't help the guilt weighing down on my shoulders.

"You're right. I'm sorry, but at least I texted him."

Trey rolled his eyes. "I went and told him you weren't at lunch Princess. The only reason he even had his phone was because I made some bull shit excuse to the detention teach to let him out for a few minutes."

I dropped my eyes back to our feet and shuffled uneasily. "Is he really that mad?" I mumbled softly as the ginormous Dimajios came to a stop behind the mountain that was Trey. I could feel Jax fidget uneasily behind me. He wasn't used to not doing anything whenever I was in trouble, for lack of a better word, but he understood this wasn't a situation he could fix.

That stupid turd was the reason I was in it in the first place.

       Freaking jerk.

       "More than mad."

I groaned and rubbed my fists into my eyes as Treys bright green orbs stared down at me accusingly. "Were not allowed to leave you till he gets out at the end of the day." Brett grumbled from beside me.

"But we all have different classes."

"You have to wait for one of us to show up at the end of each one." Trey grumbled as those accusatory eyes continued to glare holes down at me. I couldn't bring myself to look up at him.

"That's a little over done. Don't you think?" Jax finally piped up from behind me. Brett angled his body slightly away from the bluff blonde, and the conversation from mere minutes ago flashed through my mind. Did he seriously think Jax was trying to turn Denton gay?

"Not for Rex." I mumbled softly as Trey gestured towards the bag on my shoulder. I handed it over to him.

"Let's get you to class. I don't need Rex up at my ass anymore than he already is." Trey turned on his heel with a grumble and I reluctantly began to follow after him. I felt like a scolded child waiting for my punishment. As much as I loved him, I was dreading having to face Rex after school.

The car ride after school was silent. Rex's hands were like iron fists on the steering wheel and his sunglass-covered eyes never left the road. I sat there awkwardly for what felt like hours before the tension between us just became too much.

"I don't understand why you're so mad." I mumbled softly into the deafening silence surrounding us. His eyes slanted over towards me before he drew them back to the road.

       "You know why I'm mad."

       "Not really."

"You left campus without telling me. You left without me. How can you possibly expect me to be happy about that?"

"But it was only across the street-"

"That's not the point Rosalyn!" I flinched as my full name left his angry lips, and felt a slight shudder of fear as he slammed on the breaks and pulled the car over to the side of the road. At least we weren't on the highway.

I twirled my thumbs nervously as he ran his hand through his already beautifully disheveled hair. He let out a heavy sigh and rested his head in his hand that was propped against the window, his eyes gazing out at the rather empty street in front of us. My heart broke at the sight.

"What if they were out there, Rose? Outside the school waiting for you to just waltz out on your own."

I frowned at his words, but not because they were wrong. He was one hundred percent right. I should have been more careful, but it wasn't like I was completely alone. "Jax was with me. It wasn't like I was alone." He scoffed and pushed his sunglasses up to the top of his head.

       "Something still could have happened."

"And something could always happen Rex. Even with you."

"But at least you're with me."

I gazed over at him softly as those dark chestnut eyes refused to look at me. "I wouldn't let anything happen to you Roza." His voice was a dark mutter as his heavy hand tapped on the steering wheeling anxiously.

"And you think Jax would let something bad happen to me?" He stayed silent for a moment before his hand left the steering wheel to wrap around my own. I eagerly gripped both of mine around his.

"Not on purpose, but he doesn't have this... this need to protect you that I do."

My heart fluttered at his words, but I found myself frowning as he rubbed his free hand over his eyes. "Jax can keep me safe T'. He has before."

"This isn't before Rosalyn. This is now, and you're mine, and I just-" His grip on my hand tightened and he let out another heavy sigh. "Just don't do something like that again, okay?" He squeezed my hand one more time before letting go to put the car back into drive.

"Okay Rex." I mumbled miserably as he pulled back onto the street.

"Do you mind if we go to the gym for a while? I need to get some practice time in." He asked as he pulled onto the highway, his dark sunglasses once again resting over his beautiful eyes.

       "Sure."

There was still this thin layer of tension ringing between us and it made me shift uneasily in my seat. I hated feeling so awkward around him, and knowing that it was my fault only made it worse. I told Jax going was a bad idea. Freaking jerk.

We pulled into the parking lot shortly after, and Rex didn't bother waiting for me to unbuckle my seatbelt before he was turning off the engine and hopping out. The action made me frown.

"Rex wait!" He was already halfway towards the entrance of the gym by the time I had closed the car door behind me, his gym bag slung firmly over his shoulder. I watched as he slowly stopped and let his shoulders drop with a ragged sigh. I had to basically run to catch up with him.

My frown only grew as I pulled to a stop in front of him, his dark eyes looking anywhere but at me. My heart dropped uneasily to my stomach. "Don't be like this." I whispered softly as his grip on the bag tightened. I anxiously wrapped my fingers into the open lapels of his jacket. I wasn't going anywhere until this tension between us was gone.

He remained silent, his gaze looking anywhere but at me. It made me want to curl up in the car and never come out. "Rex I love you." His dark eyes snapped down to me and I gripped his jacket tighter as his jaw clenched. "You know that." I searched his face worriedly, looking for any kind of sign that would give away what he was thinking, but he had always been good when it came to hiding his emotions.

"I do know that, Roza. Which blows my mind when you continuously don't listen to me."

"I do listen to you. It was a onetime thing. I didn't even want to leave. I swear I won't go anywhere without you anymore."

He glanced away again and gritted that amazingly beautiful jaw of his. "Something bad could have happened-"

       "But nothing did."

He let out a short huff of air and rolled his head on his shoulders before those dark chestnut eyes finally landed on mine. "Not again Rose."

I shook my head almost viciously and shot him a wide smile. "Not again T'. I promise." The corner of his lips lifted just the slightest in an adorable little smirk, before he suddenly squished them against mine in a kiss I had been craving all day.

"I love you too." He whispered softly when he pulled away shortly after. I pouted but he just sent me a quiet chuckle and pecked my lips one more time. I'll never be able to get used to this.

"Enough PDA you two. Rex has a lot of time to make up for."

I jumped as Trey's voice reached us from a few parking spots down and I blushed like a tomato as Rex shot him glare. "Fuck off." He snapped at his best friend before tucking me into his side with his free arm and heading towards the gym entrance once again. I heard Trey laugh from behind us before following shortly after.

"Wanna go a round, baby?" Rex asked a short ten minutes later.

I glanced up from my laptop and smiled at a shirtless, sweaty, and slightly out of breath Rex. He was leaning over the thick ropes of the ring, his hands still covered in those giant red gloves. "Um, no thanks. I'm good." I shot him a wide smile as his beautiful dark eyes narrowed.

"You're never going to get better at fighting Rose unless you actually practice."

"I get better every time I watch you. So, it all works out." I shot him a-thumbs up as Trey chuckled beside me.

"You're not even watching me." I heard him grumble under his breath before he tore himself away from the ropes and headed back towards his trainer in the middle of the ring. I frowned as they started fighting again.

"You're not giving needy-boy enough attention, Princess." Trey shot me a smug smile, but my frown only turned into a pout.

"I have to finish this paper for history, otherwise I would watch him." I grumbled as Trey shook gently with laughter beside me.

       "I can't handle you two
