Kayla

I stood in the door waiting for April to come and pick me up. She was taking me up to the shop with her to teach me how to make wigs. I'm just happy to be getting out of this damn house! I feel like damn prisoner sometimes.

April's truck finally pulled into the driveway. "Bye ma, I'm leaving!" I rushed out quickly so she couldn't start up a pointless conversation. I ran over to the car and hoped inside. "Hey April."

She chuckled. "Hey, you okay?"

I nodded. "Just happy to be out the house."

"Oh okay." She pulled out the driveway and headed to her shop.

"Where's my brother? I thought you two rode together."

"He had an early appointment so he's already there."

"I haven't heard from him since that crazy dinner we had, he usually checks up on me everyday or every other day."

"Yeah he's been staying to himself lately, I understand why though."

"Me and my brother have been through a lot growing up. When he's sad or hurt he really doesn't know how to express his feelings. He used to lash out on people but instead of doing that now he just stays to himself. My step dad really scarred us."

"Kayla you don't have to explain, I understand. Trust me."

"Okay."

For the rest of the ride I focused on my phone. I was excited to see what she was going to teach me. We finally pulled into the strip where her shop was and I got even more excited. She parked and I helped her with her things and we went inside.

"Hey boo, I thought you were off today." Some guy with a bomb weave said to April.

"I was but I decided to come make a few wigs."

"And who is this cutie behind you?" He pointed to me.

"This is Keith's sister, Kayla. Kayla this is Dion one of my best friends and a stylist here."

I waved. "I love your hair." I told him.

"Thank you girl." He smiled then walked away.

"Okay, so this is my station. I have everything you're going to need to make your wig. Caps, needles, all that. I'm going to go grab the hair, I'll be right back." April said before disappearing.

I sat in the chair and started playing on my phone.

"Kayla."

I glanced up at my brother standing in front of me.

"Well hello stranger." I smirked.

"Hey, what you doing here?"

"April is teaching me how to make a wig, she didn't tell you?"

"She might have, my mind been all over the place. You been alright?"

"Yeah, just missing my big brother. I don't appreciate you ignoring my calls and texts."

"I've been busy Kayla, it wasn't intentionally so don't even trip."

"You sure it wasn't because of what happened at dinner?"

"Don't even bring that up. I said I've been busy and that's that." He snapped. That just proved to me what the real reason was and like always I'm right.

April finally came back.

"Hey baby." Keith pulled her into his arms. He tried to kiss her lips but she turned her head, so it landed on her cheek. "What's that about?"

"You know, we'll talk." She responded.

"Whatever, my client should be here soon." Keith headed to the back.

"Uh oh, trouble in paradise?" I frowned.

"You're brothers attitude lately hasn't been the best. It's either he's ignoring me or he's being a jerk."

"Well join the club."

"Alright, let's get started on this wig."

April told me everything that I had to do, then she started showing me how to start sewing and this girl is amazing at what she does. Not only was the threading so nice she was moving so quickly. I see how she gets so many of these done in one day.

"Have you ever thought about just selling wigs and hair and not doing hair anymore?" I asked.

"When things get out of control it crosses my mind, but I love doing hair. Being alone and just making a wig can get boring and lonely. I like interacting with my clients."

"You're amazing at this, just to let you know."

"Thank you. All it takes is patience and practice."

We went back to working on the wig when a guy walked up to her.

"April, I gotta go pick up Ro from school early. She throwing up all over the damn place." He said.

"Okay. Kayla this is my big brother Chris. This is who your brother works for. Chris this is Keith's sister Kayla."

That man was fine as hell! Covered in tattoos, those sharp cheekbones.

"Hi." I pierced my teeth into my bottom lip.

"Wassup." He smiled and my knees went weak. "Let me get out of here, I'll call you April, nice meeting you Kayla." His hand patted my shoulder as he walked past. I watched as he walked away.

"He's married and old Kayla." April laughed bringing my attention back to her.

"Was I that obvious?"

"Yes you were."

"I'm sorry but your brother is fine."

"Yours is too, that's something else we got in common." She nudged me. "But leave yours at a little crush."

I can't make no promises.

After finishing up my first wig, we styled it and she showed me a few other things. My mom started texting me about being home for dinner so I had to wrap up our lesson. I did not want to leave.

While April cleaned up, I decided to mess with Keith before I went home. He was sitting in his chair on his phone. I guess he wasn't that busy today.

I plopped down in the seat next to him. "So how much money did you make us today?"

He looked at me like I was crazy. "I didn't make YOU nothing."

"You're so mean and you need to stop doing April so bold. She didn't do anything to you, your issue is with mommy."

"Kayla, just stop for real."

"I'm serious Keith, you giving her the cold shoulder isn't cool."

"Kayla, do me a favor and stay out of grown folks business."

"Your girlfriend came to me with her problems so you can relax. You're so damn feisty."

Keith looked at me clinched his jaw.

"I think you and mom should go to counseling." I suggested.

"And I think you should go back to the front."

Before I could say anything else April's brother came back there. "You're in my seat lil mama." He said tapping my thigh.

Ugh this man gives me butterflies. I stood up. "I have to get going anyway. I'll see you later Keith, you too Chris."

As I walked out the room, I grabbed one of Chris's business cards.

"You ready Kayla?" I asked.

"Yes let's go." I grabbed my bag, told everyone goodbye then left out.

"So did you enjoy yourself?" April asked.

"Yeah! I can't wait to graduate and start working here. Just a couple more months."

"You're going to love it. We always have fun."

"I'm ready."

The rest of the car ride was quiet. We finally pulled up to my house.

"My next free day, I'll teach you how to do a perfect lace front." April said.

"Okay cool." I smiled.

"Tell your mom I said hello."

"I will, bye April."

"Bye Kayla." I climbed out the car and headed inside. "Maaaaa!"

She never answered. I went to check where the keys were and hers were gone, she probably went to the grocery store. I headed upstairs and laid across my bed.

Then I remembered Chris's flyer in my purse. I pulled it out and glanced over it.

At the bottom he had his contact info. I smiled and grabbed my phone to save his number.

This should be fun.

April

I sat up on the counter in my kitchen, texting on my phone while my chicken fried. The last thing I wanted to do was come on and cook but I'm so tired of takeout.

So I went to the store after I dropped off Kayla and grabbed some stuff.

As I was texting Jazz, I heard my front door open and slam close. Rolling my eyes, I just went back to focusing on my phone.

Keith came into the kitchen and tossed his keys on the counter. I kind of wanted him to be at his house today. His attitude is the LAST thing that I want to deal with tonight.

"Well hello to you too." I said.

He didn't say anything, just went over to the stove to see what all I cooked.

"If you're going to be an asshole, you can most definitely go home." I stated.

"So you going to my 17 year old sister for relationship advice now?" He said.

"What?"

"Why do she need to know what's going on in our relationship?"

"First of all she doesn't."

"She does. I try to kiss you and you turn your head right in front of her and you must've said something to her after I left because she felt like she could come telling me what the fuck I need to do. That shit ain't cool April." He got in front of me.

"I'm a grown ass woman, what I look like taking advice from a kid. I didn't ask her to do that, she took that upon herself. She asked me what was wrong and I told her."

"You should've told her everything is good."

"Then I'd be lying. Ever since we had dinner with your mom, your attitude has been awful and sick of it Keith. Your issue is with her, not me. You wanna give me the cold shoulder one minute then the next you're all on my face, I'm not with that bipolar bullshit. You need to get it together for real." I moved him out my way and went over to the food. "Oh and since your little sister is giving you advice on my behalf, here's some you should give her. Don't flirt with married men or men that's 10 plus years older than her."

"Excuse me?"

"She sat in front of me and flirted with Chris."

"My sister would never do no shit like that, she know that's a grown ass man."

"Well obviously she doesn't give a fuck. I know what the hell I saw. Tell her don't try nothing crazy with my brother."

"You sound crazy, don't ever come at my sister like that."

"Whatever Keith."

"You tripping." He grabbed a piece of chicken that was already cooked. "I'm going to bed."

Keith walked out the kitchen and headed upstairs.

I'm getting that feeling that some shit is about to pop off.
