I woke up in the middle of the night twisting and turning violently. I was sweating profusely and trembling from the terrible nightmare I just had. I knew it was brought on by the prospect of going home to my stepfather.

The nightmare was so horrific, vivid and real. I was back home and my stepfather was his usual self. Drunk and angry. I shivered and pulled my blanket up to my chin as I recalled the look in his eyes as he did his worst to me. I felt tears stream down my face as flashes of the dream came back to me. Even though I have woken up, it was like I was still half asleep, because the dream was still in my mind. I couldn't stop thinking about what took place.

I heard the room door being opened slowly and my eyes shifted to the door. Still in a daze from my dream, I didn't remember where I was. I shrunk back on the bed and shake my head in fear. "Pl-please, please d-don't h-hurt me." I tried to get out as my voice shook.

"Kayla?" I heard a soft voice say, but my frazzled mind couldn't focus. All I could think about was that my stepfather was now coming into the room. Coming for me.

"No, don't hurt me." My voice was a whisper now. "Don't hurt me."

"Kitten, it's me. I'm not going to hurt you. It's okay." He was now standing beside my bed. His voice soft and comforting.

I looked up at the person and all of a sudden my terrifying nightmare began to fade away and I slowly registered where I was. "Carson?" I questioned.

"Yes, it's me." He said, sitting on my bed.

"Oh Carson!" I said, flinging myself into his arms. He began to rub soothing circles on my back to calm me down.

"It's okay, Kitten. You're safe here." He said quietly. After I calmed down, I pulled away from him and looked up into his face. He used his thumb to wipe the remaining tears from my cheeks. "I woke up because I heard a scream. I immediately came to check if you were alright."

"I was having a terrible nightmare about my stepfather. He was mean and angry. It was all the same. He was hitting me and..." I shivered as the horrible images entered my mind again.

Carson wrapped his arms tight around me and pulled me to him again. "Shh. It's okay now. It was just a nightmare. He's not going to hurt you anymore." He whispered into my ear. His words were comforting and I immediately relaxed in his arms. He then pulled away slightly to look into my eyes. "I would never let anyone hurt you again. Not if I have something to do about it."

I stayed in his arms for a while, before Carson stood up. "Now, go back to sleep." He was about to turn away, when I held unto his arm.

"Can you stay with me please?" I asked. I didn't know if I could go back to sleep with that nightmare I just had still on my mind. I didn't want to be alone right now.

"Of course." He said. He walked around to the other side of the bed and climbed in behind me. My back was to him and he wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me closer. He kissed my hair and I snuggled closer to him.

"Carson?" I whispered after a while.

"Hmmm?"

"Thanks for staying with me." I said.

"I will always be here for you." He replied. Feeling safe, contented and grateful to have this wonderful person in my life, I felt much better. Tiredness overcome me and I fell asleep within minutes.

The next morning, I woke up to find that Carson was no longer in the bed beside me. Looking at the clock on the nightstand table, I saw that it was time to get ready for school.

I got out of the bed quickly and took a shower. I got dressed and finish getting ready in the room, before heading downstairs. I walked towards the dinning room to see Carson and his mother talking. Mrs. Knight looked up and smiled when she saw me.

"Good morning dear." She said.

"Good morning, Mrs. Knight." I responded.

Mrs. Knight's smile suddenly drops and she looked at me sadly. "I'm really sorry that my husband said that you can't stay here much longer. He can be stubborn and hard headed at times." She apologised.

I gave her a small smile. "It's okay, I don't hold that against him." I said truthfully.

She smiled again. "You're such a sweet girl. You are good for Carson. I just know it." She said looking from Carson to me. I felt my face heating up at her compliment.

"Are you going to talk to him?" Carson asked, looking at his mother.

"Yes, I'll talk to him." She said while nodding her head.

"Thanks Mom." Carson said. He then turned to look at me. "Are you okay?"

I nodded my head and gave him a smile. I then turned to Mrs. Knight. "Thanks so much for everything you are doing for me. I couldn't possibly thank you enough."  I said. I was really grateful that she was going to talk to her husband for me.

"I don't mind, dear. I like you. You're like a daughter to me and I love having you here. I really want to help you." She said genuinely. "And please, you can call me Marilyn."

I smiled at her. "Thanks, um...Marilyn."

"You're welcome dear." She then looked down at her watch and then to both of us. "Now you two better get going or you'll be late for school."

We were down here indulging into a conversation that I didn't even realize that we were indeed running late. "Okay, see you later." I said as I turned towards the front door. Carson gave his mother a kiss on the cheek, before he got up from the chair he was sitting on.

"Bye, see you later and have a great day." Marilyn called after Carson and I as we left the house.
