Carson's POV

Today was Friday and I was at the gym with my friends. I didn't have any fight match today. I didn't have any for the past weeks, because of the championships that was coming up.

The championship is the final match for the season and it was next week Saturday. I've done nothing, but prepare for it as the date drew near. The money that you get at a championship match is triple what you get if you win a regular match. That money could pay my college fund; I was really counting on it.

I had just finished with my regular routine of workout and I was now throwing punches and kicks at the burgundy square pad that Michael was holding up. The twins sat on the bench in the gym, goofing off or throwing comments at us now and then.

"So, you think you are ready for the championships?" Michael asked as I continued to throw punch after punch. Michael planted his feet firmly on the ground because of the force of my punches.

"Yeah," I said, then send out a punch with my right hand. "This is what I've been preparing for mostly. I really need this money."

Michael was quiet for a while and then he said. "Oliver is going to bring a hard fight, because he is set on revenge."

Oliver Ross will be my opponent for the championship, but it didn't make a difference to me. I was ready for anyone who I was going against. However, after finding out that I was going against Oliver, I've been practicing more. I knew that because of what I did the last time, he was going to be a challenge. A challenge that I was ready for.

"I don't give a shit about him. He can come with whatever he got, I'll be ready." I said firmly.

Michael grinned. "Now that's what I'm talking about. You're going to win. I just know it."

We continued to have small talk while I did a variety of kicking and punching techniques. Michael then put away the pad and put on a pair of boxing gloves and we started to match off with each other. I don't wear boxing gloves in the ring - it's one of the rules; but we always wear it when we're practicing. They makes the impact less painful during practice.

As we spared off, the only sound that could be heard was the sound of our heavy breathing, the squishing of the gloves and the shouts of Jayden and Jordan rooting either me or Michael.

After a while, Michael spoke up. "Is your dad still pressuring you to join his company?" He asked.

I nodded my head in answer. "He is never going to let it go." I said. "As a matter of fact, he wants to talk to me today and I have a feeling that it's about my future again." I sighed with frustration, as I dodged a punch from Michael.

Michael nodded his head as we continued to throw punches and dodging them. Just then, I connected a punch to Michael's nose. I smiled in victory, while Michael rubbed his nose and glared at me.

"Dude, I told you to watch the face." He complained. I just crossed my arms over my chest and grinned at him.

Just then the glare was removed from his face and was replaced by a mischievous smirk. "You're seriously going to pay for that." He said and before I have time to assess the situation, he launched at me and tackled me to the ground.

I heard Jordan shout from behind us. "You guys are idiots, you know that right?" I didn't have time to respond to Jordan, because Michael launched at me again and we began rolling around on the floor and grunting heavily.

Our match off wasn't a match off anymore, we were goofing off like two complete morons.

******

When I got home, my father was waiting for me on the couch in the living room. Mom sat beside him. Kayla wasn't home, she had left for Jasmine's house for a sleepover right after school.

Knowing the talk that I was dreading was inevitable, I walked over to the recliner adjacent the couch and sat down. My father sat up straighter on the couch and laced his fingers together. He looked like he was in the board room ready to convince directors and managers of another company of a proposition, instead of a conversation with his own son.

"Have you thought about our discussion as it regards to your future?" Dad asked.

"There is nothing more to think about, because I'm not changing my mind." I said evenly. I was really getting tired of this pointless conversation.

Dad took a deep sigh and he looked like he was trying to control his temper. "You can't throw away your life like this." He retorted in a hard tone.

I looked him squarely in the eyes. "I'm not throwing away my life, Dad. I'm going to be an engineer." I countered matching his tone.

"This argument seems to be going in circles. Why can't you understand that joining the company will be best for you?" Dad said.

"You mean best for you." I replied. "I don't want to join your company. Why don't I get a say in this? After all, it's my life." I reasoned.

"You are planning on wasting your life, Carson. You should do something useful." He retorted, his voice raising.

I lifted my eyebrows at him. "And that's joining your company? Why won't you get that I'm not interested in that?" I asked, then added. "I'm sorry, but that's not what I want to do and you're not going to make me. I can make my own decisions."

"Damn it Carson! Why are you making this so difficult?!" Dad roared, losing his patience. Mom, who was quiet the whole conversation, put her hand on Dad's shoulder to calm him down.

"You're the one who is choosing not the hear me out. You just want everything to go your way. What about what I want?" I asked, my voice indicating that I have no intention of backing down. I'm tired of him trying to run my life. I'm tired of him always putting me down and tired of him always putting his business over me.

The room was quiet for a few seconds, while my father just stared at me. My eyes didn't waver from his as I stood my ground. Finally, he spoke. "If you continue to waste your time on this silly dream of yours, you will no longer be my son."

"Marcus," Mom interjected in a warning tone. "Please, you're being irrational."

Dad ignored what she was saying and continued to look at me. I matched his stare. Blue eyes clashing with similar blue eyes. "Then I guess I no longer have a father." I said, meeting his challenge.

Dad was surprised that I didn't back out. After looking at me for a couple more seconds, he shook his head and stood up, walking away from the living room and up the stairs.

When he was gone, I met Mom's eyes. They were sad, confused and worried.
