Chapter 27

Declan's POV:

Olivia tells Ella it's getting late so she's going to head home and shower. They said there goodbyes and when they are done I pull Ellie back to me, she didn't let me finish my sentence.

"Declan I'm sweaty and gross." She whispers.

"I don't care." I say seriously, then I lean down to her ear and whisper, "I think it's sexy."

An immediate blush illuminates her cheeks coloring them crimson. On instinct, my thumb caresses her warm soft skin. My eyes fall to her glossy pink lips and I watch as she licks them.

I brush my thumb along her bottom lip and look into her very blue eyes. She watches me carefully with an aura of innocence. Not wanting to wait any longer I wrap my arms around her thin waist and land my lips on hers.

She reacts immediately standing on her tippy toes and fluttering her eyes closed. I pull away with the taste of strawberries in my mouth.

She wraps her small arms around me and rests her head on my chest. She hugs me tightly. "Why were you gone so long?" Ella mumbles.

A grin pulls at my lips, she missed me. "I was with Wes earlier and then I had football practice afterward, but don't worry I already showered," I say my grin growing wider.

She lifts her head to look at me and then try's to untangle herself from me, but I tighten my grip. "What do you think you're doing?"

"Declan I want to take a shower?" She mumbles.

I know she does but I ask anyway. "Why?" I pretend to be confused.

Her eyebrow raises, "Because I smell." She says like it's obvious.

"So?" I question with a smirk.

"Declan." She tries to keep a straight face but fails as her lips curve up into that beautiful smile.

"Ella." I mock back.

She lightly touches my chest, "I'm serious."

"Are you?" I question kissing her temple. But I bring my lips to her ear, "What if I don't want to let you go?"

She stares at me with her big doe eyes. "Then you're going to smell too." She says softly and I chuckle. She's so cute.

"I don't mind." I play with her a little longer and she frowns. "I'm kidding." I chuckle.

Releasing her from me I say, "Go take your shower." I pat her butt and turn her towards the house. She's gasps and rushes inside.

I make my way upstairs a couple of minutes later to her room. I can hear her shower going and I walk around looking at her pictures. I stop when I get to a shelve full of trophies and medals. She has at least ten trophies and I don't even know how many metals.

I pick up one of the trophies and read the bottom 'MVP'. Putting it down I pick up another one that reads 'Most Outstanding Defender'. I brush my hands along the medals and smile. My girl was good, no she was great.

Then I frown, I want to see her play. But she doesn't play anymore, she said she won't ever play again. She gets very closed off when it comes to this subject.

Scanning more of the shelve, I see a picture of her with her team. She's on one of her teammates back holding a trophy in the air with a big smile planted on her face.

I see another picture of her with an older man hugging her. I look a little closer and notice the similarities of his features to Ella's. This must be Ella's dad, he must have been in his early forties. Her eyes shown with love and happiness directed towards him, he was her hero.

Pulling my eyes away I walk over to Ella's bed and plop on it. Immediately her scent fills my nose, her sheets and blankets smell like her.

Crossing my legs and laying my hands behind my head I get comfortable. When Ella gets out of the shower I want her to come with me to get Riley.

There's no way I'm letting Ella out of my sight yet, not when I have to drive an hour to get Riley. If something happened to Ella and I was an hour away, I would just about lose it.

I know Riley misses me, and I hate when she's upset. When I called to check up on her earlier she started crying and I knew I had to get her. I know Ella adores my little sister and they get along well.

My aunt has been taking care of her but soon I want custody. I want to know Riley's safe and I know she would prefer to live with me. Riley and Ella are the only two people who I have a soft spot for.

The bathroom door opens shaking me out of my thoughts. I bring my gaze up to Ella taking her hair out of a towel. She has loose-fitting shorts on along with one of my t-shirts.

A smile lights in my lips, she was unbelievably beautiful and she didn't even know it. I hate how other guys check her out when we go places. She's doesn't notice because she's so timid and not at all self-centered. She always puts everybody else's needs before her own.

"Come here," I say patting my lap.

She looks at me and slowly makes her way over to the bed and stops. I take her arms and pull her onto my lap.

"You're so beautiful," I mumble into her hair. Her shampoo must be vanilla and coffee, I can't get enough of how good she smells.

She hides her face in my chest, she's most likely blushing. "Hey don't hide from me." I tilt her chin up and was right. Her face is full of color, not to mention her rosy cheeks.

"You're not so bad yourself." She mumbles. I let out a laugh, she's adorable.

A smirk overrides my face, "I know."

She shakes her head and lets out a giggle. I watch as she uses her hand to cover her mouth and I notice the way her nose scrunches.

"Do you want to go get Riley with me, I think she's going to stay at my place for the weekend?"

Her deep blue eyes find mine and a huge smile displays upon her face. "Of course I want to come."

"Good," I say pecking her on the lips.

She jumps off of me and stands up. Then she takes my hand pulling me up. "Come on let's go, we can't keep her waiting D." She cheers excitedly.

I stand up, "D?" I question.

Her eyes dart to the ground and she folds her hands together nervously. "Yeah, it's a nickname."

"A nickname?"

"Mhm, I wanted my own nickname for you because you call me Lil' one." She mutters. She brings her eyes up to search my face. "Wes calls you Deck, so I'll call you D, w-well umm if that's okay?"

Thinking it over I respond, "Whatever you call me, I'll love it because you came up with it."

She smiles and kisses my cheek. "Okay D." She whispers.

We walk out to my car and I open the door for her. She thanks me and I go to my side and get in. Turning on the car, I pull out of the driveway and go on my merry way.

I glance over at Ella, noticing she has a frown on her face. Putting my hand on her thigh I ask. "You okay?"

She looks at her hands then at me. She unfolds her hands revealing a package of white marble cigarettes. I left them in my council totally forgetting to move them, she didn't know I smoked and I didn't plan on telling her.

"Y-you smoke?" She asks quietly.

I take the cigarettes from her hand place them on the side of my door. "Occasionally, I'm not a consistent smoker," I answer brushing it off.

"Declan I-I....it could cause cancer."

"I know the side effects Ella," I say bluntly.

She looks at me stunned. "Why do it then?" She questions, anger clear in her tone. I glance at her knowing she's angry.

She never raises her voice at people but I can tell she's mad, her voice becomes higher. Her arms are crossed and she won't even look at me. I would be lying if I said it didn't hurt. I've never experienced her being angry before.

"It releases stress, it helps my anger issues."

She finally looks at me. "That's not a good enough reason if you know it could k-kill you." Tears blur her eyes, threatening to fall.

"Ella I'm not going to die, you're overreacting."

She pushes my hand off her thigh and now I know that was the wrong thing to say.

"I don't think I am." She says quietly. "I don't care if you don't get sick, I care about the risk that you might, and that's enough reason not to." She whispers barely audible as a tear slides down her cheek.

Seeing her cry makes me feel like a complete dick. Here I am again not considering her feelings. I made her cry, I hate when I'm the reason she cries.

Keeping my eye on the road I reach over and brush her tear away and take her hand. She's about to pull away but I catch it before she does.

"I'm sorry, don't cry." I soothe softly. My thumb runs circles onto her hand. "I'll find another way to release my stress."

She glances at me, "D-Declan I didn't mean to judge you, I-I just care about you and I don't want anything to happen to you."

"I love you, you know that?" I say.

A small smile returns to her face. "I love you too."

We sit silently for a little while. Ella looks out the window watching the different scenery. She amazes me, she's handles everything in such a mature manner. Even when she's angry she thinks logically. She's afraid of the what if's.

If we were in different positions and she's smoked or did drugs I would be mad to. Except I would handle it differently, I would probably raise my voice and says things that I would regret. So I get where she's coming from.

Fifteen minutes later we pull into my aunt's neighborhood. I can feel my self getting anxious, I miss Riley as much as she misses me. I can't help but think she's mad at me, I haven't visited in a while and she sounded broken over the phone.

Ella squeezes my hand knowing we're almost there.

Before we get there I ask, "Stay with me tonight?"

"Y-you don't want quality time with her?" She asks.

"I do but I also want quality time with you," I say like it's obvious.

She scans my face, "You sure?"

"Ella, I never not want to be around you, actually I want to be around you all the time."

Her mouth drops open and then closes. Her contagious smile forms on her pink lips.

"I never not want to be around you too." She says.

"Good because you're stuck with me," I say pulling into Riley's driveway.
