💫ANGEL💫

Loki and I went out onto the strip where there were several shops to choose from. We ended up going into the closest shop to the hotel. I could tell from the moment we walked in that it was an expensive, but very tasteful establishment. Crystal chandeliers sparkling from the high ceilings, great art hanging on every wall, over-priced designer on each rack. It wasn't exactly my first choice, but I wanted to look pristine when I waltzed into Giselle's mansion. I wanted to look like I belonged in that star-studded façade of a happy home. A showstopper.

"Hell, yes. That's the one, dude." Loki nodded as I exited the dressing room.

Adjusting my collar, I checked myself out in the mirror. Staring at my own reflection, for the first time in a long time, I loved the person standing in front of me. There was a glow that illuminated the darkness around me. It was like a swarm of fireflies, lighting up the night sky, creating a florescent haze of pure goodness. That was something I never thought I'd see in myself again. My eyes darted towards my feet as I felt a slight smirk edging across the right side of my face.

"Exactly. You know you've hit the mark when you make your own dick hard."

"Loki?" I scuffed. "You say the weirdest shit at the worst times, man." I couldn't help but laugh a little. I loved Loki. He was literally everything I needed sometimes.

"My bad. Dang." Changing the subject, he held up a suit in the air. "So, you're going blue, and I'm going nude."

We both paid for our clothes and made our way out of the store. Our next order of business was dress shoes. I couldn't find any that I liked, and after going into three different stores, I gave up, deciding to throw on some sneakers instead.

"Suit yourself, dude. I thought you were trying to make an impression." Loki started on his reverse psychology bullshit. "I mean, you only get to meet your future mother and father-in-law once, right? Gotta go out in style, I guess." His sarcastic shrug made my flesh crawl.

I rolled my eyes, feeling an edge of agitation, but also knowing he was right. If I wanted to look like I belonged, I would have to dress the part from head to toe. But did I want to fit in? Isn't that what her little high school sweetheart did? Look where that shit got him. I literally fucked his girl the day before his pop up visit and then fucked her again while she slept in the bed next to him. Damn, the way every wrong, troubled, pitiful stroke made her scream my name. How could he not hear us? How could his senses not kick in, alerting him of the fuckery taking place a few inches away?

"Hey! What the hell are you guys doing on this side of the continent?" A familiar voice rang in my head. I remembered thinking, did I conjure up this idiot's presence?

"Aaron?" Loki questioned, causing me to snap out of my thoughts and focus back on the present moment.

"Yeah, dude. Loki, right?" He motioned towards us, not really allowing his eyes to wander in my direction.

"What's up, man." My mouth spoke without my permission. I wanted to slap myself.

"Hey. Angel, right?" The excitement wasn't as strong as it was for Loki.

"Yup." I scratched my head, lowering my eyes as they displayed an ample amount of awkwardness. There was no way I was about to pretend to be buddy buddy with Giselle's ex. No way in hell.

"Yeah, we're just here for a little party." Loki gave me an eye. Immediately, I knew he was about to start playing one of his sick little games. "So, how's Giselle? Or...Star, I think you call her, right?"

I choked back a laugh so hard that I thought I was going into a full bronchial coughing attack. I tried clearing my throat quietly, but every time I tried Aaron's eyes would shoot in my direction.

"We haven't been talking much these days. I saw her on her first day home, though. For a second. She kind of just took off afterwards though." Poor guy sounded sad. Why the fuck should I care.

"Hmm...could've been jetlagged?" Loki shrugged. "I'm sure you hung out after that." Gently patting Aaron on the shoulder, he quickly eyed me, tightening his lips.

"Nah." Aaron began to fidget, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. "We haven't hung out at all. I actually was over her house this morning. I knocked on her door a few times, but she never answered. Her parents told me she as up all night, so I figured she was catching up on sleep."

I held my breath, immediately, knowing it was me that kept her up all night. It was me that had her sleeping like a cooling corpse.

"Yeah, she's a bit tricky. That damn Star. Shine so bright she'll blind even the keenest of men." Loki grinned.

Another attempt to choke back laughter, and I coughed even more that time, turning my head to avoid eye contact with both of them. I looked around, desperately, for a distraction. There were none. Just a bunch of straight back, chin up bastards, pretending to look for a "new look".

"Hey, Loki man. We've gotta go. The party started an hour ago." My voice came out strained. It was painful.

"Alright, well it was nice running into you guys. I'll be seeing you both soon."

As I was walking towards the door, I quickly turned back to face Aaron, unsure of the meaning of the last words he spoke. Loki looked just as stunned as me.

"Seeing us?" I asked?

"Yeah. I'd been trying to get some time alone with Star to tell her. I got into SFU for the next semester and, being that my dad's firm is opening two offices down there, I'm coming early."

Every laughter I held back, joking about the idiot he stood there portraying, came back on me. Karma didn't take her time. That bitch did an illegal U-turn and came crashing my way sooner than I'd liked. How the fuck did he just plan to come live on campus or near campus all of a sudden? This prick was after my girl. I bet this was some antic to get her back. Fuck no!

ON THE WAY TO GISELLE'S, my phone went off multiple times. Sitting in the back of that car felt like the loneliest ten minutes of my life. Even though Loki was sitting right there beside me, I couldn't help but think about the news Aaron shared. He was moving to campus and attending campus? How would this affect me and Giselle? Would this put a dent in the progress we'd recently made? Would we still get to know each other and build our way into a strong relationship? Or was he on his way to crash our fairytale attempt at happiness?

"You going to get that?" Loki nudged me.

"Yeah." I took out my phone, and without looking at the Caller ID, I answered. "Yep." I sighed.

"Happy Thanksgiving, son." A raspy and tired voice spoke from the other end of the phone.

"Dad?"

"How are you?"

"I'm good. I'm fine." I nodded, slightly assuring myself that those words were finally true.

"Good. I was hoping you'd be on your way home. Hoped you changed your mind about seeing your old man and mom."

"No, dad. Mom doesn't want to see me, and you, well...you've got mom." I looked over at Loki, who was making a purposeful effort to mind his business.

"Well, I just wanted to call and say Happy Thanksgiving and see how you were doing. I know holidays aren't the greatest times for you lately."

"Lately, eh?" Sarcasm kills sorrow every time.

"Yeah. I love you, son."

"I love you too, dad. How's mom?" Saying her name always made my heart ache something terrible. My mouth would go dry as my body weakened, wanting to ball up into a tight ball and tuck myself away from the painful world.

"She's...she's having a hard time today. She's in Lina's room.

"Oh." I lowered my head, wanting to just die.

"We miss that girl." He laughed a little, something he always did to fight sadness.

"I miss her—I miss her too. Really bad." Without noticing, I'd started rocking from side to side. self-soothing again. I hated talking to anyone from home. The moment I heard their voices or witnessed their grief, I just wanted to die. I couldn't handle it. So, I didn't attempt to.

"I've gotta go. Can't do this right now." I sniffed, wiping my left eye before a tear escaped.

Once I hung up the phone, I took a dozen breaths, trying to bring myself back to a stable headspace. It was a battle I realized I could have lost easily. My mind juggled the memories of my mother's accusatory gaze, pointing its demonic little finger at me every time I was in her presence, and my last memories of Lina. That stupid ass bridge and that dumb ass car.

"So—" Loki placed a hand on my shoulder, making a point to look me in the eye before he continued. "What's the plan? How are we going about crashing this party?"

I could tell he was riding up on his armored horse as I hung on tight to sanity, slipping slowly and painfully with each second. He was attempting to save me from myself. Something only a true friend would do.

"Uh—I was thinking we just be ourselves. Have some drinks, eat some food, change up the music at the right moment, and turn that mother fucker out." I laughed.

"What do you think Giselle will do?"

"Join us. I'm certain. I kind of gave her a warning to see her reaction. She'll be down."

"Dope. I'm amped.

"We're here." I sighed, reaching for the door.

"Hey." Loki stopped me. "Put all that extra shit to the side today. Lets have fun and we'll think about our shitty lives later." He nodded.

"Deal." I returned the nod, reaching for the door and getting out.

"Time to crash a party!" Loki's smile grew wild as the twinkle in his eyes. He loved stirring up shit and I loved him for it.

"Lets fuck shit up!"
