A couple of days after Reed had helped me in the gym, Danielle had been calling me non-stop.

I'd been purposely ignoring her calls as I got my story straight, but decided that I should probably reply some time soon.

I hadn't told Reed that she'd been calling because I didn't want to worry him, but I was scared that I was going to let something slip. I had to make sure that she didn't find out the truth.

Danielle may have been my friend, but she's one of those people who involves themselves in others business. I wouldn't allow her to get involved in this.

I was sat in my bedroom, watching TV when she called me again. I took a breath in before answering the phone.

"Hello?"

"Hey Julia, why haven't you been answering my calls?" she asked.

"Oh sorry, I've just been busy I guess."

"Oh well, I was wondering if you wanted to meet up for lunch this afternoon. I feel like I haven't seen you in such a long time!"

I closed my eyes and cursed under my breath, so quietly that she couldn't possibly hear me.

I knew that I couldn't say no to her after ignoring her for days, because she'd just keep asking until I said yes. The only problem was that I had to ask Reed to leave.

"That sounds...nice. I need to check first, but I think it'll be okay." I sighed.

"Check? Sounds like you're with Logan all over again, nobody controls you now Julia, you can do whatever you want!" she chuckled.

She really has no idea.

"I guess you're right." I mumbled.

"Okay great, i'll meet you at Preston's Cafe at 1.30?"

"Sounds great." I said sarcastically.

"Okay, see you then!"

After I ended the call, I fell back onto my bed with a groan. I really didn't want to go. Danielle has ways of getting information out of me and she knows exactly when I'm lying.

I knew I had to be careful.

I also wasn't looking forward to asking Reed for permission to leave the house. If he said no then I was screwed.

I left my room and walked slowly over to the closed study door. I knocked lightly on the door before hearing Reed's voice on the other side, telling me to come in.

I entered the room, with one hand remaining on the door handle. I was shaking slightly due to nerves.

Reed didn't scare me but he was still intimidating and I didn't like it when I made him angry.

"What's up Jules? I'm busy." he said, keeping his eyes on the papers in front of him.

"Can I go out this afternoon?" I asked cautiously.

He shot his glare up at me and raised his eyebrows.

"Why? Where will you be going?"

"Just meeting a friend for lunch."

"Who?"

"Just my friend, Danielle." I said, rolling my eyes subtly.

"Okay, but make sure Jonathon has eyes on you at all time and call me immediately if you have any problems." he demanded.

I nodded towards him before leaving the study. I let out a sigh of relief and hurried to my room to get ready for lunch.

Let's get this over with.

~

When I was ready, Jonathon drove me over to Preston's cafe to meet Danielle. I was quite nervous to be seeing her after all this time, my life had changed so drastically.

Jonathon had agreed to sit at a table close by to ensure that he was following Reed's orders but would still be able to remain anonymous to Danielle.

He'd told me to give him a signal if anything went wrong and I reluctantly agreed.

As we entered the building, I could see her busy texting in the corner of the cafe. It was a medium-sized place and it was pretty modern.

When we arrived, there were quite a lot of people but Danielle had chosen a seat far away enough to give us privacy, which I was thankful for.

Jonathon quickly found a seat nearby and grabbed a menu to slightly hide his face.

I took a deep breath before walking over and sitting down opposite her.

"Julia! It's so nice to finally see you, I was getting worried about yo- oh my god, what happened to your face?." she asked, looking at the bruises on my face, which I'd already forgotten about.

"Oh don't worry about it, it's nothing. How are you anyway?" I asked, trying to sound as enthusiastic as possible.

"I'm really good actually. I got a new job and oh...I hope you don't mind, but I invited the officer working on Logan's case to meet with us today."

"You what?" I panicked.

I'd barely got my cover story straight for living with Reed, never mind a story for what happened that night with Logan.

I wasn't ready to be asked questions by a police officer. I know Reed told me not to worry, but what else am I meant to do?

"Yeah, when he was questioning me he mentioned that he hadn't been able to get a hold of you, so I offered to help. He's also amazing in bed." she cackled whilst attempting to wink discreetly.

I quickly had to hide my disgust. Now it makes sense as to why she was trying to contact me, she didn't really care at all.

"Speak of the devil, here he is now." she said as she stood up to greet the man approaching our table.

He was just taller than Danielle but looked quite a few years older than the two of us. He had a devilish look on his face and I was already uncomfortable.

I didn't trust this situation in the slightest and knew that I had to get out as soon as I could.

I discreetly looked over to Jonathon to see him on a phone call. He looked extremely alarmed and I cursed under my breath, knowing that he was talking to Reed. I assumed that he may have recognised the investigator.

This wasn't going to end well.

"Julia, this is detective Hayes." Danielle stated, looking extremely excited.

I smiled falsely and shook his hand as he took the seat beside Danielle.

I felt extremely targeted. This whole meeting was planned and I needed to get out fast.

"Please, call me Sam."

"Okay Sam, what did you need to talk to me about?" I sighed.

"Well you see, I'm investigating the death of Logan Anderson and need to ask you some questions regarding the night of his death."

"Oh, how do you think he died?" I asked obliviously.

"Well, we believe that it could've been a homicide."

I gasped and forced my eyes to well up with crocodile tears, a skill that I'd learnt as a child.

"W-what do you mean? You think he was killed?" I stuttered as Danielle held my hand in comfort.

Fortunately, I think my amateur acting was working on them.

"Yes, we believe he died under suspicious circumstances. Could you describe the last encounter you had with Mr Anderson?" he asked, taking out a pad and pen from his pocket.

Just as I was about to lie to the detective, I saw Reed marching towards the cafe through the glass doors.

"Shit." I yelled accidentally, causing both Danielle and the detective to turn around and look at what had caught my attention.

Reed was now directly behind them and had made eye contact with me. He looked enraged and my face dropped.

"Julia, we're leaving now." he boomed with his arms crossed over his chest.

Danielle turned back to face me with her mouth wide open. She let out a silent 'Oh my god', obviously impressed by Reed's appearance.

"Julia, who is this?" she gaped, pointing towards Reed over her shoulder.

"He's...the friend I'm staying with." I said, standing up to join him.

"Yes and now we're leaving." Reed announced, grabbing onto my hand.

"Mr Eastwood." Sam said, standing up to face him. "Nice to see you again."

"Stay away from her, Hayes." Reed snarled.

They were now squaring up against each other, as if they were ready to fight. I placed my hand on Reed's chest to get in between them but his eyes remained fixed on Sam.

I wasn't about to let him cause a scene in front of a cafe full of people, who were already watching things unfold.

"You guys know each other?" Danielle asked.

"Reed let's just go." I whispered, attempting to hold him back.

All of a sudden, he spun around to leave the cafe, dragging me with him by the hand.

He was moving at speed, making me to trip over my own feet, but by the time we were out on the street I'd managed to pull my hand away.

"Reed, slow down! How did you know that guy?"

I saw him rub his hands over his face before turning around to look at me. He was fairly riled up and there we clearly things I didn't know.

"He's the one cop who's out to get me Julia."

"Out to get you? What are you talking about?"

"He's been trying to get me locked up for years. Luckily, he's had no evidence but now he's on this case and he's going to try and go through you."

"Well, I won't let that happen." I said, furrowing my brows.

He began to laugh slowly whilst dragging his hands through his hair.

"Trust me princess, if I can't do anything then you sure can't." he said, moving closer to me.

I could see the fury in his eyes and I couldn't lie that I was intimidated.

"Well, I just won't answer his questions. He has no evidence that you were even there, don't worry." I shrugged.

"I know but it's frustrating. You aren't to meet up with these people ever again." he demanded.

"I thought you said that you had people in the police force to prevent things like this? You can't stop me from seeing my friend!" I said.

"Look, working with the police is complicated. They can't stop Hayes from coming after me and he won't stop until I'm in prison. Also, I can stop you from seeing your friend and I am."

"Can't you just...deal with him? This isn't fair." I said quietly, avoiding his eye contact.

"That would bring more attention to me unfortunately. We can't just kidnap people all the time." he smirked.

"You kidnapped me." I said under my breath.

He swiftly pulled me towards him and stared me straight in the eye. Our faces were centimetres apart and you could feel the tension in the air.

He was moving his stare from my eyes, to my lips and back again.

"What was that?" he whispered, his face becoming slightly scary.

"Reed..." I whispered.

"Do I make you nervous sweetheart?" he smirked.

I stared at him intensely. He already knew the answer to that question.

"I would never help him, you know that right?" I said, ignoring his question.

He took a deep breath and loosened his grip ever so slightly.

He pulled away from me and turned around coldly, walking slowly towards the car, leaving me stood alone with blushed cheeks and sweaty palms.

What was all that about?

I'm not sure what I said wrong, but he didn't speak to me after that.

This was the first time I'd seen him so worried about something. He liked to keep me away from his work.

I knew he'd figure it out himself, but I wished that I could help in some way.

I wouldn't allow him to be put in prison and I certainly wouldn't let the detective use me to get to him.

If I ever saw Sam again, I wouldn't be as nice.
