Hazel POV

I I washed my face with cold water and headed towards the nurses’ station, hoping to catch Penny there. I wanted to accompany Dr. Anderson on his rounds so I could check on the kids myself. After a while, Penny came to get me.

As we walked down the hallway, I could feel my nerves starting to kick in. I hadn't seen Aiden since the incident, and I wasn't sure how I was going to react.

When we reached the end of the hall, Dr. Anderson and Penny were already there. "Dr. Anderson, you remember Hazel, right?" Penny said, introducing me.

Dr. Anderson extended his hand, and I shook it nervously. "I didn't properly introduce myself. I'm Michael Anderson," he said.

"I'm Hazel Hart," I replied, feeling a bit embarrassed. "Thank you for letting me come along, Dr. Anderson. It means a lot to the kids."

"So I've heard. After you, if it's okay, I would like to start at the end of the hall with Alice," he said.

I nodded, trying to steady my breathing. We walked into Alice's room, and I saw Aiden sitting next to her bed. I tried my best to avoid his gaze and focus on Alice.

"Hazel! You're back!" Alice exclaimed as we entered the room. But as soon as she saw Dr. Anderson, her expression turned anxious. "Hazel," she said, looking down.

I mustered up all my courage and went over to her bed. I leaned in and whispered in her ear, "It's okay, Alice. I'm going to be right by your side the whole time." She looked up at me and nodded. "Whenever you're ready, Dr. Anderson," I said.

Dr. Anderson nodded and proceeded to check on Alice. Meanwhile, Aiden asked, "How is she doing, Doctor?"

"It looks like she's doing a lot better after her last round of chemo. However, I'm going to have to run some blood tests," Dr. Anderson replied.

Alice immediately started to panic and shake. "What? No. No. No. No. No!" she screamed.

"What's going on?" Dr. Anderson asked.

"What's happening to her?" Aiden asked at the same time.

I got into bed with Alice and cuddled with her, trying my best to soothe her. "Shh. It's okay, Alice. I'm here with you. Everything is going to be okay. Shh. I'm right here," I said, stroking her hair. She slowly started to calm down.

"Are you feeling okay, honey?" I asked her.

"Yeah," she said, rubbing the tears from her eyes.

"Now, what did I promise was going to happen every time you had a test?" I asked her.

"That you were going to be by my side and hold my hand the whole time," she replied.

"And have I ever broken a promise?" I asked her.

"No," she said, rubbing her nose.

"Okay, so there is nothing to worry about, right?" I said, trying to cheer her up.

"No," she said, giving me a small smile.

"See? Everything is okay. Now, can I see that beautiful smile?" I said, looking down at her. Alice smiled at me, and I felt my heart swell with pride.

"Um, Miss Hazel, could we please go see the rest of the children?" Dr. Anderson interjected, breaking the moment.

“Hazel where are you going? You’re not leaving me are you?” Alice said with sad eyes.

“Alice I have to go help your friends. Remember the promise I made to them? I can’t break a promise can I?” I said. “Plus your brother is here. You should spend a little more time with him. I promise I'll come and say goodbye before I leave today.”

“Ok” Alice said. I gave her a kiss on the forehead and walked out with Dr. Anderson and Penny.

“What happened in there?” Dr. Anderson asked.

“Alice gets panic attacks whenever she’s going to get blood work done. We don’t tell her when she going to get them. Instead we tell her she’s going to get some treatment. We don’t let her see and usually I hold her hand when that happens.” I said.

“What happens when you aren’t here?” He said.

“All the nurses have my number. When ever Alice needs blood drawn they call me and I come” I said.

“Yes that’s right. Hazel is our little angel.” Penny said and I smiled at her.

“Well we should go see the next patient” Dr. Anderson said.
