When I made it home I went upstairs to talk to dad. I found him sitting at his desk shuffling through papers.

He looked up when I walked in. "Hey, son how did it go?"

"It's great dad thanks and the flowers mom sent were a nice touch."

"Oh? I didn't know about that part. How is Ayla?"

"She's ok. I took her back to her place to shower and grab clean clothes and dad she's barely getting by. She lives in that trailer park near the diner."

"Oh is that where you met her?"

"I did... She works there and her car is shit and undependable and her brother is in the army and sends money when he can." I shrugged.

"I'm glad we could help her son. How is her mother?"

"No change dad. I told Ayla I would be back with dinner."

"I'm sure Clara will pack some things for you."

"Thanks again dad for all of your help. I don't like throwing our name around but it helped.

"Sometimes Hart you have to but I don't like doing that either but she wasn't getting proper care."

"I know dad and it sucks how people are treated if they don't have money."

"I'll say it again you have a big heart Hart and I'm proud of you."

"Thanks, dad. We did kiss today and well it's nothing like I expected. I felt something right here." I said pointing at my heart.

"That's how I've always felt about your mom. When you know you know and she's going to need you son."

"I feel like I need her too. I wasn't searching for anyone and you know I always do my own thing and I'm leary of girls because of mom's fame but she had no idea."

"That's what makes her real son. Head on out of here and go get some food and take to her. Call or text if you need me."

"Thanks, dad!" I said before walking out the door.

I saw mom in the kitchen and I walked over to her... "Thanks for sending flowers."

"It's the least I could do." She smiled.

I walked over to the table and Poppy smiled... "Small world huh?"

"It is and Ayla freaked when she found out you were my sister."

"She's sweet and I hope her mom will be ok." She said.

"Thanks, Poppy! I'm headed back to long care for a while."

"Can I go Uncle Hart?" Ryder asked.

"I'm sorry little man, not this time." I frowned.

"Ryder he's going to the hospital to visit his friend's sick mom. You don't want to go there."  Poppy said.

"I'll make her a get-well card!" He smiled.

"Thanks, Ryder!" I said rubbing the top of his head.

"Here you go, Hart," Clara said handing me a bag.

"Thank you, Clara! Bye guys!" I said before walking out the door and heading out to my jeep.

When I made it back to long-term care Ayla was on the phone and I held up the bag and sit down.

She held up one finger and I just smiled at her and sit down at the table by the window.

When she hung up the phone she walked over to the table. "I'm sorry Hart that was Christian my brother and he said to tell you all that he appreciates all of your help."

"It's no problem at all. Have a seat and let's eat. Clara made my favorite." I smiled.

"What is your favorite?" She asked.

"Spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread and a salad," I said opening the containers.

"Oh wow that smells so good and I didn't even know I was hungry until I smelled that." She smiled.

"Any changes for your mom?"

"No sadly nothing. The doctor came back in this morning and then another doctor called that your dad suggested and he is supposed to come by on Monday and do an assessment." She said.

"I'm glad my grandma Josie was able to find someone."

"Tell her I said thank you!"

"Poppy was excited to learn my friend was you. I saw her earlier when everyone gathered for dinner."

"Why didn't you stay and eat with them, Hart?"

"Because I wanted to eat with you, Ayla."

"Thank you for coming back and for being my only friend Hart."

"Come on now you must have some friends," I said.

"I don't Hart. I mean sure people come in and out of the diner like your sister but I don't have any friends to hang out with. I work and go home to mom or well I did."

"Well, we can change that. I am your friend and every Sunday we have a family dinner where we all gather outside under a tent and have dinner together and I want you to come on Sunday Ayla."

"Really? Are you sure I won't be intruding?"

"Hell no. Poppy's friends come and sometimes my cousin brings people with them. I mean I never have brought anyone but I'd like you to come."

"Ok, I'll come with you. I would like to thank your whole family for their help and I'm not sure what kind of weight your dad has here but everyone is super nice but Hart I can't afford this."

"I know you can't and it's ok dad already has taken care of your mom's stay here. It's paid in full."

"What? Oh Hart I can't let your dad do that! It has to be thousands of dollars and I can never repay him." She cried.

I pulled her into me. "You don't have to worry about anything."

"Sunday you say?" She smiled wiping her tears.

We finished our dinner and I gathered up Clara's bowls or she would never give me anything else.

The nurse came in and check vitals... "Ms. Fox is still the same no change I'm sorry to say."

"Thanks," Ayla said.

When the nurse walked out of the room I walked over to Ayla and held her in my arms.
