Thalia Lively

I watched on as the two elder ladies spoke, they looked at each other with such kindness. I watched on in admiration.

"Thalia." My grandma, Heidi but I always preferred to call her Nonna, turned around calling my name. She motioned with her hand for me to come forward. I obligated even though all I wanted to do was run back upstairs so I could catch the sunset from my bedroom window.

I walked from the doorstep, down to the drive way where my grandma stood and the other lady she was speaking to.

"Jenna, this is my granddaughter Thalia." She says while smiling widely causing wrinkles to appear around her small doe-shaped hazel eyes.

Jenna was a dark haired, tall and lean lady. She didn't seem as old as my grandma but probably in her fifties. She wore a long grey cardigan, holding it closed in front of her, attempting to keep her body warm from the wind.

"Hey, wow you're gorgeous! It's a pleasure to finally meet you, your grandmother talks about you daily." She shook my hand and chuckled at my grandma as she swatted at Jenna.

I blushed but laughed quietly as Nonna shrugged.

They continued talking, having a lighthearted conversation but I tuned out, the yellow and orange leafs catching my attention. It was my favourite season, and I couldn't be more... content. Not quite happy but I was brought into a peaceful state.

The sky was a light grey with some darker parts scattered across, but I knew the sky would clear around 8/9pm and I would get to see the sunset. I can already see the clouds moving across, allowing the sun shine through.

The leafs were slowly and peacefully falling off the trees and onto the newly dried ground, the rain was getting heavier recently according to Nonna.

I didn't mind the rain or the sometimes heavy wind, I've always liked it even as a kid. The loud thunder during the night brought a sense of calmness.

I was brought out of my thoughts when Nonna lightly tapped my shoulder. She looked at me with concern. "You okay?"

I shrugged it off and nodded at her assuringly. "Yeah, sorry I spaced out."

She nodded, and her smile reformed. "Jenna has a daughter the same year as you, maybe you guys can go to school together and she can show you around? I know she'll be more than willing, right Jenna?"

Jenna immediately grins and nods enthusiastically. "Yeah, I've already told Riley about you, she's dying to meet you. Is that okay with you?"

I hesitated, but they didn't catch the moment of unsureness.

"Yeah, of course." Plastering a smile on my face then excusing myself from the two, I was beginning to notice the sun slowly going down.

I ran back in and right into my room; my room has the best view that I've ever seen. The sunsets right in front of my window and I quietly thank my grandma for giving me this room.

The house was gigantic.

Too big just for one elderly woman, and still too big for me and her both living here. We didn't need all this space but Nonna loved this town and adored this house.

It was a theme of white, grey and black colours all throughout the house but the furniture makes it look more homey and warm. Instead of leather, hard couches there were grey, comfy couches.

My room was the smallest but even the smallest room was big, who needs all this space?

I refocused my attention on the sun going down and I swear, I stopped breathing. It's so beautiful, the amount of adoration and obsession I have for sunsets and sunrises probably isn't healthy. I love it when the colours bounce off the clouds, creating a mixtures of pinks, purples, oranges, yellows. It was breathtaking.

Watching the sunset reminded me that there are incredibly beautiful things in the world still, with our generation and society, people have turned ugly real fast.

But the sky, the sky never loses its touch. It always changes into different colours and patterns but it's always one thing; gorgeous.

The sky is something humans can never ruin, it'll always remain untouched and pure. It's the one thing humans can't corrupt and break. It's a masterpiece that'll always be framed in my mind.

"Thalia, dinner!" My grandmas soft voice cuts through my thoughts. With one more look at the sky, I quickly grab my camera and take a picture. This would probably be the last time I see the sky like this for a while, it's going to be rainy all week and most likely longer than that.

I continued looking at the sunset until I started to smell Nonna's delicious lasagna. I ran downstairs and she smiled knowingly at me.

"So, how do you feel about going to a new school?" She sat down beside me with her plate and waited for me to speak patiently.

"The same way I always feel about going to school," I paused and looked down at my plate. "Miserable and annoyed."

She laughed loudly, the sound echoing throughout the huge home freely.

"I don't blame you, but hey it's your last year, you can pull through."

"Yeah." We were pulled into silence and I was grateful that she hadn't brought up the incident. I'm grateful to see her happy because honestly, seeing her a little less worried and sad makes my mood somewhat turn easeful and calm. I'm grateful she can get my mind off of everything that's trying to rip me apart.

"You can drive right?" She asked me curiously and I gave her a deadpan stare.

"No Nonna, I cannot."

She looked shocked for a second before she remembered who her son-in-law was. "Right, you were daddy's girl."

I looked back at my plate and she coughed, setting her food on the table. I watched her get up and walk over to the kitchen, grabbing two glasses. I stopped paying attention to what she was doing and instead noticed on how much she's changed.

She looks healthy.

The opposite of how she used to look a year ago, she spent countless days in the doctors office to get medication and countless trips to the hospital when nothing would help. My family always lived on the other side of Canada so we never saw her that often, she called me every night though.

I loved hearing her voice from time to time, it was soothing.

"You don't mind driving Riley to school with you, do you? Jenna asked and I didn't know if—"

"Nonna, of course I don't mind."

She sighed in relief and came over to me again, placing the glasses on the table and putting a hand on my shoulder.

"Thank you, Riley doesn't have that many friends, she's quite like you in that sense. She's adorable and kind and genuine but she prefers being alone. Not sure why, she's extremely outgoing." She spoke with love, I could tell she really cared about this Riley girl. It makes me happy that she has people here to care for; and then to care for her.

With us being so far, I can imagine she gets lonely.

It was dim in the house now, the soft rain starting outside. Without my grandma being here, this would feel cold, dreadful. She seemed to bring a sense of warmth and ease. God, did I love that about her.

We finished eating and she shoo'd me away to sleep, but not before kissing my forehead.

I got here just two hours before Jenna saw Nonna in the garage, I guess they live only a couple houses away on the opposite side of the street.

With a look at the window, I get ready for bed, for as tomorrow would be the most dreadful day of all.

How was it?

I may be writing this story but I'm the farthest thing from being called an author. I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm basically a wannabe author.

But hey, it's the first book I'm honestly trying to complete so I may not have that much experience with writing now, BUT don't fret, I will in no time. I lied, probably not but anyways.
