Thalia Lively

Once Bethany finished stitching up my cut at the back of my head and gave me medicine to help with the pain, she guided us to the boys since Riley asked to see them like a hundred times.

"Ew, it's so gross." Riley said as she looked at my stitches and I rolled my eyes. Thankfully it was at the very bottom of my head and they didn't have to shave that part of my head for the stitches; Bethany worked through the hair.

"Shut up." I said pushing her face away from my head when she tried to get a closer look. Bethany laughed quietly as she watched our interaction, clearly enjoying how grumpy I am because of the amount of times Riley gagged when she watched Bethany stitch me up and the pain felt like a crowbar was jammed into my head, so there's that.

I put my hood on, feeling a bit insecure about my stitches, which is weird because two years ago I would always volunteer at the hospital and injuries never bugged me.

Bethany and Riley walked in front of me, talking about something random but I tuned out, being brought to my own world when my focus was turned to a little girl sitting in a waiting room next to her grandfather. I stopped walking and stood there, my heart shattering once I saw that he was looking at a family photo, more specifically at his wife in the picture. I knew it was his wife since he twisted his wedding ring around his finger nervously, looking at the picture sadly.

"Papa, she's okay right?" The little girl that had blonde hair and striking blue eyes, asked her grandfather obliviously. It was clear she wasn't informed of any information regarding her grandmother, most likely for only the best intentions.

"She'll be alright." He looked at her, nodding but it seemed like he was trying to convince himself more than her. I remember being that little girl at one point, in the exact same spot but with Nonna beside me and my grandfather in the hospital bed.

Ill never forget that day, Nonna was at her worst during that time as well, she was still sick.

At least that's what everyone used to tell me, that she was only sick, and there was nothing to worry about. They never told me what was really going on, always dodged my questions when I wondered about her true health condition. But then she moved back to her home town and I never really got the chance to figure it out, I always wondered why she just suddenly got up and moved back without a second thought.

"Thalia?" My name was called from my right and I saw that Bethany and Riley stopped walking when they noticed I was no longer following them. With one more look at waiting room, I walked back to Riley who was watching me quizzically.

"You okay?" She asked quietly and I nodded, keeping a straight face. As we walked up the stairs and into another white painted hallway, I decided that I no longer wanted to be in here. All of my worst memories were created here and I refuse to relive the past, I refuse to dig back into memories that broke me at one point.

We walked on, Bethany guiding us to the bigger rooms. I guess they put them all in one room, which was probably requested by the boys. I all of a sudden started wondering how Nathan and Carter feel right now, waiting for their friends to get better while they're in a horrible state. I wonder how many times something like this has happened, do they start getting used to the hospital visits or was it nerve wracking every time?

The white with faint grey spots tiled floor caught my attention as I walked looking down, not wanting to look at what and who was around me in case everything started rushing back again.

"Okay, walk straight and turn to your first left, they're in the room that has Nathan sleeping outside of it. I have to go get some paperwork done." Bethany turned to us, smiling softly then leaving shortly after.

Riley started walking faster, just wanting to see if they were okay already. I don't blame her, but her all of a sudden care and new found friendship with the boys were heart warming to see.

"Well then." She stopped and I looked over her shoulder to see what she was looking at and there was Nathan sleeping over five chairs, with a cast on his right arm. I paid attention to his tired state, taking in his clothes that would've normally made someone looked homeless but on him, it never looked better. He was wearing grey sweatpants, a black fitted shirt and some black nikes.

I walked over to him and shook him gently but it was no use, he was sound asleep. I tried shaking him once more but this time he struggled to get comfortable and started moving around, obviously very sleep deprived as I'm sure he stayed up all night for the past two days. I couldn't sleep either knowing Nonna was hurting.

"Nathan, wakey wakey." Riley said poking his face, as if that would get him to magically be woken. I didn't want to wake him up at all but we couldn't go in the room without him as I'm sure he knows if we are even allowed to go in. We stood there, debating on what to do when we heard a squeal come from the end of the hall.

"Thalia!" I looked over, seeing Maya and Emery running over with junk food in their hands and Carter walking behind them lazily. He also looked tired, the sudden eye bags showing under his eyes. The girls ran over, hugging me with whatever space they left in their arms and smiled up at me while heartedly. I sent them back a small smile and crouched to their level, diving into a conversation with the adorable little girls who are for sure going to grow a huge space in my heart.

"What are you two doing here?" I asked curiously, didn't they have school?

"Nathan was suppose to watch us today but he refuses to leave this place without Ethan, Emmett and Austin with him, so our mom just brought us here to stay with him." Emery explained, speaking way too fast but it wasn't a problem since I caught every word. I nodded, admiring Nathan's protectiveness of the boys.

"Whatcha got there?" I pointed to the candy, chip bags, ice cream sandwiches, juices, and twinkies that were tucked into their arms. It was a lot of food and I somehow knew it was just for them and not for anyone else.

"We went to go eat and took Carter to pay for us then made him pay for this too on the way back." Maya said, looking at the twinkies, practically drooling. I chuckled as she didn't break her gaze from the twinkies when Emery nudged her. I looked over at Carter to see his reaction to Maya's statement, only to see him slapping Nathan's cheek repeatedly.

"Wake up. Wake up. Wake up. Wake up. Wake up." He said over and over again, each time with a not too rough slap added. When Nathan shows no response, Carter pulled his left arm, causing Nathan to get dragged off of the chairs and onto the floor.

"But, why?" Nathan asked with his face facing straight into the floor, making no move to get up. He turned his head so he's face to face with Carters shoes, not having the energy to look up at him. From my point of view his tired, childish like pout was being shown as he blinked trying to get his eyes to open up fully. He yawned then hummed afterwards, closing his eyes as if to fall asleep again.

"You have the key dummy." Emery said from my side and shook her head at her big brothers actions, stuffing chips into her mouth afterwards. Maya hugged her twinkies closer to her and smiled goofily at her brother as he turned around to look at Emery accusingly.

"I'm not a dummy." He said childishly and forced himself to get up, knowing we weren't going to let him sleep any longer. He stretched, his back and hands cracking as he did so, causing the girls to grimace.

"I hate when he does that." Maya said to me, Emery nodding in agreement.

"Can I have som of those—" He started off, eyeing Maya's twinkies but then his eyes flickered to Maya and I, his peaceful state gone and formed into a more aware state.

He looked at Carter who was pointing at the door key hole. "The key, Nathan, the key."

Nathan rolled his eyes and took the key out, opening the door and Carter ran in, jumping on an empty bed. Maya and Emery ran also giggling and I smiled as they sat in the middle of the huge hospital room and put their food in front of them. This hospital was as expensive looking as the rest of the town with floors on top of floors and huge rooms. Riley walked in and I behind her but we weren't in anyone's view yet as we stayed behind a wall.

"My little nuggets are back." I heard Ethan's voice say happily.

"Stop calling us that." Emery groaned and threw her hands up into the air. Maya started digging into the twinkies but my focus was cut off from her as I felt Nathan's warmth penetrate onto my back, as I assume he stood close, leaning over me to look behind the wall.

"Never." Ethan responded, switching through the channels on the T.V boredly.

A nurse suddenly also entered the room and Ethan looked panicked, as Austin looked at the young nurse with heart eyes and Emmett watching the two annoyed.

"No, no more needles." Ethan demanded, as if it was his choice in the matter but really he didn't have a say in this as the nurse was already getting the needles ready.

"Do you want the pain to continue?" The blonde nurse looked at him amusingly and he crossed his arms, not taking his eyes off of the needles in her hand.

"Listen here lady, I'm sure you guys have pills for the pain, do you not?" Without removing his eyes from the needle that was going into Austin's forearm. Austin watched Emery and Maya, smiling at how they joked between themselves about Ethan's fear of needles. Ethan was next on the needle list and I was really looking forward to how this would go.

"Yes we do, but the medicine that gets inserted to your veins can get into your system quicker and faster." She got his needle ready and looked at him patiently as he rubbed his sweaty palms on the bed.

"One, two—"

"PAUSE." He stopped her count and put his hands up. "I want to count."

She huffed and waiting for him to give her his arm. He turned away and put his arm towards her, not wanting to look at the needle going into his arm. "Okay, one, tw— WHAT THE FUCK?" She smiled as she bandaged his arm and he glared at her evilly. The boys to his sides were laughing and shaking their heads at Ethan's behaviour.

Emmett put his hand out to get the needle, going on his phone with the other hand. Once he was done, she stuck around to get some extra things in order.

"Where's Nathan?" Emmett asked the girls and I quickly grabbed his shirt and pushed him out of our hiding spot so he could be seen by the group. He stumbled then turned to narrow his eyes at me.

"Who else is there?" Austin asked, trying to lean forward but he would have to get up to see us.

Riley couldn't help herself and jumped out of the hiding spot, wanting to finally talk to the boys. She covered her mouth with her hands. "Oh my god, you guys are okay." She tearing up and dashed to hug each of them, not being to hold back.

She went to Austin first who pouted at her teary, glossy eyes. She hugged him tightly then moved onto Ethan who sat up too quickly, causing his head to start spinning.

"Oh my fuck." He said holding his head but reached one arm out for a hug, wanting to get his very own Riley hug. She then looked at Emmett, suddenly turning shy and hesitant.

Emmett say there with his arms wide open, waiting for his hug. She awkwardly walked over and gave him a side hug and I rolled my eyes.

"How come they got better hugs than me?" He looked at her accusingly and she started letting out a long 'um', not sure how to reply. "No, I want a proper hug." He pulled her in and sat up, wanting a full, long hug. Their hug was longer than the other ones and I internally started fan-girling. That's my girl.

Her face was bright red afterwards and she shuffled over to me silently.

"Where's Thalia?" Ethan looked around and I took some small steps away from the wall and his face lit up brightly.

"Why didn't you come sooner?" Ethan pouted and opened his arms wide open, clearly gesturing for me to hug him. To be honest, I felt guilty for not helping them that night, I just stood there like an idiot. I felt responsible, if I made a move to help them, maybe they wouldn't be in this position.

"I felt like it was my fault." I mumbled quietly as I reached in for a hug, he immediately pulled away and looked at me confusingly.

"What do you mean?" He asked, having trouble trying to figure out what I had done to make it my fault. I couldn't answer since Austin called out for me, wanting a hug also. I walked over and he dragged me on the bed with him, squeezing me to death. I got off and slapped his shoulder lightly, my head starting to hurt the sudden action.

I walked over to Emmett, also giving him a hug. I finally took a second to look at the state the boys were in, Austin had his left ankle, head, left arm and knee bandaged up. Ethan had his whole head bandaged up with bruises on his face and neck but nothing too serious other than his head and neck. Emmett looked horrible, his lip was cut open with redness and swelling around it, a small bruise under his eye, a cut on his jaw, a cut on his neck leading down to his collarbone and that was all I could see.

"You should see the other guys." Ethan said, noticing me eyeing their injuries sadly. I wish this never happened but then again no one controls these things, it happened and I'm glad they're up and smiling.

After a little bit, Carter fell asleep and Nathan started talking to the guys about something serious while Riley and I talked to the girls.

I suddenly heard running in the hallway and I got up, curiosity taking over as I wondered what was going on. I left the room without anyone noticing and watched on as nurses flew past me down the hall and making a left turn urgently. My curiosity grew, and so did my anxiousness. I followed them quickly and froze when I turned that left corner, deja-vu flashing right before my eyes.

Three bodies were being wheeled into separate rooms while a boy— who looked about sixteen —followed them sobbing into his shirt. His red eyes reminded me of my own when I was once in his place, I started breathing faster as the nurses urgently traded information between the patients. I distinctively remember fighting through security guards just so that I could stay by my family. I wanted to at least say bye as they slipped through my fingers but I didn't even get the chance.

A nurse came by and took the boy into her arms, letting him cry out as he sunk into her hug. I watched on painfully, maybe this how everyone felt that night as they watched me cry out in agony. I hated the way life worked, but that's just how it is, right? Everyone always told me that we couldn't stop it, it's inevitable that we were planned to soon die. But this isn't how we were made to die, we weren't made to die on human caused actions.

I let a tear slip down and into the floor, as much as I tried to believe that they weren't really gone, they were. They were dragged out of this world forever and I was forced to live without them; I was forced to live on with the memory of losing them right before my eyes.

A hand grabbed my shoulder lightly and I jumped, turning around quickly becoming aware but relaxed when I saw that it was Nathan.

"How long have you been standing there?" I asked somewhat quietly, unable to use my full voice as I feared I would choke on the words.

"Long enough." He looked at me intensely and my gaze flew back to the hallway that held the crying boy who was now sitting a chair outside of his fathers room.

"I have to go." I said, not being able to stand being in this nightmare spawning building anymore. He grabbed my wrist as I tried to run off and I turned around abruptly.

"Are you okay?" He asked and I almost laughed out loud, if I had a quarter for every time someone asked me that, I'd be rich.

I nodded, again not trusting my voice.

"No you're not." He said confidently and I narrowed my eyes at him.

"Is that so?"

"Yeah, but you will be now that I'm here."
