Chapter Sixteen

Shut Up, Detective

It was 9 in the evening when the four lads were brought to the police station to be asked by Detective Robert Weismann. He requested to talk to each of them separately: first was Ismail, then Travis, then Louis, and now, Richard. He began by asking them about what happened before, during, and after the night Edward disappeared. He also asked them if they were responsible for Alejandro’s death. Every conversation got creepier due to the hanging bulb swaying from the ceiling.

“...that Friday, we went home earlier because the party was sort of... boring,” Richard recalled the moment from the time Edward disappeared.

“Did you drink at the party, Mr. Grayson?” Weismann interrogated.

“Yes,” Richard grinned, “Coke, Lemonade, Soda...”

“Hmmm,” Weismann narrowed his eyes, “Alcoholic drinks? Did you and the others drink?”

“Nope,” Richard answered, “Louis and I didn’t.”

Weismann slowly nods his head, “We found out that Edward was intoxicated in his autopsy report. He drank in that party, right?”

Richard swallowed, “He’s a partygoer! He drinks a lot.”

“Has Edward fought with someone, before?” Weismann threw another question.

Richard pressed his palms, look at the two-way glass seeing if there was someone watching them. “None.”

“During?”

“I don’t know,” Richard’s tone suddenly raised, “he’s went somewhere, maybe, making out with a cheerleader.” Then, Richard’s eyes widened as if he remembered something, “Oh yeah!” But he did not continue to talk because he remembered that Edward told them his story about having sex with someone when they were going home that night and if he will speak about this to Weismann, he will be caught that he was lying about Edward going home early.

“What?” Weismann asked, “What is it?”

“Uhh,” Richard sputtered and he switched his mind in creating a lie, “um... I remember seeing Edward making out. But arguing with someone? Um... no...”

Weismann eyes were even narrower than before, “what about after?”

“No clue,” Richard answered, “I told you, he already went home.”

“When his body was found,” Weismann switched to another related topic, “the autopsy report stated that he was killed when the body was found because the wounds and cuts were still fresh.”

“Really?” Richard said. “You mean? He was alive for months?”

Weismann nodded. “He might have been kidnapped.”

“What do you think happened to him during those days?” Richard asked.

“I’m the one who should be asking you that. I’m the detective here. I ask questions.” Weismann crossed his arms as he smirked. “Okay, I think we’re done here – we’re not really totally done. Once a new info has arrived, we will be calling you again.”

Richard nodded.

“By the way, since you’re the last, I’ll be asking people from that party. Whose party was that anyway?”

Richard got goose bumps thinking that they might get caught if Weismann will question another person from the party. But he had no choice but to answer. “Jude O’Brien, sir. He threw that party.”

“Okay,” Weismann jutted-down Jude’s name, “you may go. Have a good night. Thank you.”

Richard forcedly showed his courtesy by smiling. He was about to stepped out the door when he put both his hands in his pocket. He felt the sealable plastic with Edward’s wristwatch in. He remembered that he needed to give it to the police to be examined. “Oh, Detective.” He handed down the plastic.

“Who owns this?” Weismann asked.

"Edward’s” Richard said. “The tow mechanic found this in my car.” Suddenly, something snapped on Richard’s head. Bad move! He thought that he was stupid in giving the wristwatch because that proved that Edward was with them the night he disappeared. He totally forgot about it. He did not think ahead, as well as the others.

Weismann glanced at Richard, “The tow mechanic? So your car has been towed? I thought Edward was not with you when you got home?”

Richard exhaled fast thinking about his wrong move, so he quickly spoke without processing what to say. His lies weren’t that obvious, though. “He’s not with us. I think the watch was in the van during the party.”

“How come Edward removed the watch during a party?” Weismann asked as if he was about to caught Richard lying. “Who would remove their wristwatch and placed it in a vehicle?”

“I remember seeing him going outside before he made out with the cheerleader,” Richard snapped, “I think he doesn’t want his watch to get scratched or something. My car was also opened that’s why he got access.”

“You think?” Weismann asked narrowing his eyes to Richard, “Which is which young man? What really happened that night?”

“That’s what happened that night,” Richard cried, “really!” His heart was palpitating fast.

Weismann turned silent for a moment. “You may go. Have a good night.”

Richard emerged to the door.

“Oh, by the way,” Weismann added for the last time, “thank you for turning this. And, once I caught you lying, you’ll regret about it.”

Richard swallowed a gob of saliva. Then, he grinned. “Sure! Be sure to examine the watch. Good night!”

Richard met with his friends in the waiting room and they all went home.

Hours had passed, Detective Robert Weismann called it a day for him, so headed to his car to go home. When he was about to open the door of his Mitsubishi, his Nokia suddenly rang. He looked at his screen and it was from an anonymous number.

“Speaking,” Weismann answered as he put his hands on the door.

“Hello?” the lady on the other end said in a soothing voice.

“Who is this?” Weismann seemed to like the woman’s voice.

“I’m Stacy from Love Caller Contest and you won for this night’s call,” the lady surprised him but still using a sexy voice.

“Really?” Weismann jumped in little excitement, “wait, I did not register.”

“You don’t need to register,” the lady said, “we already had your number in our list.”

“Really?” Weismann was astonished as he looked around the vicinity. The parking space was already cleared up. “Hold on, is this a joke?”

“No, this is definitely, true,” the lady on the other end said. “So let’s get this over with, shall we?”

“Okay.”

“Are you married?” the lady added.

Robert looked at his ring on his left hand and quickly shoved it in his pocket. “Um, none. Totally, bachelor!” Then, he hopped in his car. “Is this some kind of a radio contest?”

“This isn’t radio, actually,” the lady said, “we think you might have entered someone’s L-I-V-E-S.”

“What?” Weismann asked.

“... and as tonight’s winner, we’re or I, will be asking you out tonight for a date and I will personally treat you,” the lady added.

Weismann locked his car and was looking at the mirror trying to check his beautiful face. He got excited. “Where will you take me, then, Stacy?” Weismann grinned.

“Well, Robert...” the lady started. Then, her voice switched from female to a distorted male’s voice. “I’ll be taking you to the morgue!”

“What?” Robert’s eyes widened.

Suddenly, a man in black hood with a black ski mask on holding a knife appeared on the back seat. Robert turned and the killer immediately slashed his throat before he could even make a move.

Blood began to splatter on the windshield as he clutched his neck to apply pressure. He reached his hands on the compartment to grab his pistol but the killer drew the knife on Robert’s chest. He screamed in pain and blood continued to spill out from Weismann and struggled retaliating.

Then, the killer took hold of his head and bashed his face on the windshield and stabbed his back to death. It appeared that the lady on the phone was the killer and holding some kind of app to imitate a woman’s voice. The killer fled and quickly vanished in the sea of identity.

Later that night, Richard was lying on his bed thinking that Detective Weismann might eventually know the truth. Suddenly, his iPhone beeped which startled him. He grabbed his phone from his side and read the message.

You don’t have to worry about the detective. I’ve already shut him out. –E

Richard’s eyes widened. Don’t tell me Weismann’s dead? Then he called Louis who also received the same thing as well as Travis and Ismail.
