The lipstick colour that stains my lips is a nude colour which reminds me of my cousin, Zoe. She's in Australia now, us no longer in contact despite how much I wish we were. After I finish my makeup and make sure my hair is curled to my satisfaction, I head downstairs to the kitchen while praying my mother doesn't go into my room.

It's a complete mess and if she sees it, I'll surely be dead.

When I reach the kitchen, the beautiful aroma of blueberry muffins wafts up my nose and I can already feel myself ready to drool. You know how everyone has that one particular food item that anyone can bribe you with and you'll definitely fall for?

Yeah, anything blueberry related will do for me.

My stomach grumbles in hunger and I pat it, hoping that the muffins are ready so that I won't have to wait. When our grey and white kitchen comes into view, I can see my mother in her pink button up blouse and pencil skirt, pulling out the tray of muffins with a kitchen glove.

"Morning mom." I greet, catching her attention. She casts me a smile over her shoulder, a few strands of her hazel hair falling from her bun and into her face.

"Morning sweetie." She breathes out, placing the tray on the counter and blowing the strands of hair out of the way. She pulls the gloves off before giving me her full attention. However, mine is drawn to the golden muffins in front of me, mocking and teasing me. She chuckles as she watches my mouth water before picking two warm ones up and placing it on a plate in front of me. I grin up at her, taking a seat at the kitchen island and cutting into the deliciousness.

"How did you sleep?" She asks, crossing her arms over her chest.

"Great and you?" I ask, letting out a soft moan when I chew the muffin. My mom laughs at me, her brown eyes- much like my own- twinkling as she watches.

"I slept well, thank you. Are you going to Sunny Smiles today?" She asks me,  and I nod.

"Yeah, Lucy said she'll be there." I inform her.

Sunny Smiles is a nearby children's home that is in need of some volunteers. Luckily for them, I want to go into philanthropy which ultimately means I have to do some form of charity work for credit. This is why I've decided to ask for an interview with Lucy. Of course this means I have to work after school, along with balancing schoolwork and assignments, but I feel this is where my heart lies so I don't mind working for it.

My mother smiles at me before checking her watch. "You should probably get going before you're late." She says and I nod in agreement, standing up with my now empty plate. I place it in the sink, grabbing my backpack from the other chair and pecking my mom goodbye.

"Thank you for the muffins, they were delicious." I smile and she grins at me, the few wrinkles she has from both laughing and stress making an appearance.

"Only a pleasure, now go!" She shooes me away, making me giggle. "Have a good day!" She calls out to me when I reach the front door and I shout a quick "you too!" over my shoulder before opening the front door and walking out into the Miami air. It's only early in the morning and the humidity and heat of Florida is already overbearing. I sigh, climbing into my white Audi and switching the air-con on. The scent of vanilla can be smelt from me constantly spraying perfume in the car and I breathe in deeply.

I may or may not have a thing for the scent of vanilla, too.

I reverse out of my driveway and once on the road, I turn my radio up to sing along to Avicci. I need something to help me cheer up from the Monday blues. Eventually I pull up outside of a tall beige building with the words:

RIDGEVALE HIGH in bold.

I scoff as I turn down my volume, thinking about how it should rather be called 'hell'.

Yeah. That's much more fitting.

I park in my usual spot, nobody else ever taking it, which is under a small tree and close to the front of the school so that I don't have to walk far. I switch my engine off, climbing out of the car and back into the humidity. I sling my backpack over my shoulder and walk into the school, ignoring the stares and whispers that follow me as I go.

I'm used to it now. It's something that becomes frequent when you're an Elite.

I head to my locker first, unlocking it and exchanging books so that I have everything I need. The soft murmurs that reappear behind me alert me that another one of the Elite are near.
"Hey, Soph." An all to familiar voice greets me. I spin around to face Kelcy Winters, my best friend since freshman year. We've always being different yet the same. She was always looking for a boyfriend while I was okay being single, I have long, brown chestnut hair while she has a short, black bob, and I dress elegantly yet trendy as she dresses in a more edgier way. However, we both have to deal with the same drama that comes with being a part of the top of the social hierarchy, and we both know how to make each other laugh. That was what probably pulled us together.

"Kelc, hey." I say, giving her a quick hug after I close my locker. We begin walking together to our first class while she babbles on about pointless drama that is of no use to me. However, she eventually pipes up with something I've being meaning to ask.

"You know Tyler's party is on Friday, right?" She asks me and I smirk at her, curious as to his plans.

"I thought it was supposed to happen next week." I say and she shrugs, her black hair moving as she bops her head up and down.

"Yeah but he decided to move it up since his parents moved their trip up." She tells me and my mouths form an 'o'.

"I'm taking it that you're excited?" I smirk at her and she winks at me, her glittery smoky eye catching the light.

"Obviously." She laughs.

Kelcy is quite the party girl. Whenever and wherever there's a party she's there, and you'll definitely catch her in the kitchen by the alcohol where she's probably getting wasted. That's also one of the many things we don't have in common; she goes to parties to get drunk and let loose while I go there to dance and have fun. While sober. That's her though and I love her for it, so her habits don't bother me.

When we finally reach our maths class it's already full, our two seats left alone though. We head over to them, sitting down and pulling out our notebooks to begin the day. Girlish squeals are heard just as Chris and James make their way inside the class and I restrain from rolling my eyes.

James and Kelcy have had a thing for each other for as long as I can remember however, neither of them have ever acted on it. Of course James doesn't have a problem getting girls though. With his good looks that consist of black hair and golden eyes, he gets girls easily.

Chris on the other hand is quite the opposite. With golden hair that's cut short, dark blue eyes along with a tall and sturdy build, he's also caught quite a few eyes. I'll admit that he's attractive but I've never felt attracted to him. We've being best friends for a long time too and I would be lying if I said he didn't hold a special place in my heart. Chris is like the older brother I've never had. He can make me laugh yet is always there for me when I'm down. He's all in all, a great guy.

"What's up girlfriends?" James smirks at us and Kelcy giggles as I roll my eyes. Chris chuckles at my reaction.

"Good morning, Sophie." He greets, sliding into the other chair beside mine. I grin.

"Morning, Chris." I respond back, opening my notebook onto a plain piece of paper so I can scribble notes down.

He smiles at me. "How was your weekend?"

"I saw you on Saturday."

"I take it as amazing then." He teases and I laugh at him with a shake of my head. I don't get to respond to him as Mr Howald walks in, dropping his briefcase on the floor beside his table with a loud thud.

"Alright, everyone." He informs, quieting down the chatter in the classroom. He turns to the board, picking up a piece of chalk and writing our topic for the lesson on it. I almost groan out loud when I see it.

"Today we'll be going over algebra." He begins, not waiting for the late students.

I make my way to the cafeteria, Kelcy behind me, as fast as possible so that I can get some food in my stomach that feels more like a blackhole at the moment. When we amble into the bustling room, the loud chatter of my fellow peers can be heard. I spot my usual table; it being in the middle of the cafeteria so that everyone can see us.

As Kelcy and I make our way to the Elite table, it's obvious that Megan and Chris are in some type of disagreement. For the last few months Megan and Chris have being dating but I don't see why they're still together. It's obvious there's no legitimate feelings there.

It's like a love-hate-hate relationship between the two of them.

Maybe Chris is with her for her good looks, although I highly doubt it, since she is pretty after all; with golden brown shoulder-length hair and full lips, along with her tan Asian skintone, of course she's quite a sight.
I ignore their bickering as I take a seat beside Ashleigh, saying hello to her in the process. I flash Logan and Courtney a wide smile.

"Hey Courts." I greet and she smiles back, her white teeth almost blinding.

"Hello, Soph."

Courtney Smith. Queen B and ultimate bitch of the school. She basically runs the place since everyone is so petrified of her. With her long, curly brown hair, hazel feline eyes, and tall, slender build of a model, every one in one way or another admires her. Not only that but since her parents are the proud owners of Smith Enterprises, she's insanely rich meaning she has the best of the best when it comes to anything.

Not that the rest of the Elite are too bad off considering most of us come from business parents although I don't.

Right beside her is Logan Ross. He's cold, stoic and absolutely arrogant. He thinks that just because he has the looks- blonde hair and crystal blue eyes with a toned body- that he's the shit. Not to mention his father is one of the richest men in Miami at the moment due to his business.

Together, Courtney and Logan keep everyone in check and make sure that the social hierarchy is controlled here at Ridgevale High while being the most popular people and golden couple, too.

Nobody wants to mess with Courtney and I couldn't blame them. It doesn't matter who you are- step on her toes and she won't hesitate to knock you down a few pegs. I've experienced it first hand.

The Elite consists of the nine of us: Tyler, James, Chris, Logan, Megan, Kelcy, Ashleigh, Courtney and me.

Ashleigh has being a good friend of mine too. She's basically a replica of barbie; blonde hair, blue eyes, fair skin, impeccable fashion sense.

Megan and Courtney are best friends, basically joined at the hip although Megan seems to rely on Courtney too much. However, I think Courtney enjoys it. It gives her a sense of control.

Logan and Courtney have being together for the past few years, Chris and Megan dating too -although they shouldn't be- while James and Kelcy don't do anything about their feelings. Then you have the completely single club: Ashleigh, Tyler and me. However, Tyler and Ashleigh don't mind one night stands with strangers.

I do though.

Overall, we've being friends since freshman year and I would be lying if I said it hasn't being a journey.

I turn to Tyler, still blocking out the nearby argument.
"So you've moved your party up to this Friday?" I ask and Tyler nods, flashing me a mischievous smile.

"Yeah. My parents moved their trip up." He repeats what Kelcy already said to me earlier.

"I don't care what you plan about this party," Courtney says "but don't you dare invite your cousin. She still can't get over the fact that I don't like girls." She scorns and Tyler chuckles.

"Well at least she's great in bed." James pipes up and my nose scrunches up in disgust.

"Ew James. Nobody wants to know about your sex life."  Ashleigh scowls and the boys laugh.

"What?" James shrugs. "She's always over at Ty's house. Why can't I enjoy her a little bit?"

Courtney rolls her eyes and sips on her water just as Chris and Megan start arguing even louder. None of us bother to show any concern considering this is a day-to-day thing. They argue, make-up, act like nothing happened before the whole process starts all over again. It's completely ridiculous. However, Chris is cut off from scowling at Megan when the Rebels walk in.

The Elite and Rebels have a mutual distaste for one another although I'm not sure why. Like I said, the Elite control the hierarchy here and as much as Courtney wishes that the Rebels were at the very bottom, they're actually at the top along with us. Both groups are popular and admired, just for different reasons and in different ways.

The Elite are the rich, classy and superior with a constant need to have a good reputation where as the Rebels on the other hand are the cool kids. The rebellious and bad ones who don't give a damn about their reputation. That's what people admire about them; how they don't care yet still seem so amazing yet with the Elite, they admire how 'perfect' we come across although they don't know how hard we work to keep that facade up. Students admire the Elite out loud since it seems acceptable where as with the Rebels, they admire them from the shadows; never saying directly how admirable they are but still one way or another implying it.

It's a complicated and silly concept but it's one that's enforced here at Ridgevale High anyway.

They all walk in with intimidating gazes and careless postures. It's clear just by appearance as to how different they are to us. They wear ripped jeans, sneakers and leather jackets despite the heat where as we wear dresses and fancy outfits even though we're just at school. They look a lot more comfortable than us. A few of them also come from wealthy backgrounds but it's still not to the extent of the Elite. I've had many encounters with the Rebels but never one-on-one so I don't really know what they're like.

However, I do have a fair idea.

Logan and Dylan, one person in the Rebels who Logan dislikes greatly, glare at each other as they all make their way to their usual table at the far end of the cafeteria. Tension is thick in the air as the Rebels and Elite fight it out in their heads. However, I merely look away, not taking part in something so immature. I do notice that Alex, the player of Ridgevale High, is missing though and I wonder if he's a screwing some girl in the janitor's closet although I shake that idea off since he wasn't in class either.

One of them flips the bird at Courtney and my lips quirk into a tiny amused smile although I wipe it off as quick as it comes so that nobody notices. Once they've reached their table and taken a seat, Courtney lets out an annoyed sigh, looking away from them.

"I fucking hate them." Logan sneers, casting them a glare.

"You're not alone." Ashleigh responds, taking a bite of her apple and chewing rather loudly.

While they go into a heated discussion about the Rebels, I cast my attention to Chris who seems pretty pissed off at Megan. He notices me watching him and looks my way, giving me a tired smile.

"Hey Megan, want to swap?" I ask, referring to seats. She looks at Chris briefly and he raises an eyebrow at her.

"Sure." She responds, standing up along with me so we can switch. Once I'm besides him he lets out a relieved sigh.

"So what was it this time?" I ask him softly so that they can't hear.

He grits his jaw. "She's mad because I missed her call when I was watching the football. Apparently she wanted us to go for dinner."

I feel the urge to laugh hysterically at her reason but restrain from doing so considering they think this is such a serious matter. "I'm sorry Chris. Don't sweat about it though. Buy her flowers and she'll forgive you."

He snorts but gives me a warm smile anyway. "Smart and gorgeous? Aren't you a catch..." Chris teases me and I laugh, poking him in the ribs.

"Hey, don't call me gorgeous. You have a girlfriend mister." I play scold him and he smiles weakly, looking at Megan for just a second.

"Doesn't seem for much longer." He mumbles and I give him a sympathetic look.

"Tell you what, when you're free we can go watch that movie you've wanted to for such a long time." I counter and he chuckles before pulling me into his side and poking my waist.

"I'd really like that." He answers with a charming smile just as the bell rings. I stand up and after bidding my goodbyes to everyone, I head to Chemistry with Kelcy while hoping that it won't be as torturous as I'm expecting.
