Chapter twenty: Date night (Zach's POV)

"Make it make sense, Spencer. Out of the blue, he just gets her number, calls her, asks her out, and she says yes?!" I exclaimed.

It's Friday, Spencer was coming over today so he was riding back with me and Ellie went with Brett because I've been annoying her today.

"Maybe she likes him, what's it to you?" he asked.

"What's it to me? She's my friend," I replied.

"Doesn't sound like it right now. A friend would be happy for a friend, no?" he chuckled.

"What does it sound like to you?" I asked.

"You sound a little jealous to me," he said. I scoffed and rolled my eyes. "You do. You're questioning his intentions and methods. You think he'll do something bad?" he questioned.

"No," I answered.

"Then what is your problem?"

I don't have an answer to that.

How do I explain to him that Isaac just isn't right for her and that she's wasting time with him?

"Forget it," I mumbled while parking in my usual spot before we climbed out while Brett and Ellie got out not too far away from us.

"Ellie, can you reassure Zach here, he's a little worried about your date," Spencer said as we got into the elevator. I punched his stomach and he let out a huff, holding the spot.

"Not my problem," she shrugged. Something is up with her, I swear. First all the snapping and being sassy with everyone, it's not just me, then all the strutting around, folding her arms across her chest, having an issue with everything, getting annoyed by everything, it just seems weird.

"When is he coming to get you?" Brett asked.

"He's not, I'm meeting him there," she replied as we entered the apartment.

"He's not picking you up?" Brett, Spencer, and I all asked in sync.

"What is wrong with you guys?" she asked in confusion.

"He's taking you on a date and he's not even coming here to get you? Are you serious?" Brett huffed.

"Well, I'm sorry. I haven't exactly told him that I'm living with the two of you. I actually am interested in him, I'd have him stay rather than shoo him off," she rolled her eyes. She's been doing that a lot too.

"Why would knowing that shoo him off?" I questioned, sitting at the counter.

"Because last time I went on a date, you," she pointed to Brett, "Interrogated him to the point where liking me seemed like a sin that would send him straight to hell. You weren't here but I know what you'll do," she shrugged at me.

"I'm not gonna do anything," I shrugged.

"Bet," Spencer and her scoffed together.

"What?" I asked in confusion.

"Zach," Brett gave me a pointed look.

"What? Seriously, I won't. We're not fifteen anymore," I scoffed.

"Yeah, but you're still possessive Zach," Spencer. I opened my mouth to say what I always do when the guys say this to me.

"Protective, not possessive, there's a difference. We know," Brett rolled his eyes.

"It doesn't bother me that she's going on a date with someone. Isaac is a good guy," I shrugged.

"You just said she's wasting time with- Jesus!" Spencer winced when I punched him again.

Can't he just keep some things to himself?

"She's wasting time right now, she should get ready, that's what I said," I lied blatantly.

"Right," she said, nodding slowly. "Hmm," she smiled, "Interesting." And then she disappeared into her room.

I glared at Spencer before turning to Brett who was sipping orange juice from the carton. "Why does he..." I trailed off, pointing my thumb at Spencer while questioning Brett. "Just be quiet," I shrugged at Spencer, "It's not that hard."

"Why? Because you have a little crush on her? Please, everyone knows you still have a thing for her. Brett even talked about it," Spencer shrugged.

Brett glared at him before turning to me. "I didn't say that. We were talking about earlier, when we were younger," he shrugged before throwing the now empty carton at Spencer.

"Yeah, right," Spencer said under his breath.

She came back out but halted when we all stiffened, trying to act as if nothing happened. "I will never understand," she shook her head before grabbing some chips from the pantry and going back inside.

"He's not even gonna come pick her up? What kind of date is that?" Brett asked as we sat on the couch.

"He could, if one of us called him," I shrugged.

"Don't do that. Seriously, unless you want to piss her off, don't do that. I don't recommend that," Spencer shook his head.

He always takes her side. To be fair, they did become friends first.

I introduced Brett and Nathan to the group, she brought in Spencer and Ashley, that's how we all know each other.

"Shut up, Spencer," Brett and I said together.

"Why do I even come here to hang out with you guys?" he asked himself, "Seriously."

I turned to Brett, "Wanna give him a call?" I asked. He shrugged before taking out his phone and calling Isaac.

Oops, shouldn't have done that.

"Spencer, what are you doing? Come on!" Ellie threw a pillow at him. She was ready but she wasn't supposed to leave yet so she was watching us play COD. She doesn't know Isaac is coming to pick her up.

See, we're helping with the date. Kind of.

"Why don't you just-" The bell rang and she stopped talking. "Are you guys expecting someone?" she asked us.

"Nope," we all replied.

She stood up and straightened out her dress before heading to the door. She opened the door, she was still barefoot, idiot. She was still looking at us while walking to the door. "Spencer, you should-" she stopped talking and turned around to answer the door, "Shit," she gasped before smacking her hand over her mouth. "Sorry," she laughed while stepping aside and letting him in.

"It's okay," he chuckled, "You look really pretty," he complimented.

"Thanks," she smiled while pulling on her shoes. Good old converse. Classy. My kind of girl.

Zach!

"I uh- I didn't know you're coming here," she said.

"Yeah, they called me, said I should come to pick you up," he said.

And here I thought he had brains but apparently, his head is hollow.

"Oh," she looked at us, "That's very nice of them," she said through gritted teeth, glaring at us.

"You ready?" he asked.

"Yeah, let's go," she said while grabbing her phone and purse.

"Have fun!" Brett called out, only for her to flip us the finger. She closed the door behind her and left with Isaac. "You look really pretty," Brett nodded at Spencer, mimicking Isaac.

"Thanks, man," Spencer nodded. I laughed while Brett just shook his head. "What do you think they're gonna do?" Spencer asked.

"Dinner, probably."

Where else is he gonna take her? He doesn't know one thing about her, how is he gonna know what places she likes and what places she doesn't?

"I'll be out now, I take it you two will wait for her?" Spencer sighed while standing up and stretching.

"Yup," I replied, still focused on the game.

"I don't know, I might just go to sleep," Brett shrugged. Spencer and I turned him, slightly surprised. "You're here for her," he smacked my arm lightly, "I can take a break." He stood up with a sigh and went into his room.

I looked at Spencer, absolutely confused. He just shrugged at me, showing that he was just as clueless as I was. "I'll see you later," Spencer said before leaving.

I stood up and went into Brett's room where he was coming out of the bathroom with his toothbrush in his mouth. "What was that?" I asked.

"What?" he asked.

"That," I chuckled, "What are you doing? You're not gonna wait up for her?" I asked.

"I don't have to, she's out. It's date night. I'm not her babysitter, neither are you," he replied.

"What are you talking about?" I questioned.

"We don't have to take care of her like that, she's not a kid and she can handle herself," he shrugged.

I just watched in confusion while he grabbed his sweatpants like he didn't just confuse the fuck out of me.

"Look, you're really protective of her, so it makes sense for you to have that as an instinct, but you're here now, I don't have to worry about her," he shrugged.

"You always have to worry about her. She's your friend too, isn't she?" I asked.

"Yeah, but she's more than a friend to you, you know that. I don't wanna get in your way," he replied.

"You're not. You have to be there for her, Brett. Always. You will, right?"
