Although I was facing the kitchen, I could see Nick from the corner of my eye. It was my way of keeping a close eye on him and on any sudden movements. He must have caught on to what I was doing because he let out a chuckle just as his bottle touched his lips.

"Can we just talk about the elephant in the room?" He asked just as the bottle came away from his lips. I turned my body further to the left to face him, I knew exactly which elephant he was referring to.

'Well, it's not Brittany.'

'She's more of a gorilla, if anything.'

I giggled lightly at my own joke, to Nick it just looked like I was giggling at his comment. So to keep up the facade, I nodded in agreement as my foot tapped along with the beat of the music.

It was interesting to finally look at Nick, really look at him. I never really took in his appearance the last time we had met. He wasn't a bad looking kid to be honest. When I looked at Nick, he reminded me of an all-good teenager, capital of the football team and all that jazz. With his blonde hair that just touched his ears tousled messily through his fingers, big bright sky blue eyes and fair skin.

He cleared his throat as his smile widened, showing a full set of perfect teeth. I gave him my full attention, waiting patiently, there was no way in hell I was apologising first because I knew I didn't do anything wrong.

"I'm sorry. It was a bad night for me, I was drunk and honestly didn't know what came over me. It's not an excuse I know, but I'm not normally like that." He said calmly while looking directly into my eyes. I had to admit, it was surprising to hear him acknowledge that he fucked up. Some guys would have beat around the bush, not Nick. He straight up owned it.

"Can we start over? Let's start over." He added, grabbing our half empty bottles of beer before getting up to walk into the kitchen. Confusion took over my features as I tried to figure out what the hell had just happened. I eyed him out as he grabbed two new bottles of beer but as he was about to leave, Jaxon grabbed him by the forearm to whisper in his ear. Nick leaned back to look at him before laughing and walking back to me, much to Jaxon's disappointment. I swallowed the lump in my throat as Jaxon looked over at me with worry, but his face soon disappeared as Nick came into view.

"Hi, my name is Nick. I'm a douchebag who got kicked in the balls by a girl." He said as he handed me the beer.

I laughed out loud before responding, "I'm pretty sure I kneed you in the balls. Nice to meet you, the name is Avery."

He shrugged his shoulders as he laughed, "Still, hurt like a motherfucker."

I patted the seat next to me as I laughed at his comment. I watched as he chuckled before sitting down next to me. Maybe the night wasn't going to be too bad.

We were both laughing uncontrollably at Nick's embarrassing story he probably already regrets sharing.

"Your poor grandmother! She's probably scarred for life now!" I said in between my laughter.

His shoulders shook as he chuckled a little, "Well, she now knocks on my bedroom door before just bursting it open. I think she's learnt that you can't do that to a fifteen year old boy."

"It's been three years and she now just avoids my room altogether." He went on to add.

I let out a laugh again as I pictured his grandmother's face throughout this whole ordeal. Walking in on a fifteen year old boy in the morning would not have been the greatest day for her.

"Too. Funny." I forced the words out in between laughs.

"It's only funny because it didn't happen to you."

I barked out in laughter again at his comment, "That's because I'm not a man who has that problem in the mornings."

We were both quiet for a few seconds before laughing again at my comment. I let out a giggled sigh. We had been chatting for almost a good hour and it was fun. It was genuine conversation which I appreciated, he didn't try anything, wasn't inappropriate in any way. To be honest, it made me forget that I was at a party until I looked around. My eyes landed on Drew who was talking to some girl, it was like he could sense my stare because at that very moment he turned to look at me with concern. I smiled at him to reassure him that I was fine. He winked at me before turning back to his conversation.

My eyes move to Jaxon, texting intently on his phone while Brittany sat next to him glued to the hip. Much to Lucas' dismay because his face said it all, he did not look pleased to have been stuck with her. She seemed to be the only one laughing at whatever she said she thought was funny.

"Ugh. I hate that bitch." I mumbled underneath my breath.

Nick chuckled as he looked at the direction of my stare, "Not many people like her. She's not the friendliest person on earth."

"Dont I know it."

My phone buzzed shortly after, I almost ignored it because no doubt it would have only been Nikki. Never in my right mind did I think it was Jaxon, who was literally sitting four meters away from me.

Sat, Apr 30, 12:43 AM
Jaxon: Meet me out back, please?

I looked up from the message to see Jaxon now looking in my direction. I switched the screen off as I swallowed the lump in my throat before nodding lightly.

"I'm gonna go out back for a bit of fresh air." I said as I smiled at Nick. He smiled back before nodding,

"You going to be okay?" He asked. I nodded in response as I got up.

"Thanks for tonight Nick. I had fun."

"Me too Avery."

I grabbed my clutch, leaving the beer on the coffee table before walking past the boys and straight out to the back door which was connected to the kitchen.

"Where are you going?" Drew asked, panic in his voice.

I looked between Jaxon and Drew before answering, "I'm just right here, I won't go far." Confused by the panic that took over my brother's face. He was about to say something but stopped when Jaxon patted him on the back before whispering in his ear. Not thinking twice I opened the door and walked out.

I looked around and smiled when I saw a set of swings, not resisting the urge I went straight to one and sat on it swinging lightly. It was the perfect position because my back was towards the house and my view was this beautiful swimming pool attached to the house.

"You and Nick, huh." His voice appeared from behind me.

"You and Brittany, huh?" I asked

He scoffed as he sat next to me, "Not if she was the last human behind on earth."

"Exactly."

The nights silence took over our conversation, with the cool breeze whisking my hair back making me close my eyes in appreciation. I opened my eyes looking at Jaxon who was already staring intently at me as he lightly swayed on the swing.

He licked his lips before rubbing them against each other, "Can we talk properly, just you and I?"

My eyes were on his lips as he spoke, he had perfectly shaped full lips and it was hard not to look at them when he licked them like that. He was very seductive without even trying.

"So, talk."

He got up from the swing before moving his leg over to the other side of the swing, straddling it so that he was now facing me.

"Can we drop the hostility for a few minutes?"

I let out a sigh before nodding my head slowly. I have been wanting us to talk about our issues but I get upset, upset because he just kicked me to the curb so quick when the going got tough.

'Maybe he has a reason?'

'See it from his perspective.'

I got up to mimic he's action and straddle the swing to face him, thanking the stars I decided on black ripped jeans otherwise this would have been awkward. We both sat there finally looking into each other's eyes, alone at last without the interference.

"I don't even know where to start." He whispered as he looked down in shame. I swallowed the lump in my throat as I watched on.

"I'm sorry for keeping Noah a secret." He added after a moment of silence.

"Did you find out it was Noah when I was in hospital?" I asked

He bit onto his bottom lip while he contemplated my question, before nodding slowly.

'Does he blame me somehow?'

'Is that why he doesn't want to be with me?'

"Dont."

I looked into his eyes in shock. Had I said that out loud? I know for a fact that I didn't say that out loud.

"You're blaming yourself. This is not your doing in any way."

I swallowed the lump in my throat, I didn't know how to respond to him. I forgot how perceptive Jaxon was with people.

"Before we continue Jax. I should probably tell you something about Brittany."

He creased his eyes in confusion as he waited for me to continue.

"The only reason why Noah found me so quickly was because of Brittany."

"What?! How?! Where the fuck is she?!" He barked out as he stood up from the swing. I quickly got up and ran in front of him, placing both hands on his chest. He stood merely a few inches away from me, he was that close I could see him clenching his jaw out of anger at the situation.

"Please, Jaxon." I whispered, my hands still on his chest. He stared between my eyes and my hand for a few seconds before nodding and resuming his seat. I stood there for a second or two to make sure he wouldn't jump back up, before resuming my seat on the swing.

I ran my fingers through my hair nervously as I tried to find the words, "She dug into my past and managed to get a hold of Noah. Told him where I was and was working with him."

"Why though? What does she get out of it?" He asked in confusion.

I let out a snicker at his comment, "She gets you, Jaxon. For an intelligent guy you can be pretty oblivious to the girls around you."

"My eyes are only focused on one girl, Avery." he whispered as he stared intently into my eyes. I opened my mouth to respond but he left me speechless. I didn't know how to respond, out of embarrassment I just placed my hair behind my ear and looked everywhere but at Jaxon.

He let out a tired sigh as he stood up to pull his phone out before sitting back down. He unlocked his phone and started to go through it before stating,

"There's something I need to show you, Avery."

I think it was the seriousness in his tone that caught my attention, when he had looked up at me that's when I nodded in agreement. Whatever he had to show me was clearly important, you could read it all over his face.

He looked up into my eyes, I watched as his eyes flickered back and forth.

"Please, don't freak out." He whispered. I nodded my head frantically.

"JAXON!"

We both jumped at the sound of Lucas's voice. Jaxon took in a deep breath before letting it out in a silence growl.

"WHAT, LUCAS!" He shouted as he looked at Lucas.

Lucas shrugged his shoulders apologetically, "Sorry man, you gotta move your car. Anthony needs to get more beer for the guys."

Jaxon tilted his head back before looking at me, "Give me five minutes!" He yelled out while maintaining contact with me.

"Wanna get out of here? Go to a coffee shop? I want this conversation to continue." He asked.

I bit on my bottom lip nervously as I looked into his eyes, I wanted to work this out with him. I knew we weren't finished but I wasn't going to jump back in this relationship with my eyes closed.

I nodded in agreement, "I'll go let Drew know."

He smiled in relief before clearing his throat, "I'll meet you at the front door."

We both walked inside before he went left and I kept going straight, past the kitchen into the lounge until I managed to find Drew talking to the same girl. I walked up slowly to them to avoid being rude. The girl's eyes moved towards me before smiling at me, Drew noticing her movement turned to look in my direction. I smiled awkwardly as I came up to whisper in his ear,

"I'm going to a cafe with Jaxon to talk." I whispered.

"Call me if you need anything. Okay?" He responded in a serious tone. I patted his cheek playfully as I smiled at him, he rolled his eyes before blushing which only made me laugh. After giving him a kiss on the cheek I walked out into the hallway. I looked around until my eyes locked onto Jaxon who was walking up the stairs.

What I wasn't expecting, Brittany walking up right behind him. I wasn't going to assume things, until Brittany turned to smile and wave at me.

'They were going upstairs together in a quiet bedroom.'
