"No, I'm not your mother.

But after I'm done with you,

you're gonna miss her like hell."
————————————————————

Adelaide had never been to the Hudson River Park before.

She suspected it looked much more attractive in the daylight or even at twilight as the sun set behind the river.

The teenager leaned against the railing, taking a deep breath as she looked across the river. Some of the lampposts were on so it wasn't completely dark. Regardless, tourists weren't exactly drawn to this dark, unexciting area of the park at 11 at night. She could see a couple boats still out on the waters, but they were already homebound.

She sighed. She shouldn't have come here. Her every single instinct was screaming that this was a terrible idea. But she wasn't here to hear what Graves had to tell her. She was only here to tell him for once and for all to stay the hell away from her and her family. This would be the last time she saw him. After this meeting, she was never going to get involved with him or the likes of him ever again.

She was done with her old life for good.

"I didn't expect you to show up," he said, coming to stand a few feet away from her by the railing. She didn't turn to look at him. From this far apart, they both looked like inconspicuous strangers looking at the river to a passerby.

"I came here to tell you I'm done," she said, fixating her gaze on the only boat still out on the water, "Don't ever try to contact me again. I don't want to hear what you have to say and I don't want anything to do with you, Graves."

"Ouch," he said and then chuckled, "I know you and I aren't bffs, but that one hurt, Rivers."

"I mean it," she snapped, "Stay the hell away from me."

He didn't say anything for a moment and Adelaide thought he was going to leave.

"You can't tell me you're not a little curious," he said, "If I know you, and I know you better than that Stark does, you're here because you want to hear my little secret."

Adelaide had never so badly wanted to break his nose. Not because he was being annoying, but because he was right. A part of her really wanted to hear what he had to say, if there really was anything in the first place. But then she remembered those nights in the hospital and the looks on the faces of the people she loved when they thought that they had lost her and she clenched her jaw.

Whatever he wanted to tell her, it couldn't be more important than her family.

"I don't care what you want to tell me," she said firmly and then she finally turned her head to look at him. "Stay away, Graves. From me. From my family."

Graves laughed, shaking his head to himself.

"You're adorable, sweetheart," he grinned and then sighed, looking back out at the river again, "But fine. If that's what you want. If you really don't want to know, I'll stay away."

Adelaide blinked. That's it? She honestly thought that he was going to put up more of a fight. She studied his face for a moment longer before pulling the hoodie of her jacket over her face.

She stuffed her hands in her hoodie and disappeared into the darkness.

—————

Graves reached into the pockets of his coat, pulling out the flash drive.

He looked down, turning it around in his hands. He wrapped his fingers around it again and clenched his fist. He looked back up at the river.

For years, he had done everything Lukov had asked him to like a little puppet. But where that old man didn't have a moral compass, Graves had bits and pieces of one left. And he knew that he had to try at least once to tell Rivers the truth. The truth that Lukov would never want her to know.

But if Rivers didn't want to know, then she would never know. This drive in his fist was the only proof left of his secret. The secret that Lukov had made him keep for the past 33 years. The secret that he had to keep from Rivers. The secret that wasn't even here anymore. So why did it matter that Rivers didn't know? And even if she did, she would never be able to do anything about it.

It was time to end it.

For once and for all.

So he gritted his teeth, raised his hand and hurled the flash drive into the Hudson River.

Before he knew what was happening, someone threw a sack over him and hit the back of his head with such a force that his vision turned blurry and he was instantly swallowed by darkness.

—————

Peter heard a brief knock on his window.

So he pulled his mask over his face, snapped his webshooters on and pulled up the window to his room to step out onto the fire escape.

"Hey," he breathed, adjusting to the colder weather outside. Karen turned on the heating system in his suit after detecting a drop in temperature and Peter instantly felt much better.

"Hey," Adelaide said, making him invisible too, "Ready?"

"Yeah," he said, pulling up the hologram from his wrist. He squinted at the map. "Looks like there's a robbery on the bodega on 162nd. And a shooting on 180th."

"You take the bodega, I'll handle the shooting," Adelaide said. Peter nodded in agreement. He was actually about the say the same thing to her.

"Meet me on the church on 164th afterwards?" he said, turning off the hologram. Adelaide fired up the Deathboard.

"See you there," she said and flew off.

"Yeah," Peter said, "...see you."

He shot a web and was off towards the bodega. He wasn't sure if he was reading too much into things or not, but it felt like Ada was still stressed about the thing that had been bothering her since earlier today. He hoped it wasn't anything too serious.

As the bodega came into view, Peter wondered if he should ask her again if she was okay. Maybe he could help. Or maybe she wouldn't want to tell him. Whatever it was, she shouldn't have to go through it all by herself. He wanted her to know that he was there if she needed to talk.

Meanwhile, Adelaide had the shooter in sight.

She stepped off of her hoverboard and hooked it to the magnets on her back on the suit. As silent as possible, she followed the man as he conspicuously walked down the dark street. He looked around before touching his jacket to make sure the gun was still secure in his holster.

"TADASHI, engage in combat mode," she said under her breath. She was angry and ready to kick some ass tonight.

You can't tell me you're not a little curious, Graves' voice rang mockingly in her head.

"Combat mode engaged."

You're here because you want to hear my little secret.

"Hey!" she shouted, making him jump in surprise. He immediately pulled his gun out and held it out in front of him, finger already over the trigger.

"Over here, hotshot!" she said and an illusion of herself appeared beside him. He immediately shot at the image, but the bullet went through.

Her illusion laughed and flickered away like a phantom.

"Wh-Who's there?" he said, waving his gun around. It was safe to say that he was rattled.

And while Adelaide could have easily knocked him out without lifting a single finger, she was in the mood to break a bone. Or two. So she shed off her invisibility and charged at him. He didn't see her coming until her fist landed square on his nose.

He stumbled backwards, but immediately regained composure and held his gun out again. Turning herself invisible again, she kicked the gun out of his hand and made herself visible again. With the same foot she kicked his gun with, she pushed his arm over and he fell to the ground. She kicked him in the chest with her boot and he groaned.

Suddenly, he rolled away and sprung back up.

Before he could even lay a finger on her, she marched up to him and punched his jaw. He pulled his fist back to hit her, but she just grabbed his fist, pushed it back and kneed him. He crumbled to the ground again.

"Give up?" she asked, circling around him and not even out of breath while he was groaning in pain on the ground.

"Never," he growled.

Suddenly, he reached out and pulled her foot. Adelaide smirked.

"Over here," she said from the other side and he looked up the see that his hand went through the ankle. The image flickered away like before and with much effort, he pushed himself back up to his feet again. He spotted his gun sitting over on the ground a few feet away and immediately made a run for it.

Adelaide made his gun invisible and made a fake one in her hands.

The man stopped in his tracks, looking around for his gun.

"Looking for this?" she asked, pointing the gun at him. His eyes widened.

"What the hell," he muttered, looking back at the ground where his gun used to be and then back at the glowing-eyed girl who was holding it out at him.

"Hands up," she ordered with a wave of the gun. He immediately put his hands above his head. "What were you doing with this gun?"

"None of your damn business," he snapped. Adelaide rolled her eyes.

"I'm the one with the gun here, amigo," she said, "Want me to put one in your head?"

"Fine!" he snapped angrily, "My girlfriend cheated on me with my brother. I was using that to put a bullet in both of their heads."

"Why do I have to get the crazy one?" she mumbled to herself, "I admire the effort, but that is very illegal."

"She should have thought about that before sleeping with my brother," he growled, "Give me back my gun."

"Boo hoo," Adelaide said, "Crazy is crazy. You're not leaving."

"Who the hell are you to tell me what I shouldn't and shouldn't do? My mother?" he shouted.

Adelaide laughed without humor, "No, I'm not your mother. But after I'm done with you, you're gonna miss her like hell."

She made herself invisible again and before he knew it, he was getting beat up from all sides. He didn't even know where to aim his fist. He felt pain all over. His face, his arm, his leg. Even his side when he felt her punch the literal air out of him.

Adelaide walked over and grabbed his gun off of the ground. She flipped it around and slammed it into the back of his head. He crumbled to the ground.

"Ada!"

Adelaide immediately tapped into her comms, "What? Pete? Are you okay?"

"I'm fine! There's a moving hostage situation on 73rd avenue. It's a black van going way over the speed limit, meet me there!" he said and it sounded like he was already swinging over there.

"I'm already on my way," she said, pulling the Deathboard back out. She tapped on the back twice and it immediately activated.

Glancing at the perp lying on the ground, she sighed.

"TADASHI?"

"Enforcement is one minute away," he informed her.

"Good," she grunted and flew off towards the emergency.

—————

"Good, you're here," Peter breathed as she began flying on her hoverboard beside him while he swung between buildings.

"My intel tells me that that black Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has two perps taking one hostage. Cops are already on their way, but if these guys take the hostage to a second location, we might never find them."

"So we need to stop them right here?" Adelaide breathed.

"Yeah," he grunted, "Any ideas?"

Adelaide spotted a police car ahead that was parked off to the side. There were no officers inside or around the car.

"I have one, but you're gonna have to trust me!" she shouted to him over the wind.

"I already trust you!" he shouted back. If they hadn't been chasing a couple perps right now, that statement would have meant a whole lot to her and she would have paused to thank him. However, that moment would have to wait.

"Follow me!" she said and steered her hoverboard downward towards the police car. She stopped by the door to the driver's seat and the Deathboard automatically flew up and attached itself to her back. She reached into her boot for a knife and shimmied the thin blade between the door frame and window. Just when she heard a click! Peter dropped down on the other side of the car.

Adelaide grinned at him and pulled open the door to the car.

"Ada, we are not stealing a cop car," Peter said firmly.

"I thought you were gonna trust me?" she said and slid inside before he could complain. She reached into the glovebox and found a screwdriver. "Bingpot."

She easily turned the car on and rolled the window down on the passenger's seat. She grinned up at Peter who was still too hesitant to get in the car.

"You coming bugboy or should I go wrap this situation up without you?" she said. Peter sighed.

"I'll come, but I'm not going to enjoy it," he grumbled as he got inside. Adelaide grinned.

"Trust me, you won't," she said and she saw from the side of her eye that Peter was giving her a questioning look.

"What's that supposed to mean?" he asked.

Adelaide shifted the gear from park to drive and then Peter immediately understood what she meant by her statement. He gripped his seat tightly, trying not to scream.

"Slow down!" he shouted.

Adelaide laughed, "What? Did you say speed up?" She slammed her foot down on the accelerator until they were going way above the speed limit in heavy New York traffic. Peter put his seat belt on and held onto whatever he could for dear life.

"How do you know how to drive a car!" he said with wide eyes as she easily maneuvered through the traffic. She was switching lanes so fast that even Peter couldn't keep up with his spidey senses.

"You'd be surprised how much I know, bugboy," she grinned as the wind from the open window ripped through her hair. "I see the van!"

"We won't be much help if we can't get there alive!" Peter shouted. His heart had literally never beat so fast. "We're breaking so many laws here!"

"Isn't it awesome!" she shouted back. The car abruptly veered right, throwing Peter back into his seat. "Hold on!"

"I'm trying!" Peter shouted.

The van sliced through an intersection just before the lights turned red and then turned the block, but Adelaide didn't let the light stop her and ripped through the intersection, almost crashing into a car in the process.

Suddenly, there were gunshots and Adelaide swerved the car in a zigzag motion to avoid get shot.

"Holy shit!" Peter breathed. Not much scared him, but Ada's driving was about to give him a heart attack. "They're shooting! Why are they shooting!"

"Well, they're not going to throw flowers at us anytime soon!" she shouted back, pressing down on the accelerator even more as she zigzagged between lanes and around all the cars. "Holy shit!"

The van suddenly made a u-turn at the intersection ahead and was now driving in the opposite direction, headed towards them in the lane beside them. Adelaide's eyes widened.

"Duck!" she shouted as she saw them aiming a gun at them. Peter did so immediately.

She slammed her foot down on the accelerator and turned the entire car invisible.

"Ada!" Peter shouted warningly.

"I've got this under control!" she shouted back, driving over the curb, "Trust me!"

Slowly Peter dared to sit back up in his seat. His eyes widened. They were coming up to the intersection but they were going way too fast to make a u-turn.

"Don't even think about it!" Peter warned.

"Too late!" Adelaide shouted back.

Before Peter knew it, they were at the intersection and Ada was slamming her foot on the brakes, forcing the car go from 60 to 0 in a second. The car began to skid, causing smoke to let up on the road from the tires, but she jerked the steering over just in time and then they were speeding down the street again, going zigzag through the traffic at an inhumane speed.

"Uh-oh..." Adelaide said as they were almost caught up to the black van.

The problem was up ahead at the intersection. The van was trying to run a red light but she could tell that they weren't going to make it in time.

"What's uh-oh? I don't like the sound of that," Peter breathed.

He was still recovering from that 180 turn she had just made. If he had known that she drove like a madwoman, he never would have gotten in this car with her in the first place. It was too late to get out of this now.

Suddenly, the black van sped through the intersection on a red light and escaped on the other side, but not before causing a three-car collision in the dead center of the intersection.

"We're not gonna make it!" Adelaide shouted as they raced towards the crash.

There was no time to hit the brakes.

"Hold on!" Peter shouted back. He opened his door. Adelaide's eyes widened.

"What the hell are you doing!" she shouted.

"Trust me!" he shouted back, his heart racing and Adelaide immediately did. "When I say to, swerve hard right, then left!"

Peter shot a web at the roof of the car to hold onto the car with and when they were just a second away from the crash, he dug his fingers into the asphalt and lifted the car up as hard as he could.

The car tilted onto its side and put all of its pressure onto Peter.

"Now!" he groaned loudly.

Adelaide jerked the wheel to the right and they just barely skid past the crash site at almost a 90 degree angle. And when they had passed the crash, she yanked the steering wheel to the left to get back onto the street and the car fell back onto all four wheels again.

"Woo!" she shouted, laughing as the adrenaline pulsed through her veins.

Peter pulled himself back into the car, closing the door. He threw his head back against the seat as he tried to catch his breath before turning to look at Ada.

"Holy shit," he breathed and when Ada glanced at him, they both began laughing in relief.

"Where have you been holding that one this whole time?" she laughed, speeding up towards the van.

"You'd be surprised how much I know," he smirked. Adelaide laughed, feeling her face heating up from the thrill.

"Touche," she said and when the van started to shoot at them again, she glanced at him, "Ready for a few more tricks?"

"Try me," he said and Adelaide grinned.

She sped the car up to go even faster. The engine was revving loudly as it wasn't used to picking up this much speed this fast. Adelaide wouldn't be surprised if the car fell apart any second. Hoping that the car would hold itself together, she pressed it to go even faster until they were right beside the van.

"You're up, bugboy," she said and Peter took that as his que to jump out of the car, shoot a web up at the van, and pull himself onto the roof of the van.

Once he had balanced himself on the van, Peter stood up to his full height.

"Here goes," he mumbled under his breath. He turned around so he was facing the back of the van and got in the position to run.

And then he broke off into a sprint and jumped off the van.

Before he landed on the ground, he shot a web at the giant skyscraper beside the street and another web at the back of the van as he hovered in between both of them. The van's tires screeched
