"I even invited you to my next cocktail party!"

————————————————————

11:35 PM

Adelaide had been moved to a different room where she was hooked up to some machinery that monitored her vitals and health.

She was still unconscious, showing no signs of waking up.

They had put her through a MRI machine and done several scans on her brain to pinpoint the problem, but the scans were still being developed. Meanwhile, Lukov had assigned doctors to watch her, giving strict orders that at least one of them was to be in the room with her at all times. At the moment, there were two doctors in the room with her. The air in the room was tense. The doctors were worried that if the girl were to die, so would they.

"Blood pressure's 90/60," the doctor beside her bed said tensely.

A look of worry overcame the second doctor's face as he wrote the numbers down. Their hope that this girl would make it out alive was slowly starting to slip away. All of her vitals were pointing downward. There was just no way she could survive. She would need nothing short of a miracle.

"There has to be something," the other doctor said, studying her face. His partner shook his head with a sigh.

"I wish there was," he mumbled, "The boss is not going to be happy about this." The doctor pressed his lips into a thin line. If the boss wasn't happy, no one was happy. And if this girl didn't wake up, there was going to be a massacre here.

"It's been thirty minutes. I have to go update him on her vitals and check the scans," he sighed, dreadfully glancing at the door. He looked to his partner. "...Unless you want to go?"

"I went thirty minutes ago," he said, "It's your turn."

The doctor dropped his head and closed his eyes, letting out a short breath. Then he grabbed his papers from the table by the door and begrudgingly exited the room. The other man then walked over to the monitors, reading them again for the hundredth time in hopes that something had changed. She was starting to run out of time. And if she didn't wake up...

"Hey doctorman," someone said from behind him, "mind telling me what's going on here?"

The doctor froze for a moment, his stomach dropping down. He swallowed before turning around very slowly. Instantly, his eyes widened. It was...

Iron Man.

"FRIDAY?" Tony said.

"His name is Barron von Dyke. He has a wife and two kids. He was fired from his last job for stealing drugs."

"So, Barron," Tony said, stepping forward. Barron took shaky steps back until the back of his legs hit the bed. Fear was evident on his face. "Didn't your parents teach you that drugs are not cool? You look like you're a good guy so I'm gonna assume you were peer pressured into doing them?"

"I-I w-was getting p-paid," he stuttered. Tony sighed, shaking his head disapprovingly.

"Just when I thought we could've been friends," he said, "How's this, you tell me what's the deal with her and I'll send you an invite to my next cocktail party. I'll even have The Ono just for you. Deal?"

"I-I'm s-sorry sir b-but I c-can't tell y-you," he said, pushing his ridiculously large glasses up his face. Tony clucked his tongue irritably.

"Don't make me do this, Barron," he sighed, raising his hand with the palm facing the doctor standing in front of him. The doctor flinched at the movement.

"S-Sir really I-I can't—"

"Come on, Barron, I thought we were friends," Tony said, waving his hand around and even extending it towards the doctor. He nearly jumped out of his skin at the sight of Iron Man's repulsors.

"I-I am u-under st-strict orders—"

"I even invited you to my next cocktail party!" Tony said, raising his voice to sound offended. The doctor flinched at the volume of his voice. He was trying his best to shrink his body as small as he could.

"I-I'm s-sorr—"

Suddenly, Tony slammed the doctor into the wall by his neck, all the joking and laughter gone instantly. The billionaire gritted his teeth in fury.

"You tell me right now what the hell is wrong with my daughter or so help me God."

The doctor's breaths had been cut short from fear and his heart was racing. Iron Man was putting pressure on his throat, making it harder for him to breathe so he gasped for air as he tried to cough out an answer.

"I said what did you do to her!" Tony shouted, putting more pressure on his throat.

"H-Her brain was...was wiped," he coughed, "B-But it couldn't han-handle the current a-and it went...went into a-a preservation state after it sh-shut down. If...If she d-doesn't wake up a-again in twenty-two hours then...then..."

"Then what!" he shouted, leaning even closer.  The doctor looked at the eyes of the mask, his own eyes masked with a terrible fear. Tony tried to pretend his own voice wasn't shaking in fear.

"She'll die," he whispered.

Tony let go of the doctor's throat and took a step back in shock. The doctor instantly crumbled to his knees, coughing uncontrollably.

Wiped? Shut down? Twenty-three hours?

He could feel himself slowly starting to panic as the information settled in. Slowly, he dared to look over at his Adie lying on the bed with her eyes closed as if she were just asleep. But her pale, gray skin was telling a different story. She was clearly losing the fight.

"Y-You can't take her," the doctor coughed.

Without even looking in his direction, Tony shot a beam at him and the doctor was thrown back against the wall before instantly passing out on the cold floor. Tony swallowed as he studied the condition Adie was in. Just the thought of losing her was sending shivers through his entire body.

He took a small step towards her.

In Sokovia.

"You said you heard my scream," she said, "My com was turned off."

"I can still hear you even if you turn your com off."

In New York.

"Hello?"

"Adie? Where are you? Do you realize how many times Pepper and I called you? You've been gone for hours, where are you!"

"I don't know."

"I'll find you, okay? Just stay put."

In Siberia.

"How did you find us?"

"I'll always find you."

It didn't matter what corner of the world she had needed him, he had always found her. So why would this be any different? They were tethered to a string together and no matter how far apart they tried to go from each other, they always found their way back. Tony had been naive to believe anything else.

A part of him had always wanted to take her back. But he had been stubborn enough to think he could live without her.

It took the kid's spider suit lighting up with gps coordinates on his hotel room ceiling as he sat on the bed with his third bottle of beer and old pictures of Adie for the billionaire to realize that he had made the biggest mistake of his life when he had walked away from her over three months ago.

Tony stepped out of his suit, closing the last distance to her bed.

No, Adie couldn't die.

The doctor had to be lying. There was no way Adie would die. There was still so much he had to say to her. What was he supposed to do if she died? No, no, no. He wasn't going to let her. He would do something. He would find the best doctor in the world, he would give her whatever she needed. Blood, kidney, heart, anything.

She wasn't going to die.

He dropped to his knees beside her bed and took her cold hand into his shaking one carefully. He looked at her hand for a moment before looking up at her once again. Swallowing, he brushed her hair away from her forehead.

This was the first time he had seen her in months.

"I leave you alone for a few months and this is what happens?" he said with a teary-eyed smile. He sniffled, cupping her cheek. A tear fell from his eye onto her face. He watched the tear roll down her cheek and disappear. Tony swallowed hard and suddenly it was hard to breathe steadily.

All the memories came flooding back to him in waves. The mornings where they woke up on the sofa after restless nights together. And day after day of living together, watching her face light up, seeing her cry, telling her that she was okay because she was in his arms. Of course he had missed her. He had missed her like crazy. If she had come back to him at anytime in those three months then he would have taken her in in a heartbeat. Except he supposed it was the Stark genes that made her too stubborn to do so. He smiled slightly, his eyes welling up with more hot tears. He wanted to see her face light up with a beautiful smile again. He so desperately needed to hear her teasing and making fun of him. He wanted to talk to her again, hold her, make her laugh. She had taken over every aspect of his life and when she had left, her absence had created a black hole in his life that sucked up everything that passed by. His life had turned into a disaster overnight.

So who cared that she had done what she had done? And who cared if coming back to her was going to be his biggest mistake? Who cared if she walked all over him and used him? Who cared if he had just been another mission to her? Who cared if she hadn't given a damn about him from the moment she had walked into his life? Because Tony didn't. Adie could say or do whatever she wanted and he couldn't push her away again. He was giving up every bit of dignity and self respect that he had because those things didn't stand a chance between him and Adie. She could ruin his life and he would welcome it with open arms.

No matter how hard he tried to deny it, Tony needed her back.

He looked down at her. She looked so frighteningly pale. The veins on her face were beginning to look brighter as her skin sunk in. He knew he had to get her somewhere safe and fast before they found out that he was here. Then he would find a way to keep her alive.

"You're going to wake up," he whispered, as the tears spilled over. He let out a shaky breath. His heart was thundering in his chest from fear. A quiet sob escaped him and he hurriedly bit back the ones that followed.

She was his daughter and now no one could separate them again.

He was here to stay. Always and forever.

After all, she had always been his emergency.

"I promise...I won't let you die."

—————

There was a knock on the door before it opened.

The guard stepped into the office, nodding at Lukov. He cast his eyes on the floor.

"Sir, we have a breach," the guard said quietly.

He stepped forward, handing the man a tablet with security camera footage from the building. Lukov stayed seated in his chair behind his desk and took the tablet into his hand. He studied the live footage with a frown. On the screen was the familiar Iron Man suit standing beside Adelaide's bed and the billionaire himself kneeling by the teenager with her hand in his.

Lukov sighed. He didn't want to have to face Tony Stark for obvious reasons, but he supposed it was inevitable. The whole purpose of letting Adelaide break ties with the billionaire on her own was so that he wouldn't bother them once Lukov took her away. In fact, he had done so not only to let the teenager push away Stark, but everyone else she had allowed into her life. And she had done so quite easily, as he had assumed she would. But he hadn't quite expected for Stark to come back. He thought that video in Siberia had made it abundantly clear why Adelaide could never live with him. She had served her purpose with Stark and now there was no longer a need for her to live with him. The Avengers had been eradicated and separated as per his plan. Adelaide's job with them was finished.

And now she was Lukov's again.

Or at least she was supposed to be. Now he was going have to do something he didn't want to have to do. He sighed again. Stark really shouldn't have come back.

"Initiate the protocol," Lukov told the guard, "I'll take care of Stark and then—"

There was another knock on the door before it opened. The doctor stepped inside, closing the door behind himself. He looked stressed.

"I'm sorry Sir, but you need to see this," the doctor said, stepping past the guard and handing Lukov the analysis of the brain scans. Lukov took it into his hands, studying it intently. He was expecting the worst. Never before in the history of using the machine had this ever happened to an agent before. It was unmarked territory with Adelaide's situation.

Upon studying the scans, however, things changed.

This wasn't the worst thing that could have happened. It wasn't what he had expected, but it was much, much better.

It was, in fact, quite brilliant.

"Oh this is perfect," he grinned, "This is too perfect."

He looked up at the guard with an unsettlingly large smile on his face. The guard shifted his weight on his feet, wondering what it was that he had seen on the brain scan that made him so happy.

"Fire up the chopper," Lukov grinned.
