"And, together, we will bring HYDRA back."

Peter was about to pass out from worrying.

"Pick up, pick up, please pick up," he muttered under his breath as he paced across the room with a phone against his ear. He ran his hand through his hair for the millionth time that night. "Come on, Happy. Pick up, damn it!"

"Peter—" Ned started, but Peter was hardly paying attention.

Ned glanced at Vivian sitting on the sofa beside him who just gave a worried look. Peter was a mess right now. He had been pacing the floor of Adelaide's apartment for half an hour now, trying to get in contact with Mr. Happy or Mr. Stark so he could find Adelaide with their help. Peter didn't have his suit or anything to assist him in finding Ada alone. She had left her phone here so there was no way to track her. She had told literally no one where she was going. So Peter knew he was going to need some external help with this. Regardless, there was nothing stopping Peter from spiraling.

He ended the call, trying to dial the number again.

"Happy, you have to pick up," Peter mumbled, listening intently to the phone ringing. It went to voicemail again. He ended the call, frustrated. He nearly threw his phone across the room in anger. "Why won't he pick up, Ned? I've called him a million times now! I don't even have my-my suit and-and—"

"Peter, breathe," Ned said, standing up and taking a step towards his best friend who had finally ceased his anxious pacing. He was standing in front of the tv, breathless.

"If he would just pick up, then I can ask him for help, but—"

"Peter..."

"—he's not even answering his phone and I-I can't do this without this help."

"Just listen to me—"

"I don't even know where he is right now or-or I would just go to him. B-But there's no way I can even find him or Mr. Stark. It's like they're both gone and-and I don't know how to find Ada alone."

Ned noticed that Peter was close to tears. They were right there, brimming his red eyes. He looked torn. His senses were everywhere. All he knew for sure was that Ada was somewhere out there and in pain and he didn't know where. He had literally nothing. Ned hated to see him like this. He looked like a mess.

"Peter, please calm down," Ned said gently, touching his arm. Peter jumped back.

"I can't calm down, Ned!" he shouted, "I can't! How the hell am I supposed to calm down when Ada is literally somewhere out there and she's in trouble! I can feel it! She's terrified and I can't do anything about it! I have no idea where she is. I don't know where to go! All I can do is sit here. How can I do nothing, Ned! She's out there because of—"

Slowly, Ned stepped forward and wrapped his arms around Peter in a tight embrace.

A second later, Peter hugged him back as the tears spilled over and he buried his face into his best friend's shoulder.

"I'm scared," Peter sniffled, his voice muffled and shaky. Ned nodded into his shoulder.

"I am too," he said, "But I know Adelaide would never go down without a fight."

"I should be there with her," Peter mumbled, "This whole thing is my fault."

"It's not. Stop blaming yourself. You never could have seen this happening."

"She came to me, Ned. I could have stopped her. But I pushed her away. She left because of what I said. I-I was wrong. Th-This whole time I was so-so wrong a-and I-I didn't understand her."

Ned had no idea what he was talking about and he could hardly make out what he was even saying with his sobs cutting through every other word. He decided to just let him pour his heart out and maybe he would feel better enough to think straight again.

"Sh-She wasn't my mistake," he cried into his shoulder, "God, I-I shouldn't have s-said that to her. Sh-She probably hates me a-and I can't even find her to a-apologize. I-I acted like s-such an a-asshole, Ned."

"It's okay," Ned comforted. Peter clung to him, giving up trying to control his tears.

"I hurt her so much," he cried, "Sh-She didn't deserve that. I j-just want to tell her I'm sorry, Ned, I just want to say I'm—"

He broke down into his shoulder and Ned swallowed, holding him tighter as tears brimmed his own eyes. He hated seeing his friend a mess like this. He was practically in pieces.

"Peter..." Ned said quietly, his voice shaky. Ned was terrified too, but he knew that he needed to be strong right now for his friend. "Please calm down. I know Adelaide is going to be just fine."

There was a beat of silence.

"I-If anything happens to her, I..."

"No," Ned said, pulling back to look at him. Peter hung his head low, unable to meet his eyes, "Don't think like that. She's going to be fine, wherever she is. You have to believe that. You cannot think negatively."

Peter swallowed, sniffling. His bottom lip was quivering. He looked up at his best friend with bloodshot eyes brimmed with tears that were freely flowing down his face.

"What do I do?" he whispered.

—————

Lukov was standing directly beside Adelaide as his men prepared to run the machine on her brain.

The circular metal contraption was securely fastened around her skull. Her limbs were held down to the bed with thick leather straps and there were a couple pacemakers attached just below her clavicle so the doctors could monitor her heart rate. Everything was ready.

It was just a matter of pushing the button at Lukov's signal.

At the moment, Lukov was calmly studying her unconscious face. The man admired the teenager's grit. She was stubborn and resilient which made for a good assassin. He had worked with many people over the years, but Adelaide always held a special place in his life. He had raised her, taught her, cared for her. She might not realize it yet, but she needed him. He was the one who had given her name a meaning, her life a purpose.

They had a bit of strange relationship. However, at the end of the day, without him, Adelaide was no one. And no matter how long it took for her to realize that fact, he was not going to give up. He had worked hard to make her the person that she was today and he wasn't going to let it go to waste. She was his most successful project.

And now, after having been away from her for over a year, he was finally going to get her back. Lukov looked up at the doctors and nodded curtly.

At his signal, they all immediately scrambled into their positions. One of them stood by the monitors, the other two by the interface that controlled the machinery circling the teenager's head. Once they were ready, they looked back at Lukov for one last confirmation.

He nodded.

The doctor flipped the switch.

Immediately, the power surged through the cables and into the machine around the teenager's skull. Her unconscious body jumped at the current going through her veins. Lukov smiled.

Another current jolted her body. Within a few minutes, she would be back to normal. She would be strictly under his command only. And then nothing could stop them from bringing HYDRA back.

A final jolt of electricity crackled through the teenager's body before the machine was powered off. The room was silent for a moment. Lukov took a step towards her. Only a few more minutes then she would wake up. Then his plan would quickly be underway and, soon, HYDRA would be back in control as it should be. Adelaide would forget Stark and everyone else. She would forget the past two years that she had spent apart from him and go back to being his obedient solider. Tonight would mark the beginning of big change.

A restart in Adelaide's life.

Normally, after a typical procedure of removing memories, the person woke up after about five minutes.

However, that was not the case here.

Even after fifteen minutes had passed, the teenager was showing no signs of waking up. Her eyes were still closed.

"What the hell is going on?" Lukov demanded to the doctors and guards in the room, his eyes trained on the teenager in the chair of the machine in front of him as if she could open her eyes any second. His gaze snapped to her monitors before turning to the doctor reading her vital signs.

She was supposed to be awake by now.

"W-We don't know, Sir," he heard the doctor saying. This had never happened before. Lukov gritted his teeth, stepping towards Adelaide sitting in the bed. His hand reached out, feeling for a pulse in her neck. It was faint.

"Why the hell isn't she waking up!" he shouted. The small room was silent.

He whipped around, marching towards the doctor and grabbing him by the throat. He shoved him against a shelf by the wall, causing things to rattle off and crash loudly onto the floor. He was absolutely livid.

"Why – isn't – she – awake!" he boomed in the doctor's face.

"I...I..." he gasped for air, "don't...know."

Lukov squeezed the man's throat until he felt the familiar crack underneath his hand and the man crumbled to the ground, now just a heap of bones. Still as useless as he was alive.

He turned around, but the teenager was still unconscious. He growled in anger as his eyes snapped to the other doctor. He was white as a ghost. Lukov glared bloody murder at him.

"S-Sir, her mind shut down. Sh-She couldn't t-take the current and her body t-turned off," the doctor rambled.

"Then wake her up!" Lukov boomed, shoving down a table filled with tools. They all clattered to the ground. The doctor stared at them with wide eyes and then swallowed, pushing his glasses up before he dared to look at his boss again. He had never seen him this angry before. This was a whole different level of rage.

"I-I can't, S-Sir. If she doesn't w-wake up on her own i-in twenty-four hours, th-then she'll...die."

Lukov stared at the doctor in disbelief for a moment.

And then he began laughing.

His laughter grew as he stalked towards the doctor. Lukov shot his hand out, gripping the doctor's shoulder. He flinched, practically shaking under the man's glare. Lukov leaned down until he was eye level with the doctor. He grinned maniacally.

"If she doesn't wake up in twenty-four hours," Lukov whispered, "then you will be dead as well. Understood?"

The doctor swallowed.

"Y-Yes, Sir," he stuttered. Lukov stood up straight again, patting his shoulder.

"Good," he said calmly.

"Make sure the place is secured!" Lukov shouted to the guards who immediately scattered into place. He turned away from the doctor, walking towards the teenager. He stopped by her bed, gently caressing her forehead. He couldn't lose her. Not ever. She was his most prized possession. He leaned closer to her ear.

"You will wake up," he whispered to her, "And, together, we will bring HYDRA back."
