FRANKENSTEIN
49 | Highway to Hell.

I could feel everything in me change. My heart pumped quick and loud, as adrenaline coursed through me. That was odd. My heart never, and I mean never pounded this fast. My body felt weird, warmer somehow.

I took a deep breath of air, and felt it flow through my lungs meaningfully. Usually when I breathed it was pointless, just air circulating through my lungs. Now though, it felt natural to breathe - as if I would suffocate if I didn't.

Birds chirped from around me and the air smelled thickly of the salty ocean breeze. I could feel myself lying on something soft, was it grass? With no hesitation my eyes flew open, assessing my surroundings.

Long grass was all around me, and it was quiet. Quiet, meaning there was no noise of the city, only the sounds of nature. I would recognize where I was from a mile away, considering I'd been raised in this place. I was lying in the grass of my backyard. Slowly, I stood up turning to face my back porch.

What the hell?

Looking down I was naked. I was standing in my backyard naked. A small yelp left me as I covered my body, looking around for anyone who could possibly see me. I almost slapped myself when I remembered how far away each house was from each other, no one would see me.

With a defeated sigh, I stopped covering myself - slapping my thighs irritated. I blushed tomato red when I noticed a male spirit looking at me with his mouth hanging open. Making it even more weird, I handed him an awkward wave as I made my way up to my back porch. The ghost let out a strange sound, before turning away shaking his head.

"Well that's just great." I sarcastically mumbled.

I knew exactly what happened, but I was confused as to why I was here. Naked.

Shouldn't I have been at the facility? My thoughts continued whirring as I opened the back door. Snorting to myself at my family's lack of keeping door's locked, I walked inside. The house was just as I remembered, homey. I could tell right away no one was home, as if my family was here 0 you'd no doubt hear them.

Unable to stop myself I began walking around my home, a large smile across my face as everything was just as I remembered. Once, I got to the kitchen my stomach seemed to growl loudly, informing me that the last time I had food was who knows how long ago.

Not bothering to find clothes I raided the refrigerator for something to eat. Taking a bottle Apple Cider out, I drank from it - my thirst far surpassing the need for a cup. Next, was the pantry. I wasn't thinking when I grabbed a bag of Cheetos and began stuffing my face. It wasn't until half way through, when I froze - realizing this wasn't meat.

Crap!

In a haste I tossed the bag of chips, to the clear other side of the kitchen stepping away from it as if it were possessed. Unfortunately, I didn't notice the table right behind me and my naked form slammed into it.

"Fuck!" I yelled, turning around my hand grazing a sharp knife which sat innocently on the table.

"Who leaves a freaking steak knife on the table?" I spit harshly, clutching finger which was bleeding.

However, my eyes widened upon what I saw leaking out. Blood, red gushing blood. It wasn't black, it was red - pure red. My face turned into awe at what I was seeing. That's when it really hit me. Death said I was gifted with life once more. Before with the serum I was basically a walking a corpse.

I had no scent, my blood was black, I didn't need to breathe, and my heart pounded way slower than average - the only reason it even pounded was because of the electricity I endured for the procedure. Why Death sent me home, I had no clue. I began running my fingers through my hair in stress, nearly passing out at what I felt. My hair, a lot shorter than it was before.

Wasting no time, I darted upstairs to the bathroom - looking in the mirror. Staring back at me was a replica of what I had left behind. It was the 'copy-cat'. For the first time in over a year, I wasn't so pale. I mean I wouldn't call myself tan, but I wasn't pale anymore - I had a bit of color on me. My hair was redder than before - redder than it had ever been. It was the color of inferno, a deep blazing red that struck me. It fell down my shoulder's in tumbling curls, stopping just above my breast. It wasn't too short, but noticeably shorter than before.

Bright luminescent emerald green eyes held my attention captive for a moment. My eyes had always been green, but never had the ever been so bright. I felt like I was staring at two glowing green emeralds for a few moments. I made an impressed face when I took in the fact that I was really back now. Jolene Emery Carson is back and alive.

With a shake of my head I knew I had to find out how long it had been. In quick strides I was downstairs dialing the number of Hadlee's cell phone.

"Hello?" I could hear the confusion in her voice, she was probably wondering who was calling from the house when no one was suppose to be home.

"Hey." I said, hearing a gasp in return.

"Jolene! What the hell? Where are you?" She frantically asked.

"At home. I kinda woke up naked in the backyard, and I'm alive now." I picked at my nails.

"Everyone's searching around the building for you. Death and you disappeared right after Patrick agreed, I'll tell everyone your home, and we'll come." Hadlee said.

"No! I need time to think, send me the directions and I'll drive Maverick's car up there. It's only thirty-minutes, right?" I asked.

"Yeah, but are you sure you're stable enough? I mean what do you mean by 'alive'?" Her voice flowed.

"I'm fine to drive, plus I'm sure Maverick is dying to see his car." I paused, "By alive, I mean like I'm normal again. My heart beats, my blood's red again..." I trailed off.

"Really?" She sounded happily surprised. "Wait, can you still make stuff move with your mind?"

Deciding to test out the theory I turned to the remote sat on the coffee table. Unlike before the remote didn't shoot across the room, but it did move a bit. That was something I'd need to work on.

"Yeah, but I don't think I have speed or strength anymore." I informed her.

"Hmm, we'll talk more when you get here, okay. I'm going to go tell everyone you're on your way."

"Okay, I love you, Hadie." I said, using a nickname.

"Love you too, Jo." She said, hanging up.

With a large smile I ran back upstairs, to my room. It was just as I had left it. An unmade bed, a few clothes scattering the floor, even my old Samsung was charging by the window seal. I cringed thinking that it had been charging for over a year and a half. Looking down to my nude form, I wrinkled my nose at the dirt spots along me from lying in the grass for too long.

After taking a rather replenishing shower, I threw on my clothes. My own clothes that were in my dresser. I couldn't be happier.

A simple 'AD/DC' tee was thrown on, along with a rather worn jean jacket of mine. Ripper jeans, and my beat up converse felt so natural that I just smiled. Unsurprisingly, my new short hair was a lot easier to manage than my long, instantly making me fall in love with it.

I wanted to go back to Volterra with Aro. I loved my family, but right now I just needed to breathe. Something in me suggested, that we were probably leaving today. Carefully, I got together a duffel bag full of my own clothing and shoes. Beat up favorite books of mine were also tossed along in there. As I threw the first Harry Potter book in there, my eyes lit up. I knew exactly what book Aro and I were reading next.

I hesitated when I thought of how Aro would react to this. My blood would no doubt be appealing now, and I knew eventually he would need to turn me. Even if I couldn't smell it myself, my scent had obviously returned. With a shrug of my shoulders, I firmly held my head in place. I would go into this strong.

Just as I began zipping up my duffel bag, a picture caught my attention. On my wall hung a simple family portrait, taken when I was ten. It was of us all lying in the grass looking natural. Mom read Donica a book, Maverick and Hadlee were arguing - and dad was cheering them on, and I was in the background talking to some unseen presence. I laughed at that knowing I was talking to Rosette.

In an instant the picture was in the bag, and I was leaving the room. This wasn't the last time I'd be here, I would be here again - hopefully relatively soon. On my way out, I grabbed the Cheetos and Apple Cider - relishing in the fact that I could eat the Cheetos.

Once I was in Maverick nice silver car I smiled revving up the engine. It had been too long since I last drove. 'Highway to hell' was blasting through the speakers at loud rates as I sped down the highway, following GPS to SHARE's headquarters.

Not gonna lie, I was like Laura when it came to driving. I 'accidentally' speed more than half the time, and tend to get into an accident of some kind every other month. Yeah, I should probably work on that. I sang loudly, driving with one hand, drinking cider in my other. Okay, I'll admit from some else's view this probably looks terrible.

By the time I was allowed entrance in, and pulling into the parking lot - the sun was down. It was early night, around five. With a smirk I decided against walking inside, I would make everyone come to me.

"Asking nothing! Leave me be, taking everything in my stride!" I loudly yelled, sitting on the hood of Maverick's car.

I proudly ate my Cheetos, happier than anything.

"Get your ass off my baby!" Maverick yelled, running outside a huge smile lighting up his features.

"Make me, dick!" I yelled back, a smile of my own forming.

He scoffed shaking his head turning around toward the door he came out of. "Yep, she's back!"

True to his word, Maverick came over and lifted me off the car in a hug. A few seconds later, Hadlee's body clashed with our's, along with Donica. They had effectively turned this into the cheesiest group hug in history.

As soon as we let go, my attention was taken to my father walking outside, my mother on his arm - Patrick, Carlisle, and the Volturi with them. Laura wasn't there odd enough.

"Oh, thank god some real music." My dad sighed, in mock relief coming over and whipping me around in a hug.

I couldn't stop myself from squeezing back, resting my face in his chest. As we let go, he mischievously smiled rubbing my head, making my hair go everywhere. I scowled in return, trying to fix it.

"Not a dog, dad." I said, just as my mother gave me one of her own hugs.

I smiled against her soft form, pulling her closer. No words were spoken, not that there had to be - the love in the air was obvious. As soon as she let go, I turned to my uncle.

"I'm sorry." I lamely said, lookind down.

"I know you did not just apologize." I could vaguely hear my dad in the background.

"It's me who's sorry." My uncle and I made up by hugging.

With a smile I turned to the one and only Carlisle.

"Hello, my name is Jolene. It's great to meet you." I playfully held my hand out.

Carlisle actually let out a small laugh shaking his head. Without hesitation he pulled me into a hug. I hugged his cold form back, not bothered by the cold. As soon as he let me go, I made it a point to turn back to my family.

Looking to Aro, who's eyes scanned over my form with a delighted look in his eye. I could see Felix taking a deep whiff of the air, his eyes directed to me a knowing look. It was apparent that all the vampires here had smelled my blood, and my scent. Ignoring that, I smiled back at my family pointing to Aro.

"This is the man that I am one day going to marry, and be with forever." My inside joke didn't go unnoticed, as Dora and Felix both let out chuckles.

Taking determined steps to Aro, who gained a large grin on his face I reached up wrapping my arms around his neck. "I love you." I told him, firmly.

"I love you, forever - my sweet." He breath fanned against my face.

Finally, our lips touched in a passionate kiss of fiery love. After only a few seconds, Maverick's voice interrupted.

"AAAGGHH, I think my eyes are burning!" He yelped, falling to his knees clawing at his eyes.

I pulled away, sticking a fierce glare on my brother.

"I agree with that statement." Caius lazily stated, speaking for the first time.

Both Alec and Felix snickered, making Dora roll her eyes. She didn't hesitate in flickering over, pulling me into a hug. "Your true look suits you well, though I am curious to see what you'll look like as an immortal." She smirked.

I gave a nervous smile back, allowing Aro to pull me into his chest. He gently ran his fingers through my newfound 'short' hair. With a deep breath, I turned to my family.

Bluntly, I said the words that had been on my tongue for a while, "I'm going to Italy."
