Jimmy and I stood in front of the officer, producing the small bit of evidence we had gathered. "We have reason to believe she's been abducted," I explain, pushing Hailey's laptop across his desk. "This should be all the evidence you need."

Jimmy took over, telling the officer of the man who had chatted with her online and the incident at the diner. "Are you positive she didn't go with him of her own accord?" the officer asked when all the details were given.

I immediately tell him how freaked out she was when she realised he had found her. "I'm sure he took her when she was walking to work," Jimmy explained, "She never showed up." The officer took notes of our findings and finally seemed to take Hailey's disappearance seriously.

"We will find your friend," he reassured us. I sighed with relief as a small part of the weight I had been carrying was lifted from my chest.

Walking out of the station, Jimmy placed his arm around my shoulder and pulled me close. "Things are going to be okay," he tells me for the thousandth time. It is only with the police finally participating that I can allow myself to slightly believe these words.

I cannot help but feel guilt for not doing more to stop Hailey from talking to this man. I am aware she is an adult and capable of her own choices but she had always been inexperienced with men. Perhaps the fact that Christopher gave her positive attention fueled her desire to continue talking.

A tear slips down my cheek and I quickly wipe it away to ensure Jimmy does not see. I need to stop being weak. I need to find Hailey.
