Harlow \ Phoenix | Other people

Staring at the screen with wide eyes I was indeed speechless.

After twenty-five days of no contact Phoenix was looking back at me just as speechless. Black hair cut low on the sides. Hazel eyes like his aunt and cousin. He was handsome and his name fit him perfectly.

What do I do?

Should I hang up and say he froze? Should I ask him why he hasn't called me? Should I be pissed? Should I be happy?

I honestly didn't know what to do!

"Harlow." He pushed the front of his hair back.

Forcing myself to swallow I looked up to his Aunt Justine. Arms around her son she smiled at me with a look in her eyes that I didn't like.

It was the look of hope and possibilities.

There was nothing like that for Phoenix and I. He was a Marine! A Marine that I have never met and didn't plan on ever meeting. Why would I need to meet him? We were just two people that were looking for someone to talk to and we found that. I also found Timara and Phoenix already had Corey so there was no need for us to continue. He had already thanked me for finding his aunt's number and so did his aunt.

No need to continue.

Putting on the smile I give the everyday customers at Glamour I looked back to the phone. "It's good to see you Phoenix. You look great and it seems that you're finally on land and I'm really happy for you but I have to go."

"That's Harlow?"

"Stop Prichett she -"

"Hey Harlow!" A guy of my same skin tone turned the camera to him. "I'm so glad you weren't catfishing Derman. I was really worried that you were but here you are looking just like your pictures." He looked to his right his smile falling from his face before looking back to me.

"Um Corey, I have to - Corey?" I called out to the now black screen.

"Don't be mad at him." I heard him say as if his mouth covered the speaker.

"Hello? . . . Hello?" I tapped the screen making it light up showing that the call had ended. "He hung up." I apologized handing back over the phone to Dylan.

"It's okay. Nicky said they're going to party before getting back on ship." Dylan smiled while his mother shook her head.

"Do you know where he is now or he still can't tell?"

"Greece I believe. I don't know how long or where to after that but that's where he is for tonight at least. You two looked speechless to see each other. Was that the first time you've seen each other?"

"Through video chat, yes."

"Nicky is never speechless. He must really think you're beautiful." She smiled at me squeezing Dylan's shoulder. His cheeks turned a light pink again as he looked down at the floor.

"He's beautiful too - well handsome . . . He's a handsome guy. It must run in the family." I smiled at Dylan once he looked up. "Thank you for letting me use your phone."

"You're welcome."

Saying goodbye to Aunt Justine and Dylan I hurried out of the store trying to keep my mind from over analyzing the two seconds of conversation I had with Phoenix after twenty-five days.

Once in my car I angrily dug through my purse trying to find my keys forcefully trying to shove them in the ignition without looking and constantly missing the keyhole. "Don't be mad I at him. Don't be mad at him? Don't be mad at him! Why the hell not? He stopped talking to me!"

Corey was crazy to say such a thing!

I had every right to be upset but I was passed that point. Phoenix made it obvious that he didn't want to speak with me anymore and that was fine. I had a life before him and I have a life after.

Driving home I took out my new dress and accessories. Hanging the dress up I stepped back and looked at it. Sexy was exactly what I needed to feel right now and this dress would give it.

Timara came over after work with her own dress and accessories. Helping out with dinner I told her what happened with Phoenix's family.

"Then his friend said I shouldn't be mad at him but didn't explain why. Does that make sense to you because it doesn't to me."

Timara shrugged. "Maybe he was going through something and didn't know how to tell you so he just avoided it oooor," she smiled like a Cheshire cat, "he's coming home and doesn't want to tell you."

"For twenty-five days?" Timara shrugged again. "He's in Greece anyways from what his aunt said so no surprise pop ups here."

"What if she was covering for him?"

Shaking my head I put the food in the oven. Phoenix was just a guy that I never met and had a crush on but it was time to get over it and if he ever called I would give him the benefit of the doubt to explain . . . or maybe I shouldn't.

"Harlow?"

"Huh?" I looked over to Timara as she smiled at me. "What?"

"You were thinking about him weren't you?"

"I -"

"Don't even try to lie. You totally had that dreamy look in your eyes. Why don't you add him on Skype? That way, the ball is in his court."

"The ball has been in his court . . . I'm done talking about him. Let's talk about you. We need to get you a little boo."'

"I needed to get out of parent's house first. That's the most important thing to me right now."

"Did you put in an application here?"

"I did but the waiting list is like seven months."

"Damn."

"It's okay. I know something will come up soon."

"You can always crash on my couch if you need a break from your parents. Oh but speaking of parents, my folks want to meet you."

"I'd love to meet your dads! When?"

"We could do like lunch tomorrow if you're free."

"Sounds great!"

"I'll let my Papa know and you can sleep here tonight if you want."

Timara checked on dinner while I texted Papa about having lunch tomorrow and within thirty seconds of hitting send Dad and Papa's contact picture showed on my cell as it vibrated. Answering the call I put it on speaker.

"Hi Papa."

"I don't know why you insist on texting your Papa when you know he zooms in on every word then gets mad because he can't see."

"Hi Dad." I laughed hearing Papa yell in the background about the phone being stupid and the keypad being too small for his fingers.

"So, tell me more about your friend and what she likes to eat. Papa can whip up anything."

"I don't really know she eats everything. Hey Timara, what do you like to eat?"

"I'll eat whatever."

"Don't tell Papa that Dad."

"Oh I know." He chuckled. "He'll end up making a little of everything but I will ask if she's allergic to anything." Timara shook her head and I gave the information to Dad. "Okay then. I will see you ladies tomorrow then."

"Bye Dad. I love you."

"Love you too Baby Girl."

"I love you too Harlow!" I heard Papa yell.

"Love you too Papa!"

Hanging up the phone Timara turned off the oven placing dinner on the stove to cool. "I think your parents are awesome."

"They are." I agreed smiling.

"And I'm sure Nick would think that too."
