I woke up when I heard arguing. I open my eyes and Maddox is yelling at Dr. Harris who is listening to Maddox with a slight grin. He lets Maddox continue then holds up his hand and gently speaks over him. Maddox is still ridged with tension but he seems to calm down.

Dr. Harris starts walking to my bed and smiles when he sees I'm awake. "How are you feeling today?"

"Better now that I know the baby will be okay." I say returning his smile.

"Yes, I'm sure that scared you. It's not really common to bleed in the first trimester, it only happens in about one third of all pregnancies. But everything is going well with the baby, you'll be fine." He says, patting my shoulder.

"Thank you. What is Maddox upset about?" I ask him.

"He wants me to extend your bed rest, but I don't see the point." He answers trying not to grin but failing.

I raise my eyebrow in question to Maddox. "I just don't want anything to happen. Just a few days." He looks away guilty.

"I'm fine, Maddox. It will be okay."

Maddox gets a phone call and holds up his finger and walks out of the room.

"God, he is so hot. I don't know how you can stand it. He reminds me of a caveman." Dr. Harris says secretly.

My eyes get wide and I laugh. "I know, tell me about it. I gave him my virginity after knowing him three days."

"I can tell, looking at him, it was great. It's those damn glasses and he's always so attentive to you. I'm a hundred percent jealous. I want someone like him." He whispers wistfully.

"You want a caveman?" I ask jokingly.

"Honestly, I don't care what he is, as long as he looks like that."

I laugh again and I see the door open. Maddox holds the door open for Aunt Mary, grandma, Uncle John and J.J. I smile at them and they smile back.

"So, you had a scare, huh?" J.J. says.

"Yeah, but everything's fine now. Thanks for coming." I say as I get hugs from everyone.

After we talk for about an hour everyone leaves and I get my discharge papers. Dr. Harris must have caved to his crush, Maddox, because it says, 'Bed rest is encouraged for another twenty-four hours.'

We get home around five and Maddox insists I get in bed and rest while he orders food from an Italian restaurant he loves. So here I am watching T.V. in bed waiting for Maddox to come in to get me.

The next day I go to all my classes that I have on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I get up early to make it to creative writing on time. We get an assignment to write a story of our choosing. I leave class and go to art history. Art history was great and even though my hand is cramped from writing it was a lot of fun. I go sit under the tree I was under the other day and pull out my folder finding all my Monday class syllabuses to find my professors office hours. I need to explain why I missed class and let them know I may need to miss future classes because of doctor appointments. I have talked to all my other professors today before class started. They understood and didn't seem to have a problem with it, as long as I keep up with the course work.

I wrote down Professor Miller's office number and his hours then the rest. All of them have office hours tomorrow so I guess I'll wait and talk to them before or after classes tomorrow.

"I thought you'd be here." I hear Professor Miller say and I see him sit down like on Tuesday.

"Hi. Actually I needed to speak with you, but I was going to wait for your office hours."

"Okay, what's up?" He asks grinning.

"It's about why I missed your class yesterday."

"Yeah, I was curious about that." He says amused.

"Well, I was in the hospital, I-"

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah, it's just...I'm pregnant and I started spotting after my last class on Tuesday. I thought that I miscarried and kind of had a panic attack. But everything is fine. It just happens with some pregnancies."

"I feel like every time we talk, you overload me with new information and it’s always shocking." He says seriously.

"I'm sorry. But this baby has put us through a lot all ready and I may need to miss some classes in the future. I just wanted you to know why." I explain.

"Is this why you’re getting married?" He asks curiously.

"No, I don't want to get married for a while. The baby has nothing to do with it."

"So a long engagement."

"Yep, that's the plan. At least until I'm out of school."

"That's a good idea. So, I take it the baby was a surprise then?"

"Yeah, a big surprise. But it's not an unwelcome one." I say smiling to myself.

"Maddox is a very lucky man. I will admit I've heard the rumor about you being pregnant. I just didn't think it was true."

"Gosh, how many rumors are out there?" I ask exasperated.

"There's more to the pregnancy story. People are saying you did it on purpose or that he did it on purpose. I can tell that the first one isn't true."

I don't know what to say, I can't believe he'd listen to gossip. He's a teacher, but then again I'm sure he can't help but hear the things people are saying.

"Neither are true, it just happened. I guess if we need to blame someone it would be both of us. But neither of us set out to make a baby. People around here really need to get hobbies."

He laughs, "I have to agree with you there. All I hear is gossip about everyone. I think girls make up about ninety percent of my classes. I hope it's not contagious. I feel like one of them, telling you what I've heard. Sorry, I shouldn't have said anything." He says looking ashamed.

"I asked. I should just try and get over the fact people are talking about us. I'm sure they'll move on soon, we're not that interesting." I say.

"I doubt it, no-"

"Kitten." I hear Maddox interrupt.

"Hey, what are you doing here?" I ask confused but happy.

"I wanted to make sure you were doing okay." He answers looking at Professor Miller.

"Maddox, this is Professor Miller, I was telling him about the baby and why I missed his class." I explain.

"I've heard a lot about you." Professor Miller says standing up and holding out his hand to Maddox. Maddox shakes his hand and I notice the tension.

I look at Maddox, he's in one of his expensive charcoal suits, he really does look like he was born to wear them.

I snap out of it and answer Maddox's previous question. "I'm fine, Maddox, you didn't need to come all the way over here. You could have called and asked."

"I needed to see you." He says sitting next to me and kissing my lips.

"You worry way too much. You'll go grey soon if you don't stop." I tease.

"Oh, well you all ready agreed to marry me, you can't back out now." He says smirking at me.

Hmm... Maddox with salt and pepper hair. I bet he'd look good, like George Clooney.

"You’re picturing me with grey hair, aren't you?" He asks amused.

I blush. "Maybe." Maddox leans in and cups my cheeks brushing his fingers over my cheeks and kisses me deeply. I hear a throat clear and I see Professor Miller still standing there but looking away, clearly upset. I would be, too, if my student started making out her boyfriend in front of me. I blush even more.

"Sorry." I apologize.

He looks back at me and smiles. "I'll see you in class tomorrow?" He asks.

"I'll be there." I nod.

"Bye, Hadley." He replies smiling and walks away.

"Bye." I say but look to Maddox who is growling lowly at the professor’s back.

"He wants you." Maddox says and I scoff, the idiot.

"No, he doesn't." I deny. Thinking of Dr. Harris, I'm sure Maddox thinks he likes me too.

"Yes, he does."

"I bet you think Dr. Harris wants me too." I say, smiling at him.

"I'm sure he does." Maddox replies flatly.

"Maddox, Dr. Harris is gay." I laugh at his expression. "He definitely has a thing for you though." I add continuing to laugh.

"Is that why that fucker is always smiling at me? I thought he was making fun of me."

"Yep, you’re his caveman. He wants one of you and is very jealous of me."

"I'm happy he's gay." Maddox says, after a few seconds of deliberation. "Although, that has nothing to do with Professor Dickhead. Trust me, he was basically challenging me when I shook his hand. Stay away from him."

"He's my professor, how do you want me to pull that one off?" I ask.

"Just don't meet with him outside of the classroom."

"Maddox, you’re overreacting."

"Hadley, please." Maddox pouts his lips. I smile at his attempt to look sweet and innocent. I kiss him and he pulls me on to his lap. By the time we break apart we are breathing heavily.

"Let's go home." He says huskily.

"I have class to get to." I say getting off his lap and standing up.

He groans and stands up. "I'll walk with you."

By the time we make it to my class, I think I've had a hundred death glares and a hundred hate stares.

Maddox kisses me and watches me walk into the classroom, great the glares continue. I sit next to Vicky like I did last time and she smiles at me.

"I heard you were making out with Maddox for twenty minutes before class." Vicky teases. How does she know about that? I turn red. "I guess it’s true." She says laughing.

"It wasn't twenty minutes." I say in self defense. Which makes us both laugh.

After class, I head to my car. I see Lauren on my way but she pretends not to see me. I don't mind, I don't need to talk to her today. I get to my car and I can’t find my keys, shit! I must have dropped them. I look in every pocket of my backpack, they are definitely missing.

"Hey, nice car, Ms. Davis." I hear Professor Miller say coming my way.

"Thanks. I wish I could be driving it right now though. I lost my keys." I explain pulling out my phone.

"I'll give you a ride. Come on, get in." He offers, motioning to his huge black Dodge pickup.

I text Maddox that I'm on my way home but I lost my keys. I am hesitant to tell him who's giving me a ride home but I do anyway.

I walk to the truck. "Are you sure?" I ask. "I don't want to get you into any trouble."

"You won't, it’s just a ride. It’s fine." He says holding the door open.

I climb in as my phone starts ringing. Its Maddox. "Hello."

"I'll come get you. Stay there."

"I'm all ready in the truck, it’s not far. I'll be there soon, don't worry." I watch as Professor Miller climbs in the truck.

"If he says or does one thing that makes you feel uncomfortable, tell me." He says angrily.

"I will. I'll see you soon. Love you."

"Love you, too. I'll be waiting outside for you." He adds then hangs up.

"Thanks for the ride." I say as we pull out into traffic.

"It’s not a problem, where do you live?" He asks.

"The condos on Mason Street. Do you know where that is?"

"Yeah. That's upscale." He states eyeing me curiously.

"Well, Maddox built them and lives in one of the units. But we are moving soon. We found a house near here that I fell in love with."

"Your parents don't mind you living with someone? Not to mention, the engagement and baby."

"My parents are dead. That's why I'm here. I moved in with my aunt and uncle. There's not much they can say, I'm eighteen." I answer.

"I'm sorry to hear that, but you’re so young. To start everything so suddenly, I can't imagine how scary it must be for you."

"Maddox helps. He's always so self assured. It's his confidence in us that calms me."

"He's never hit you or anything like that has he?"

I am taken back by his question. "God no, never." I answer. "Why would you ask that?"

"He does that street fighting. And he doesn't have the best reputation regarding his self control. I'm just worried he could get mad and hit you. You’re so small, there's no way you could stop him."

"He would never hurt me. People don't know him like I do. He may have a temper, but trust me he'd never raise a hand to me." I say with conviction. It's irritating that people think so little of him. He deserves more respect than that.

We pull into the condo parking lot and I see Maddox standing by the door. "He doesn't like me, does he?" Professor Miller asks.

"I don't think Maddox likes any guy I talk to. Thanks again." I say as we come to a stop next to Maddox, who opens my door for me and lifts me out. "Wait, my bag." I say as Maddox was about to shut the door all the way. He opens it back up and Professor Miller hands it to him. They don't say anything and Maddox shuts the door and we walk inside.
