"What problem?" Maddox yells.

"With her left ovary. She has a small cyst, it could be potentially serious or it could go away on its own. We won't be able to find out for sure until later. But this could cause you to lose the baby." He says sympathetically.

I can feel my tears fall and I look at Maddox, he looks worse than I do.

"Please listen. That is the worst case scenario. This could just mean that you’re still ovulating and that this egg that caused the cyst could go away and nothing will happen. But we need to be cautious, if you’re ever feeling any abdominal pain especially on the left side then come in immediately."

"All right." I say. I look up at Maddox and he is crushed, I've never seen him look so helpless.

"It should go away in three months which is the time that every doctor advises that you begin telling family and friends." He adds.

I nod, knowing this is because pregnancy can be a delicate thing and most miscarriages occur during the first three months. I hope for not only the sake of our baby, but for Maddox as well, that this cyst just goes away. I don't want to see a grieving Maddox, devastated and helpless is horrific enough.

"Let's move on to the baby." Dr. Harris says.

I look to the screen and I see a little ball like spot. That's our baby. For the first time since finding out I'm pregnant I feel happy, elated even. That is our child, I cry even harder. Maddox kisses my head and I look up to his face, he's smiling.

"I love you." He says sweetly, his eyes shining with love.

"I love you, too." I say, my voice tight with emotion.

"This is the baby, there isn't a heartbeat yet but that will come four days after you were supposed to have your menstrual cycle and I want you to come back in then." He looks at his charts. "Since you were supposed to start on Saturday let's make it for next week on Friday."

"Okay, great." I reply. I want to see the heartbeat, it's exciting.

"You can sit up now." He says holding out his hand. But Maddox helps me up. I can tell Dr. Harris finds Maddox amusing so I just roll my eyes giving him an apologetic smile and he smiles back.

"Do you have any questions for me?" He asks both of us.

"I want to know what you’re looking for with the cyst and how you'll know what kind of cyst it is." Maddox speaks first.

"We'll be able to see if the cyst has grown. If it does grow, it will ultimately cause a miscarriage. If the cyst does not grow, then there really is nothing to worry about." He answers looking back and forth between the two of us.

"Won't the tests you just did tell you what kind of cyst it is?" Maddox questions.

"No, the pap won't detect the cyst. They rarely come back abnormal because of a cyst."

"So we wait." I say quietly.

"Yes, it's a waiting game. Just take it easy, don't strain yourself and get lots of rest. I'm going to give you a prenatal vitamin prescription to pick up. Take them with food and plenty of water. Be sure to start drinking lots of fluids, staying hydrated is very important."

"Thanks, I will." I say.

"I'll see you both next Friday."

"Yes, thank you." I reply and Dr. Harris leaves the room. I put the sheet behind me and Maddox picks me up off of the table.

"I didn't want you to hop down." He explains when he sees my confused face.

If he needs to play the overprotective boyfriend I'll let him, but only until next Friday. I hug him and he wraps his arms around me. I snuggle into his chest and breathe him in. This is the father of my child, this is who I'm supposed to be with.

"It will be okay, Maddox." I reassure him.

"I know. I just need to protect you until we know for sure." He says talking into my hair.

"I know, I understand." I rub his back, then go to change in the bathroom.

When I step out of the bathroom Maddox is pacing the tiny space. I wish I could do more for him but I think we both are going to be worrying until Friday. He stops pacing when he sees me and smiles sheepishly.

"You know I'm going to be a wreck until we know for sure about this, right?" He says seriously.

"I know, me too. But we'll get through it. I'm starving, let's get something to eat."

"Yeah, let's drop your prescription off and then eat. What do you feel like?"

"Pizza."

"Your gross pizza?"

"Yep."

"I guess I can stomach watching you eat that." He teases opening the door.

I go to the check out desk to make the appointment and pick up my prescription slip. Maddox stands behind me while we wait for the woman in front of us. He wraps his arms around me closely, his hands on my stomach and rests his chin on my head. This poor guy is going to lose his mind before the end of this week. I don't know how he's going to get through until next week.

The woman leaves and I step up to the counter and tell her my name. She doesn't move and I can't tell if she's staring at me or Maddox. Finally, she snaps out of it and we get our things and head out.
