The Small Fighter

by Bongcayao, Lorea Claire C.

Once upon a time, nestled in the heart of Japan, stood the resplendent Palace of Chiba, a majestic structure boasting a vintage allure. King Haruki Yui and Queen Honoka Yui, guardians of its timeless beauty, sought to preserve its historic charm.

However, lurking within the palace's enchanting façade were malevolent spirits—remnants of bygone wars. Unconcerned initially, the King and Queen's tranquility was shattered upon the birth of their firstborn, Princess Hana Yui. The nocturnal disturbances caused by the spirits intensified, with a particular fixation on the princess.

One fateful Saturday night, the princess vanished, ensnared by the evil spirits. The Queen, devastated, fell ill in the wake of this tragedy.

Determined to rescue his daughter and protect his realm, King Haruki summoned Riku Minato, a loyal and formidable servant. Entrusting Riku with the task of bringing Kintaro, a renowned small but potent fighter, the King promised the highest honor among his guards upon success.

With dreams of achieving a prestigious rank, Riku embarked on a two-day journey to the mountain of Matsumoto, Kintaro's dwelling. Navigating through the treacherous landscapes of the Shikoku River, the green Furano field, and the deep Karuizawa Lake, Riku endured the arduous trek armed only with a scant ration of water and bread.

As night fell over the green Furano field, Riku rested before pressing on at dawn. His journey continued until he reached the shores of the deep Karuizawa Lake. Finding a small boat, he crossed the lake to reach the mountain's towering peak.

After hours of searching, Riku discovered Kintaro peacefully eating beneath a tree. Delivering the King's command, Riku successfully convinced Kintaro to accompany him to the Palace of Chiba.

Once at the palace, Kintaro fearlessly confronted the malevolent spirits, banishing them with his unmatched combat skills. Locating Princess Hana, he swiftly rescued her and returned her safely to the King and Queen.

Overwhelmed with gratitude, the King rewarded Kintaro with a basket of goods, while Riku received acclaim for his loyalty and obedience. From that day forth, tranquility reigned, and the evil spirits dared not approach Princess Hana. Harmony was restored, and Kintaro returned to the mountain of Matsumoto, content in knowing he had once again used his strength and power to help the people of Japan.
