The Secret of the Min

by Elaine S. Munda

In the prosperous land lived a wealthy couple named Chul and Cha. Despite their affluence, they yearned for a daughter to complete their family. Their prayers to the sacred Chiri mountain were answered by the mountain deity Sansin, blessing them with a daughter named Min.

The family lived harmoniously until one fateful day when Min, now a teenager, ventured into the forest and failed to return by nightfall. Anxious, Chul and Cha organized a search party, miraculously finding Min sleeping beneath a tree. However, strange occurrences followed.

Their farm animals inexplicably perished, prompting Chul to investigate. When hired men reported seeing Min take on a horrifying form, Chul dismissed their accounts, blinded by his love for his daughter. Even his son, Gi-Su, faced disbelief and expulsion after sharing the same tale.

Desperate for answers, Gi-Su sought refuge in the hills, encountering a wise Buddhist monk who explained that a fox spirit may have assumed Min's form. Armed with three mystical bottles, Gi-Su returned to confront the unimaginable.

Upon arriving home, he discovered the horrifying truth – Min had devoured their parents and all the farm animals. Undeterred, she greeted Gi-Su with eerie cheerfulness, asking what he wanted for dinner. Crafting a plan to escape while she cooked, Gi-Su found himself momentarily tied up by Min.

As she was distracted, Gi-Su managed to free himself and sprinted away, pursued by Min, who seamlessly shifted between fox and human forms. In a desperate bid for escape, Gi-Su hurled a blue bottle, creating a river that Min crossed effortlessly.

Undeterred, he threw a second bottle, conjuring a thorn bush that impaled the fox but failed to halt her pursuit. With one final chance, Gi-Su unleashed a fiery inferno with the red bottle, and the fox spirit burned in the flames.

The triumphant flames marked the end of the supernatural menace, leaving Gi-Su to grapple with the harrowing reality that unfolded in their once-idyllic home.
