Evanescence of Yin

by Javier, Abby Joyce R.

Gu Ning, a woman with jade eyes capable of penetrating and sensing yin and yang, accompanied her boyfriend, Leng Shaoting, on a visit to her deceased parents' graves. As they strolled through the cemetery, their attention was drawn to a group whispering about raiding an ancient tomb nearby.

"I heard that there's an ancient tomb nearby. Want to raid it?" one of the individuals suggested eagerly.

"Good idea! I'm sure that we will get lots of valuable antiques there. We might even find some jades there, hopefully, a king's green jade," another member chimed in with greedy anticipation.

Gu Ning and Leng Shaoting, overhearing their conversation, discreetly hid.

"What do you say? Do you want to follow them? As they said, we might find valuable jades and antiques there. There might be yin around that tomb. Yin can cling onto objects, right?" Leng Shaoting inquired.

Gu Ning simply nodded, and they stealthily trailed the group of would-be tomb raiders.

As night fell, the couple waited for the raiders at their designated meeting point, concealing themselves until the group arrived.

"Do you have the materials with you?" one of the raiders asked.

"Of course! All we need to do is go inside and raid all the treasures," responded another, eyes gleaming with hunger and greed.

The raiders began to move the massive rock covering the tomb's entrance.

Gu Ning utilized her jade eyes to scan the surroundings, revealing numerous rooms, aisles resembling a maze, and an abundance of yin. Leng Shaoting, sensing the heavy yin, remarked, "This place is a disaster. I can already feel the hatred from here. The things the dead inside experienced are definitely heavy and gut-wrenching."

Agreeing with him, Gu Ning observed, "This will be a long night. I wonder if the tomb raiders know what they're putting themselves into. This place is covered in black energy. Well, let's brace ourselves then."

Undeterred, they entered the tomb after the raiders.

Navigating through the cold and dark tomb, Gu Ning's jade eyes provided her with a clear view, but the eerie atmosphere gave Leng Shaoting goosebumps. As they followed the raiders, a grumbling sound nearby caught their attention.

"What is that?" one of the raiders asked nervously.

Ignoring the sound, the leader directed the group, "Let's just take the right side."

Luckily, Gu Ning believed, they had chosen the correct path.

While walking, Gu Ning spotted a mysterious silhouette, resembling a woman burned to death, carrying a long sword.

"Can you see that?" she asked Leng Shaoting, expressing her concern.

"I'm not sure what that is, but that's surely not human. It carries a lot of yin. That must be the protector of this tomb," Leng Shaoting explained.

The sound of dragging echoed as the strange woman approached, causing the tomb raiders to halt. The ghostly figure appeared, holding a long sword.

"What do you think you're doing here? Are you here to steal from me? You have the guts to steal from an empress like me? You will never succeed!" the ghostly woman's eerie voice echoed.

Gu Ning suspected that the ghost was the vengeful soul of the tomb's empress. Intrigued, she approached the ghost, proposing to help retrieve what was stolen.

As the conversation unfolded, Leng Shaoting dealt with the raiders, administering an elixir to erase their memories of the tomb.

After the ghost received her stolen painting, she vanished, leaving behind gratitude.

Gu Ning, along with Leng Shaoting, cleansed the tomb, deciding to hand over the recovered antiques and jade to the authorities. Exiting as morning dawned, they reflected on the night's events.

"That surely took too long for us to finish. Thankfully, we're not harmed or anything. Shall we go, Ning?" Leng Shaoting asked, and they departed hand in hand.
