North and South

by Rachel Madeleine Gamit

Once, there was a country where people lived harmoniously. Everything was peaceful, and everyone worked well together, helping each other for the betterment of their country.

Their King, Kim Minkyu, had twin sons with his wife, Queen Kim Bora, named Kim Sora and Kim Minho. The twin brothers grew up as the best of friends, the pride and joy of their country. However, one day, the King fell seriously ill, forcing them to be trained to be the next leaders of their country.

Leaving their childhood behind, they started training at a very young age. Their mother, Queen Bora, always stayed by the king's side, taking care of him. She was obliged to let her sons go and be trained, even though it meant being separated from them for a long time.

Years passed, and the king's health did not improve. On the twins' 18th birthday, they returned home to the palace to celebrate. The King was overjoyed, and for a few days, their presence made him feel better.

His heart warmed hearing his sons' stories about their training and journey. However, he knew he had to choose one to succeed him. The decision weighed heavily on him, as he loved both of his sons equally. The mother felt both happiness and sadness because she knew what had to be done.

After a few days, the father's sickness worsened. Instead of wishing him well, the officials below him forced him to choose a successor, as their opinions were split. Half wanted Sora, praising his bravery and strength, while the other half favored Minho for his intelligence and wisdom in decision-making.

The officials shared their statements and left the final decision to the king, who was too sick to decide. A war erupted among the officials and the people, each supporting their favored crown prince. Families perished, and the war showed no signs of stopping, even with the ailing king unable to intervene.

The deities were displeased with the ongoing war, and unable to stop it himself, the queen fervently prayed for their help. In the midst of the war, a thunder struck the land, splitting the country in half.

A massive crack in the land emerged, and since the king couldn't decide on the next ruler, he chose to split the country into two, each to be led independently by their favored crown prince.
