Lucky Red

by Joana Mae B. Aninias

A long time ago, in the heart of China, there lived a boy named Jiang Huang. His father, Zhao Huang, was a diligent man, while his mother, Liui Huang, showered him with love and care. One day, the family embarked on a journey to the Great Wall of China, a place that left young Jiang mesmerized with its beauty and history.

Capturing the moment, they took a family photo to cherish the memories. "Mom, Dad, from now on, this place is my favorite," exclaimed Jiang. During Chinese New Year celebrations, Jiang would revisit the Great Wall, his go-to tourist destination, armed with his favorite fish crackers.

After enjoying his snack, Jiang mischievously jumped out to startle passersby, making it an annual tradition. On one occasion, he encountered an old woman in a red dress selling food to tourists. Excited to scare her, Jiang leaped out, causing the woman to drop her basket with a loud crash.

Startled by his own actions, Jiang ran, realizing he had acted impulsively. Pondering the incident at home, he questioned why he had run and why he felt scared. Reflecting on his behavior, Jiang decided to stop scaring people, recognizing that it brought negativity to their experiences at the beautiful site.

Unbeknownst to Jiang, the old woman attributed her good fortune to the red dress she wore, thinking it scared him away. From that day forward, Jiang refrained from making fun of others, realizing the importance of respecting people's enjoyment at such a magnificent place.

As time passed, the old woman never encountered Jiang's mischievous pranks again. Consequently, on Chinese New Year's Eve, the tradition of shaking rattles, lighting firecrackers, wearing red, and making noise continued as a symbol to frighten away evil spirits.
