Daryl wasn't expecting the special gift that Rick, Merle and Carl surprised him with for the holidays. In honor of Betty White and the Betty White challenge for her birthday I decided to write a fic about adopting a pet. If you can go out and support a shelter, rescue, or adopt a new friend! Modern AU setting.

Daryl was unsure what to think. When he and Rick started seeing one another he hadn't thought they'd get this far. Now they were celebrating Christmas at his brothers house.

"One last gift Daryl." Rick smiled, Carl was sitting with Merle excited to see Daryl open the last present. Rick stepped out of the room he opened the back door and a puppy came running in, their collar a bow. Daryl's eyes grew wide as the dog jumped into his lap.

"Oh my..wait is this the little shelter pup I've been watching online?"

"Yes he is." Rick couldn't help but smile.

Merle smiled seeing his brother get licked in the face. Carl giggled as Daryl picked up the wriggling puppy, Carl sat beside Daryl now.

"Was this a good gift?" Carl asked.

"More than a good gift, our family needs a dog." Daryl grinned as he kissed the pups wet nose. "You're perfect."

The pups tail wagged, it's three legs kicking in the air. Merle smiled, "When Rick came to me about it I knew we had to get him for you. Plus he's like me, a little different but just as special."

Merle had lost his hand in the war, the veteran smiled as the three legged pup was set back on the floor and ran around. "He runs really well."

"He's adorable." Daryl smiled. "Thank you really. I..I didn't expected any of this, thank you."

Rick couldn't help but smile, Carl hugged Daryl and ran around with the pup. The little thing barking and rolling around getting belly rubs from the family.

Daryl couldn't help but feel lucky, when Rick had met him he was Rick bottom. Drinking at the bar and hardly making ends meet. Rick had brought him back from the bottom, helped him realize he could be better.

Carl did too, he wanted to be a good boyfriend to Rick so he could help raise Carl too.

Now they were building their family, they had a dog for their boy, and it was like Daryl's kid already. When he had seen him on the rescue shelters home page he knew he had to have him, he wanted to give him a home, a loving home that wouldn't let his lost leg get in the way.

The pup barked and child laughed as they played together. Rick sat beside Daryl grinning, he was happy to add another member to their family, the pup fit perfectly.

Carl cuddled up with the pup, they were laying on the couch now. Merle, Rick, and Daryl were cleaning up after Christmas.

Daryl was in the kitchen while Rick and Merle were in the living room.

"You've done good by me," Merle said to Rick, "I didn't see my brother having a life like this. I'm glad he has, you did that."

Rick smiled. "He's my special man. Carl loves him, and that little pup is going to be so loved."

Merle smiled. "Yeh he will."

Daryl stepped passed them, he sat on the couch with Carl after he asked him too. Daryl smiled as the kid cuddled into him, Rick and Merle finished cleaning and stopped in their tracks smiles on their faces at the scene before them.

Carl was cuddled into Daryl, they both were asleep. The pup curled up in their lap, their breathing were synced. Rick couldn't help but smile at his little family.

"That little pup sure did complete your family." Merle elbowed Rick with a smile. "You did good."
