Chapter Sixteen

“Do you want us to visit you?” Jessica asked from the other line.

“No,” I sniffed out before I let out a loud sneeze, “Go enjoy the dance.”

“But…” she trailed off, I could hear the hesitation in her voice.

I sighed before massaging my temples. Against all the odds, my cold stayed up until Friday night making me miss the Winter Dance.

“Enjoy the night without me,” I told them, “And tell me all the details tomorrow.”

“Celeste,” she paused for a moment before I heard shifting from the other side, and I realized she put me on speaker.

“Look Cel, we’re your best friends and if you’re going to miss this then we’re all in this together,” they said making me thank the heavens that they gave me three angels.

“You’re going to make me happy if I know my best friends enjoyed the night I worked hard for,” I convinced them.

“Are you sure?”

“I’m sure,” I confirmed, “Now go find some guys, dance with them, and tell me all the details tomorrow.”

They all muttered some words of defeat, “Fine.”

“Now I’m hanging up,” I said, “I’ll talk to you guys tomorrow.”

We said our goodbyes before we finally ended the call. I placed down my phone on the coffee tabled before lying back down on the couch with a blanket draped over me.

“Alright,” Jazzy came in with a steaming mug of hot chocolate, “I have some good news and some bad news.”

I groaned as I took the mug from her hand. “And what’s that?”

“Good news, your parents called,” she informed me, sitting on the couch by my feet, “Bad news, they won’t be able to make it for Christmas.”

A deep frown found its place on my face. I guess my parents were too busy to even show up for the Holidays. I shouldn’t be shocked by it; they even missed my birthday, sending me an expensive gift as an apology but I was still sad.

I felt my tears well up as I bit my lip, holding in a sob. I don’t know if it was because of my parents or because I was missing the dance but I suddenly burst into tears. Jazzy quickly scrambled up and walked to my side, hugging me.

“Don’t cry, Celeste,” she cooed, rocking us both back and forth, “I know they have a good reason for it.”

Work – it was the only reason they have. They were always working, I forgot what they even looked like.

She handed me a tissue and I used it to wipe the stray tears. I plucked another one from the tissue box for me to blow my nose that was once again clogged with snot.

A familiar buzz broke us apart, and Jazzy let out a frustrated sigh, “Somebody’s at the front desk, I’ll go get it,” she said, walking out of the room.

Minutes passed and Jazzy didn’t return. I presumed she was only working on the stove or cleaning something up. I let out another sneeze before groaning at my condition.

“You look horrible,” A new voice said making me jump up.

I gaped at the sight that greeted me. There stood Drew Everett wearing a tux while his arms were crossed over his chest, and an amused smile gracing his lips.

“Drew!” I quickly scrambled to my feet, the motion itself made a shot of pain run to my head.

“Ouch,” I whined, sitting back down on the couch, “What are you doing here?”

“A little birdie told me that the president couldn’t attend the winter formal,” he chuckled, walking towards me, “I think she at least deserved a dance of her own for her hard work.”

My heart sped up at his words and my face morphed into a one of awe. This must have been the sweetest gesture anybody has done for me.

“Okay then,” I smiled, standing up slowly, “Let me just freshen up.”

I walked upstairs to my room and when I passed a mirror, I mentally cringed at my appearance. Drew was right, I looked horrible.

My hair was struggling out of the messy bun I placed it in, my nose was red, and from the huge sweater and sweatpants I wore, I’m sure I looked like a big mess.

I quickly raced to my bathroom and washed my face, brushed my teeth and ran a brush through my frizzy hair. I went to my closet and pulled out the dress I planned to wear on the dance. It was a black dress that had a sequined bodice, and had feathers at the hem of the skirt.

Funny thing was, it’s my mother’s dress. The same dress she wore when she and my dad met.

I dusted some makeup on so that the redness of my face would calm down, and curled my hair. I smiled at myself at the mirror before grabbing my pair of strappy heels and going back down the stairs.

My head was still throbbing but when I caught sight of Drew, the pain subsided as if he was my medicine.

“You took long,” he stated and I rolled my eyes. No matter how sweet he was, he would always be Drew.

“Sorry,” I mocked before approaching him. Jazzy had a camera in her hands and gestured for us to come closer with each other.

“Jazzy!” I whined, covering my face with embarrassment.

“What?” she asked innocently, “Come on.”

Drew rolled his eyes before wrapping an arm around my waist. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t from my fever that I was blushing so hard. I looked to the ground bashfully then I heard the clicking of a camera.

“Aww,” Jazzy cooed as she looked at the picture she had taken, “I’m going to leave you lovebirds now.”

I’m pretty sure it’s no longer normal for me to get any redder. She gave as a teasing wink before skipping out of the room.

“She’s a weird one,” Drew mumbled next to me and I couldn’t agree more.

“So,” I started out, turning to face him, “What have you done to Drew Everett? The real Drew wouldn’t be nice enough to visit me.”

He rolled his eyes before approaching the pizza box that was set on the coffee table. How come I didn’t notice that when I came in?

“I’m not heartless, you know,” he said as he opened it and I smiled at the pepperoni delight. He took one plate and sat a slice on it before handing it to me, “Sorry if it isn’t the fancy catering you planned on.”

It’s more than I could ever wish for. I picked the pizza up before taking a big bite out of it. Just the fact he made an effort is perfect enough in my eyes.

“You know I was actually hoping for a dance,” I joked but he instantly perked up. He grabbed my phone and started scrolling in my playlist.

He hooked up my phone on the speaker and the familiar tune of a guitar suddenly filled the room. Drew walked up to me and held out a hand for me to take.

“May I have this dance?” he chuckled, his eyes shining with amusement.

I placed down my plate of pizza before wiping my hands with a piece of tissue then placing my hand on top of his, “Yes you may.”

You know I’d fall apart without you…

Hunter Hayes’ voice started singing the sweet song that has been on constant replay on phone for the past week. It was my favorite and I made sure it was played at the dance; Drew knew about this.

I placed my hands on his shoulder as his were settled on my waist. We started to slowly sway to the gentle music, and I closed my eyes, savoring the moment.

“Who knew you had a sweet bone in your body?” I teased, trying to lighten up my mood. I have a feeling that this will some point lead to something much more intimate.

“I’m not heartless,” he repeated his statement from earlier. I rested my throbbing head on his shoulder.

“I know,” I whispered. He was far from it; he had been nothing but kind and patient with me. Instead of seeing me as that spoiled bitch, he gave me a chance and befriended me. He treated me like a normal person, he didn’t see me as a rich heiress who had popular friends and a grade that could get her into any college she wanted.

I know that we argue all the time, and thankfully, we always make up. No matter what, we found ourselves forgiving each other. It was normal for us to fight, we were fire and rain, summer and winter, north and south but we got along most of the time.

He rested his chin on top of my head and held me with all the care in world. In that specific moment I knew. I doubted it from the start but right now, I was completely sure.

I, Celeste Graham, am falling for Drew Everett. My complete opposite, yet he felt so right for me.

No matter how much I tried to deny it, I liked him. He was the one who was here with me, making me feel like I was special. Not Lucas, not Jessica, not Jazzy, not my parents, but Drew.

I wanna make you feel wanted.

 ---------------------------

Yes, I know it was short but give me credit here, this was a super fast update! The song that they danced to was Wanted by Hunter Hayes (aaah I love him) which is located at the side. Celeste finally admitted it to herself, yipee!
