Chapter 18

For the last few days, the entire male population looked at Cassandra differently as she walked the halls. Some merely stared at her a few seconds longer. While others took the plunge of asking her out. She quickly denied every one but the attention felt good.

Cassandra took a seat in her first-period class, she began to hum to herself. Vicky came into the classroom, her usual face that was covered in makeup to hide her dark circles were not there that morning. She held her book bag in one hand and her coffee in the other.

Cassandra's eyebrow raised when she looked to her friend, "didn't sleep well?"

"That's an understatement. Anyways, did you see the fight this morning?"

"No, what fight?"

"Between Sebastian and some sophomore." Cassandra's stomach fell when she heard Sebastian got into a fight. She got up from her chair, "where are you going?"

Cassandra's eyes widen, and she sat back down. "Is he okay?"

"Yeah, he kicked the guy's ass. He's in the principal's office right now." Cassandra clenched her fist.

"Why did he even get into a fight with him?"

Vicky shrugged her shoulder, "no idea."

~

Sebastian sat in front of his principal. He had never been to the principal's office yet. "Sebastian, why did you attack another student?"

Sebastian, when he first came to school, was in a sour mood. That morning, he was reminded of the hundred dollar gift he brought for Cassandra that she would never accept. Even though they were broken up, he still wanted her to have it.

That morning when he was walking into class, he overheard some sophomores saying very sexual things about Cassandra, which led to a fight and Sebastian in the principal's office.

"I got into a fight," he muttered

"Yes, you did. Now tell me what happened?"

Sebastian sucked in his breath, "he was saying some very unfeminist things about a girl I know," Principal Riveria eyebrow raised. It was a known fact, she was a feminist that encouraged the protection of all women.

"Really?"

"Yes, and I just couldn't let him get away with it."

Principal Riveria crossed her legs, "okay, I'm a fair woman. Instead of suspending you like I was originally going to do. You're going to have in-school detention for the day."

In-school detention was like suspension but without the comfort of being home all day. He would be forced to be in a room with a teacher learning all day without the break of lunch with his friends. "Okay," he grimaced.

"Good, now go to room 412." The bell rang as Sebastian got up from the chair and walked into the hall. The halls were filled with students who had no problem staring at him. Sebastian readjusted his bookbag on his shoulders and walked up the endless flight of steps. As Sebastian took his last step up the stairs. Cassandra took her first down, they made eye contact.

Cassandra looked at Sebastian's now more chiseled jaw and sucked in her breath. His lip was busted and there was a slight bruise on his cheek. Sebastian couldn't feel it, so it didn't matter much to him.

Cassandra opened her mouth and closed it. She continued walking down the steps.

"Cassandra," Sebastian shouted which made her stop in her tracks. The last time they talked was a week ago when she called him a dick for sleeping with Malia.

Cassandra turned and looked up at Sebastian. She sucked in her breath, "I heard you got into a fight."

"Yeah," he trailed on. "I did." Cassandra took another step down the stairs. "Cassandra," he said again. "Um...happy fifteenth birthday."

Tears began to well up as she turned to look at Sebastian. Months ago, they planned to steal his mom's car and drive out to the lake and hang out until the sun came up. Now, she didn't want to see his face ever again.

"I brought you a gift," he added. "If you wouldn't mind, I would still like to give it to you."

Cassandra turned towards Sebastian after the word gift came out of his mouth. She opened her mouth then clenched her fist. "Why don't you give it to Malia." Cassandra continued to walk down the stairs leaving Sebastian to watch her walk away.

Sebastian tightens his hold on his book bag and went into the classroom. It was if darkness looked over him and the darkness was called regret.

~

Cassandra arrived home and was met with a room filled with balloons, with the words Happy Birthday plastered over them. "Happy birthday baby," Michelle shouted when Walter opened the door.

"Mom," she smiled. "You didn't have to do all of this."

Michelle handed her daughter her balloons, "I did. It's your fifteenth birthday." Michelle put her hand on her daughter's cheek. "God, I remember the day you were born. It was the worst ten hours of my life. Your head was much about the same size it is now with a much smaller body."

Cassandra chuckled, "mom."

"I'm serious, it was the worst pain in the world. I mean that head," Walter held Michelle's waist. In his hand was an envelope, he smiled.

"I know we just officially met a little while ago and it might be a while before we develop any sort of relationship. But, I got you something, I talked to your mother, and there's a certain singer coming to Arizona in a few weeks that she thought you would love to see." Cassandra's eyes widen when he put the envelope in her hands.

"Walter," she opened the envelope, and an inaudible scream came out of her mouth. Cassandra. "oh my God," she yelled as she jumped into his arms. "You guys are the best."

Walter let out a chuckle, "I got you three tickets. One for you, Aurora, and one of your friends." Aurora's eyes widen when her father uttered her name.

"Dad, I-"

"Aurora," Cassandra screamed. "This is amazing, we're going to have so much fun. I-I have to call," she stopped. "I have to call Vicky, and see if she wants to go." Aurora noticed Cassandra's stumbling, "I'll be right back."

"You should get changed, we're going out for dinner tonight. We're going to your favorite restaurant, Lucia's."

"Okay," she called out as she went into her room.

"Wow, Lucia's. I better get changed too." Aurora walked into the shared bedroom. Sitting on the bed was Cassandra. "You look sad," she questioned. Aurora went into her suitcase of clothes and grabbed a dress. "Is it about Sebastian?"

"Yeah...stupid, isn't it? I just got concert tickets to go to see my favorite artist, and I'm thinking of him."

"It's not stupid. You're grieving your heart right now Cassandra. You're allowed to do that. Now, come on. We're going to your favorite place."

~

Sebastian sat in his bed. The clock continues to pass by as he stared at his wall. In his hand, he held his gift that was meant for Cassandra and the other was his cellphone.

Sebastian clicked Cassandra's name that was saved on his phone. Her name still had the smiley face that he programmed so many months ago. Sebastian clicked the number and pressed the phone to his ear. He swallowed the spit that was forming in his mouth.

The phone rang twice before it went straight to voicemail. Sebastian clenched his phone and clicked her number again. It went to voicemail. He sucked in his breath and put on a pair of nearby shoes. His shirt followed, Sebastian picked up the bracelet with a collection of charms attached to it.

He jogged down the steps, he took precautions not to step on any creaks to wake up his sister or his parents. Sebastian eyed the keys that were in a small bowl next to the door. He took them out and opened his front door.

A small breeze brushed over his body as he closed the door. Sebastian got into his mother's car and drove to Cassandra's house. His heart was pumping, not because of the fact he stole his mother's car but because he was going to Cassandra's house.

~

Aurora and Cassandra sat in the bed. "So, I was talking to dad and I think after we move into the new house I'm going to transfer to your school next year."

"Really? But don't you like your school."

"No, not really. It's a technical school, and it's too many math and science classes for my liking. I much rather go to a regular school."

"Why did you even go to that school in the first place?"

"Because it's a good school. But now that we're moving and I know I don't like that school I can transfer."

"But, what about your friends?"

"They don't really matter, we were growing apart anyway. Besides, we only just started talking to one another and I like you more than I like them already."

Cassandra snorted, which made Aurora laugh, prompting Cassandra to let out her full unrestrained laugh. "God, do you think we have any more cake?"

"Want me to check? I can grab us a few pieces."

"Please," Cassandra urged.

~

Sebastian arrived at her house a little after eleven. He turned off his ignition and held onto the bracelet. Outside sat, two cars, one of which Sebastian didn't recognize. He eyed Cassandra's window and cut across the grass to go to it. He peered inside, sitting on the bed, with her hair down and an oversized t-shirt was Cassandra.

He balled his fist and knocked three times. Cassandra turned, her eyes widen when she saw Sebastian. "Open up," he said.

Cassandra balled her fist, she got up from the bed and slid her window open. "What the hell are you doing here?" She groaned to Sebastian.

"You didn't answer my phone call."

"Why would I? You broke up with me! When you break up with someone, that means you don't want to see them again."

"Cassandra," he trailed on. He looked at her face, her usual smile that would cover her face if this happened was replaced with a scowl. He held up a bracelet, with an assortment of charms.

Sebastian, last month went to the mall and brought Cassandra a present. He spent hours, searching for what Cassandra would like, his search ended when he arrived at a known jewelry store.

He eyed the different charms until his eyes landed on a hot dog. Then to a mic, then finally to a pencil.

All of these things meant something to them.

Their first kiss

Her first performance

Their first words

Cassandra knew instantly what each thing meant. "Fuck," she muttered to herself.

"I got you this, a while ago and I wanted you to have it for your birthday. I know we broke up and all but this is yours and..."

"Sebastian, what are you doing?" She out and said.

"I'm here to give you your gift."

"Sebastian...I mean really. Why are you here? You broke up with me and now you're here outside of my window with a goddamn bracelet filled with memories of us."

Sebastian looked up at Cassandra, he stared into her eyes. "I don't know."

"You don't know?" Cassandra pinched the bridge of her nose. "Sebastian, I want you to leave. I want you to leave and never come back."

Sebastian stood tall, and he never left his position. He swallowed his spit, and he knew in that instant why he was stood outside her window so late at night. "I know why."

"Why? Please tell me why you are here right now."

Sebastian stared Cassandra straight in the eye. He wanted her to see how serious he was when it came out.

"Because I love you Cassandra and I want us to get back together."

He never told a girl he loved her before. When the words came out of his mouth, he didn't regret it. He wanted her to know.

Cassandra's mouth fell open when he said it. It was all she wanted to hear from him.

Those three words.

Three words that would have made her break her promise of waiting.

Sebastian leaned into the window, his face was an inch away from hers. His eyes were hooded as he leaned closer towards her.

She stayed still as he leaned closer and closer until their lips touched. She found herself wanting him to kiss him.

Sebastian's lips were now pressed against hers. He placed his hand on her cheek and leaned more into the kiss. She missed the feeling of his large hand on her face. She grabbed his face and brought it closer.

"Sebastian," she groaned.

"I love you," he murmured into her lips.

As he opened his mouth and she did the same. A pit fell onto her stomach when she thought who else kissed those lips not two days ago. Cassandra pushes him away, her breath was heaving with the make-out session the two were having.

"Go home, Sebastian," she heaved. "Please... just go home."

Sebastian leaned into her window, "what?"

"Sebastian, I- I can't be with you. Sebastian, you say you love me but do you really? You wouldn't even respect my wishes on sex."

"Cas," he trailed on.

"Sebastian, I don't want to be with you anymore. This, what we have is over," she finished. Cassandra looked at the boy who was standing out of her window. "Goodbye." Cassandra closed the window in Sebastian's face blocking him from entering.

Sebastian stood still, sucked in his breath and a tear fell down his eyes as he watched Cassandra walk away. He turned on his heel and walked to the car. He rested his head on the steering wheel, with his heart now broken in two.
