9 years later.

It was only September and Kai could already see himself hating this school year. It was his last year of high school and he was extremely stressed. For the past two weeks he's been late about 10 times and he already failed a simple chemistry pop quiz.

Safe to say the year was not starting on a good note.

To make it all worse his best friend, Nicolas was accompanying his mother, Luciana on a business trip. He's been gone for almost two weeks now and that is also why Kai has been coming in late. Nicolas always picked up Kai in his fancy car but since he wasn't here Kai had to walk to school every morning which he hated doing because it meant waking up earlier.

However this morning Kai didn't walk to school.

Instead he ran.

"Late again?" Noelle laughed at him when he finally managed to make it to homeroom.

"Don't ask." Kai managed to say in between pants. "I slept through my alarm, then I fell asleep on the toilet and I almost broke my neck in the shower by slipping."

"Only you Kai. Only you." Noelle laughed quietly while the teaching started doing attendance.

"Where's Arthur?" Kai asked when they were free to talk till the bell rang again.

"How would I know?" Noelle muttered with an eye roll.

"Did you guys fight again?" Kai asked and the young girl next to him sighed tiredly.

"Maybe." She murmured.

"What happened?" He asked softly to one of his closest friends.

"He's been having a fling with this girl I hate since sophomore year and I asked him why he's "going out" with her he said it was because she's hot which pissed me off so I called him a fuckboy who thinks with nothing but his dick and he got all angry and left." She said and looked down at her white shoes with shame.

"You guys always fight over the girls he dates." Kai pointed out and Noelle shot him a glare.

"He doesn't date them! He leads them on and has fun with them before dumping them and moving on to the next one which is the exact definition of a fuckboy." She exclaimed rather loudly and a few people near them glanced at them.

"Shh!" Kai whispered. "You're being too loud."

"Whatever." Noelles muttered in annoyance and glanced at the beige wall in boredom.

Kai sighed and looked at his friend sadly.

Noelle was usually a very cheerful and happy person. She was very beautiful with dark brown hair that was naturally curly. She has a light caramel skin tone and her usual bright brown eyes were dimmed in sadness because of the boy she was hopelessly in love with; Arthur Wells.

She had been in love with Arthur since freshmen year. Both of them quickly became the best of friends and Arthur loved Noelle. But not the same way she loved him. Everyone but Arthur knew Noelle was in love with him. Kai thought he was quite stupid for not noticing the feelings of his very own best friend since it was quite obvious.

She always put his needs over hers. She always attended his games even when his girlfriend didn't. She always made posters for him and cheered at the top of her lungs for him. And if his team lost she'll treat him at his favourite restaurant to cheer him up, and if they won she'll throw a party at her house for him and his teammates to celebrate.

She hated parties but she knew he loved them so she threw one every single time he won.

The rest of homeroom was spent in silence between the two friends who were both lost in thought. When it was time to leave Kai gave Noelle a comforting hug and then left for math class while she went to her history class. He sat down at his usual seat and glanced at his phone waiting for a text to pop up. Just as he was about to put it back in his pocket in disappointment he received a text and his face immediately broke into a grin.

Nic: How's class without me?

Kai: Math is never the same without u. :(

Nic: Don't worry I'll be back by Saturday.

Kai: That's too lonnnnngggggg

Nic: I miss you too.

"Are you texting your girlfriend?" Kai heard someone giggle and he looked up to see Mary grinning at him from her seat.

"I don't have a girlfriend. I'm texting Nicolas." He said and Mary nodded and laughed.

"With the smile you had on your face I thought you were texting a secret lover or something." She teased and a blush started coating Kai's cheeks as he shook his head and turned back to his phone.

Kai: I have to go now I'll text you later. Be safe!

Nic: OK. I'll talk to you later.

Nicolas's mom usually doesn't bring him with her on her business trips especially when it's two weeks long. At first Nicolas wasn't affected by the news but when he realized he would be gone for two weeks he felt slightly upset that he wouldn't be able to see Kai for that long which was the longest they've went without seeing each other.

When Kai first heard the news he had been mad for about fifteen minutes before talking to Nic again. He made sure to tell him to text him every single day and send pictures of New York City.

They had spent the whole day together before Nicolas had to go home to catch an early flight the next day and Kai felt like crying which Nicolas had laughed at and told him he was going to be back before Kai could even realize he was gone. But Kai still felt the same since they spent almost every single day together since they were both nine years old and Kai had never went more then three days without seeing his best friend.

It's true that Kai does get a little emotional sometimes but only Nic and his family knew that fact. He remembered thinking people would bully him and call him a cry baby like his childhood bully did in elementary school if he cried in front of them so he always made sure to be extra cheery and happy in front of others and never show his over emotional side.

As math class dragged along all Kai could do was sulk at how bored he was without his desk buddy. He would always whisper things to Nicolas as the teacher talked and Nicolas would softly smile and nod along to whatever nonsense came out of Kai's mouth.

But now he had no one to whisper with and he was getting very annoyed.

"You guys will have to complete this math document before Wednesday next week. And if it's not done then there will be consequences." The teachers voice rang out through the class as she passed a five pages document filled with math problems and Kai groaned along with many other students.

"You can do it in teams if you wish." She added and many students started whooping and cheering.

"Do you want to work with me?" Mary asked Kai as she turned around and stared at him with a bright hopeful smile.

"Um..." Kai trailed off and glanced at the empty seat next to him.

"I'm sorry but I think I'll work with Nicolas when he comes back." He finally replied and Mary's eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

"Why?" She asked.

"What do you mean why?" Kai retorted.

"I mean you guys are always together anyways. And wouldn't you rather work with me?" She said and tucked a strand of her platinum blond hair behind her ear and looked at him with her bright blue eyes.

Kai suddenly felt uncomfortable as he stared at the pretty girl in front of him.

Was it weird that he always paired up with Nicolas and no one else but Nicolas?

"And we could have so much fun together too! Isn't it boring to always be with the same person all the time. I mean you even text him in class when he's not there. You're acting like you guys are dating or something and if you worked with someone other than him it would be a betrayal." She added and Kai slowly felt himself agree with her.

You're acting as if you guys are dating.

The words rang in his head and a weird feeling tugged at his chest that he shook off.

"I guess there's no harm in working with you..." Kai slowly caved in and Mary smirked in triumph as she pushed her chair closer to Kai's desk.

"Great!" She chirped. "Do you want to come over my place Saturday?" She asked.

"I can't Saturday." Kai shook his head.

"Why not?" Mary asked with a pout.

"Nic is coming back and I'm spending the day with him." Kai said with an exited smile and Mary scoffed.

"Again with Nic. Can't you spare a few hours for me?" She asked and this time Kai openly frowned at her to show his disapproval.

"No. I'm going to spend the whole day with him." He firmly said.

"But-"

"I said I can't Saturday!" Kai cut her off with aggravation in his tone. He was slowly regretting his decision to work with her.

"Geez okay" Mary rolled her eyes. "What about Sunday?"

"Fine"

I hope you guys enjoyed my first chapter. You got to see a little bit of Kai's personality and meet one of his closest friend other than Nic who is obviously Kai's favourite hehe. You'll meet Nic next chapter and see him as a teenager instead of the smoll adorable bean he was when he was younger. (╹ω╹ )
