Iris~~

"Erik." I grip my chest, stumbling back against the doorframe.

He lies there on my bed, his gaze on the ceiling. "How was your walk with the Preeminence?"

"How—how did you get in? I locked the door."

"I took one of the spare keys."

"That—"

He opens the palm of his hand resting by his head to reveal a bronze key. "Future Tresais, remember?"

"How's the hangover?"

He turns onto his side to look at me and rolls his eyes. "I was never hungover."

"But—"

"Perceptions, my dear."

I massage my temples. "What is that supposed to mean?"

"My cousins are angry I missed their ceremonies. And in doing that, I made the days of their ceremonies about myself rather than them. Making me look like a raging alcoholic is a jab."

"You looked hungover."

"That would be because yesterday at the wee hours of the morning you woke me up with your screams, and my cousin found us, and I spent the whole day driving and finding us suitable clothes for a dinner I didn't want to go to."

He asked me to drive, and I had to explain to him I couldn't. I would have given it a try if we weren't being followed by the Veil.

"Do I even mention the fact that you got wine spilled on the dress I bought you, and you then ended up wearing one my beloved cousin gave you?"

My hands ball into fists, and I bite down on my anger, trying to understand his point of view. "You didn't have to bring me."

Sitting up, he swings his legs over the edge of the bed. "How was your walk with my cousin?"

"It was good. Better than watching you and Colton face off over plates of eggs."

"Lunch will be less dramatic. I promise."

I rub my forehead. "I'm not going to be here for lunch."

His eyes widen. "What?"

"The Preeminence asked me to join him in town."

He crosses his arms, the fingers on one of his hands moving in and out of a fist. "He asked you on a date."

"No."

"It sounds like a date to me."

"You and I got dinner, and it wasn't a date."

"Yes, but we thought you were about to die."

I run my hands through my hair, connecting them behind my head. "Look, I'm going, and I'll be back. It will be fine."

"You need to stay away from him. If he finds out you're Expired—"

"I know."

"You don't know him though. He's a skilled manipulator. He will talk anyone into anything he wants of them. He's the same as everyone else here: pretty on the outside, rotten on the inside."

"I survived my Expiration Date. I think I can handle him." What would he say if I told him Jonas already knows?

"You survived only because of me."

I wince. I don't want to argue with him. I don't know if we're friends, but he's at the very least the only one I think I can trust. Not completely but enough to get by. "Why are you in here anyway?"

"I talked to Jonas last night. He said if I want to travel off the Estate, I need a chaperone. You and I are going to dinner."

So I think if you vote or comment, Erik or Iris will love you. Colton would just tell you to stop reading about his private life.
