On some weekends when mom came to visit, we would have a girl's day out. It's been a tradition of ours since dad was first promoted as head detective.

We would go to the mall or the movies, or we'd get manicures, or go out for frozen yogurt. Just some nice and relaxed girl time.

"So how is your new school? No more vague 'It's going good' responses I want details."

"Well," I started, thinking about the events that happened within the few weeks, "I haven't received one detention yet, most of my teachers seem completely adequate, Cyrus made the soccer team, I'm taking pictures for the school paper, I made an actual friend that's a girl, annnnd I'm tutoring a star soccer player."

She blinked at me, absorbing all the information I just laid on her. Then after a moment's time, she said, "Is he cute?"

"No other comments?" I asked in slight disbelief, "No other questions about anything I just said?"

"Fine, tell me about your new friend. Your father filled me in on Cyrus making the team and that you take pictures now. Which I am very proud of you for by the way."

"Her name is Natalie, we met at soccer tryouts. She's dating a boy on the team," I whispered the next part, "which personally I feel like she can do better, but that's none of my business."

"Hm," Mom hummed, "Maybe you can bring her with us next time. I would love to meet her."

I nodded my head in agreement, taking another scoopful of my frozen yogurt. Mom wasn't eating her yogurt, just staring at me.

"So, is he cute?" She asked again. I knew I shouldn't have mentioned Declan. That was 100% my mistake. Now, I would probably never hear the end of it.

I sighed deeply before shrugging my shoulders and said, "He's visually appealing, so what?"

Don't judge for my choice of words, I wasn't about to tell my mother that I did in fact find him insanely attractive and that he could most certainly leggo my eggo.

Don't ask me about those choice of words either, I have no explanation, nor do I have control over my thoughts.

"So, you like him?"

"I never said that. If anything, we're friends. I just teach him math sometimes after school."

"Does Cyrus know him? Does he approve?" she asked, whipping out her cell phone.

"Mom do not text Cyrus right now. It's really not a big deal and I promise if anything happens between me and a boy, I will let you know."

It was true.

Well, sort of true.

Okay, maybe not entirely true.

I never told her about the last guy I liked. Mostly, because I didn't want her telling dad about it and have him all like, "What's his name? Where does he live? Who's his dad? Does he have a criminal record? Probably not, but I can forge one. He knows I have a gun, right? It's okay, he's going to learn."

He first gave me this speech when I was nine.

My dad and Cyrus's dad used to go to the soccer fields on weekends to play for fun with their mutual friends. Cyrus and I always tagged along so that we could play on the playground together.

Then one day, Cyrus couldn't come to the park because he was sick. Somehow, I found myself holding hands with some random boy. I don't know why he was holding my hand either. He just grabbed it as we were talking and told me he didn't want to let it go.

I never saw that kid again. Now that I think of it, I'm concerned. Because that was the day dad told me, "What's his name? Where does he live? Who's his dad? Does he have a criminal record? Probably not, but I can forge one. He knows I have a gun, right? It's okay, he's going to learn."

To which I responded, "Dad, I'm nine."

So, I knew from then on, don't tell my parents about a boy unless I'm serious about him.

"I'm still texting Cyrus," Mom said, and tapped away on her phone as I sighed and ate the rest of my yogurt.

------------------------------------------

Our second tutoring session happened later in the week. This time, we met at a café instead of either of our houses.

I had arrived there first, setting my stuff down and started on my own work as I waited for Declan.

When someone pulled out a chair from my table, I had expected to see him sitting down beside me. Only, it wasn't Declan, it was some guy who looked older, maybe mid-twenties. He had long blonde hair that went just past his ears and he smiled at me.

"Is someone sitting here?"

"Actually yes, I'm waiting for someone."

"Oh," He said with interest, "it's not a boyfriend is it? Or maybe this friend that's joining us is as pretty as you, huh?"

"Us?" I asked, scooting his coffee cup farther from my area. "There is no us. As you can see I'm busy here, and as I said before, I'm waiting for someone."

I went back to my work, focusing my attention on that instead of the man still in front of me. Maybe if I stick headphones in, he'll catch a hint.

"I'm Dave by the way."

"That's nice Dave," I said while finally finding a pair of headphones and sticking them in both my ears.

Unfortunately, these were my pair that was broken and could only play songs at a low volume. I could still hear Dave as he tried to talk some more. "You know, this is usually the part where you tell me your name, sweet cheeks."

I pretended I couldn't hear him now, only the fucker started waving in my face. I glared up at him and he continued. "I'm Dave, and you are?"

"Declan, nice to you meet you." A new hand was shot out in front of the both of us as Declan finally arrived. I made a mental note that this was the last time I show up at a place early again.

Dave took his hand hesitantly and gave it a firm shake.

"Oh," he said, his tone subtly annoyed, "and who are you to her?"

"My boyfriend," I said at the same time Declan said, "her fiancé."

Fiancé???

I think Dave noticed the widening of my eyes, so I quickly fixed my face and put on a smile instead.

"It's still so new, I can hardly believe it," I saved as Declan sat down beside me.

Dave looked unconvinced. "Well if you're engaged, where's your ring?"

"Getting resized. The damn thing would just slip right off my finger," I replied quickly before Declan could give another ridiculous answer. I looked at him then and noticed he was hiding a smile.

"I don't believe that," Dave said. "You look too young to be engaged."

"So then you admit that you're knowingly hitting on a minor?" Declan asked, throwing his arm over my shoulder as he leaned back in his seat.

I raised my brows and looked to Dave, waiting for his response, "I didn't- I never-"He stuttered.

"Dave, you know, I also should have mentioned that my dad's a cop and I could have you arrested quicker than you can say sweet cheeks."

He finally stopped stuttering and his face went slack as he stared at me. I threw in a wink for dramatic measure.

Declan whistled from the side, drawing Dave's attention. He silently pointed to the door with his hand and we watched as Dave finally left the shop.

"Fiancé?" I asked, still thrown off that that was his go-to.

"Listen, it was either that, or I labeled you as a meth head who escaped rehab. Those were the first two things that popped in my head and I figured fiancé was more... respectful."

I opened my mouth to argue, but I honestly had nothing to say.

"Why is it that when I leave you on your own, creepy guys hit on you? You're like a chick magnet, but the opposite," he said.

"A rooster repellent?"

He let out an exhaled laughter. "Not exactly what I meant, but we'll make it work."

He went quiet as he took out his work that we would be going over today. When he had his things set out on the table, I noticed he was hiding a smile again.

"What?" I asked.

"Nothin," He said with a casual shrug. "Just noticed that your first instinct was to call me your boyfriend."

I rolled my eyes and said, "We're on page thirty-two. You can look over what we did last time and I want you to practice the first two problems on your own. I can help you with the rest."

Declan let out a small laugh at the way I dismissed his observation and turned to the right page.

Then, he paused to look at the dangling headphone that I wasn't using, reached out to grab it, and stuffed it in his ear before getting to work.
